🌨 Snowstorms in Summerlin: A Rare but Real Phenomenon
While Las Vegas is known for its blistering heat, the western edge of the valley, particularly Summerlin, experiences occasional snowstorms thanks to its higher elevation. This master-planned community sits up to 3,500 feet higher than other parts of the valley, creating unique weather conditions.
Why Summerlin Gets Snow
According to National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Gorelow, Summerlin’s elevation makes it 5 to 7 degrees cooler on average than the rest of Las Vegas. While this is most noticeable during the city’s scorching summers, it also increases the likelihood of snow during winter storms.
Notable snow events in Summerlin include:
January 2021: Up to 3 inches of snow.
February 2019: A significant storm brought 8.5 inches of snow.
Though the snow rarely lasts more than a day, Gorelow predicts that westward expansion into higher elevations could lead to more reports of snow in the coming years.
Cooler Temperatures Attract Homeowners
Summerlin’s cooler climate is a major selling point for prospective residents. Danielle Bisterfeldt, senior vice president of marketing and consumer experience for Summerlin, highlighted the appeal:
“Higher elevation, which typically delivers more precipitation, also supports a wider variety of naturally occurring vegetation in the beautiful desert areas near Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.”
A Different Desert Experience
For residents seeking a break from Las Vegas’ extreme heat, Summerlin offers a distinct microclimate. With cooler temperatures, occasional snow, and proximity to Red Rock Canyon, it provides a unique blend of urban convenience and natural beauty.
While snowstorms remain rare, the phenomenon adds another layer of charm to this sought-after community.
🏈 Raiders’ Playoff Hopes End Amidst Disappointing Season
The Las Vegas Raiders’ slim hopes of a playoff berth were officially dashed following Sunday’s NFL games, marking the team’s 20th playoff absence in 22 seasons. Their latest stumble came in a Black Friday loss to the Kansas City Chiefs, where costly errors in the final minute sealed their fate and underscored a season riddled with missed opportunities.
A Season of High Hopes and Harsh Realities
At the start of the season, the Raiders believed they could secure a winning record and contend for a wild-card spot. However, a series of setbacks derailed their plans:
Quarterback Struggles: Veteran Gardner Minshew, expected to stabilize the offense, was plagued by turnovers and a season-ending collarbone injury. His replacement, Aidan O’Connell, struggled with consistency and missed several games due to a thumb injury.
Defensive Decline: Injuries to key players like Christian Wilkins and Malcolm Koonce derailed a defense that ranked in the top 10 last year. This season, the Raiders are allowing the fifth-most points in the league.
Run Game Collapse: Running back Zamir White failed to lead an effective ground attack, leaving the Raiders’ rushing offense at the bottom of the NFL rankings.
Coach Antonio Pierce, in his first full season, faced growing pains as a game manager despite support from veteran coaches Marvin Lewis and Joe Philbin. Friday’s loss to the Chiefs highlighted the team’s lack of preparedness in critical moments, casting doubt on Pierce’s future with the team.
Offensive Struggles Persist
The Raiders’ offense, now led by interim coordinator Scott Turner, has shown little improvement. The team ranks 27th in the NFL in scoring, averaging just 18.7 points per game. Despite some bright spots under Turner, the Raiders managed only 19 and 17 points in his two games in charge.
One consistent highlight has been rookie tight end Brock Bowers, who is making a strong case for Offensive Rookie of the Year. Bowers leads the NFL in receptions with 84 and is fourth in receiving yards with 884. His 140-yard performance against the Chiefs showcased his immense potential.
“He’s pretty special, obviously,” quarterback Aidan O’Connell said of Bowers.
What’s Next for the Raiders?
With five games remaining, the team is looking to salvage pride and build momentum for the future:
Player Development: A young offensive line has shown signs of growth, offering hope for more stability in the seasons ahead.
Defensive Auditions: Several players in contract years are fighting to prove their worth, while rookies like Decamerion Richardson aim to solidify roles in the secondary.
Quarterback Search: Upgrading at quarterback will likely be a priority in the offseason as the team seeks a long-term solution to its offensive woes.
A Season of Lessons
Despite their record, the Raiders have remained competitive in spurts, including Friday’s narrow loss to the Chiefs. Coach Pierce praised his team’s effort and resilience, saying:
“Love the effort, dedication, and fight that they showed this week.”
While the playoffs are out of reach, the Raiders hope to use the remaining games to lay a foundation for success in 2025 and beyond.

🏢 Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger Ousted Amid Investor Frustrations and Company Challenges
Intel announced the resignation of CEO Pat Gelsinger on Monday, capping nearly four turbulent years at the helm of what was once America’s semiconductor leader. The decision, following a contentious board meeting, underscores mounting concerns over Intel’s competitive standing and financial struggles.
Leadership Transition
Gelsinger’s exit comes amid Intel’s declining market share, a lagging stock price, and failure to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom, where rivals like Nvidia have soared. CFO David Zinsner and Intel Products CEO MJ Holthaus were named interim co-CEOs, while longtime board member Frank Yeary will serve as interim executive chair.
“We are working to create a leaner, simpler, more agile Intel,” Yeary said, signaling a shift in strategy.
Shares of Intel fell 2% following the announcement, adding to the 52% year-to-date decline.
Gelsinger’s Ambitious but Troubled Tenure
Returning to Intel in 2021, Gelsinger unveiled an aggressive turnaround plan:
Chipmaking Parity Goals: Sought to compete with leading manufacturers Samsung and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co.
U.S. Manufacturing Expansion: Invested heavily in domestic chip fabs in Arizona and Ohio, partly funded by a $7.86 billion grant from the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act.
Government Partnerships: Secured a multibillion-dollar contract with the Department of Defense and positioned Intel as critical to national security.
Despite these efforts, investors grew wary of Intel’s high spending, declining free cash flow, and increased debt. Major setbacks during Gelsinger’s tenure included:
AI Leadership Miss: Nvidia’s dominance in the AI sector left Intel struggling to catch up.
Market Value Decline: Intel’s market cap has fallen below $100 billion, a fraction of its peak valuation.
Disappointing Financials: In August, Intel reported its sharpest quarterly sell-off in 50 years, leading to plans for a $10 billion cost-cutting initiative, including laying off over 15% of its workforce.
Governance Concerns and Strategic Uncertainty
Gelsinger’s departure raises questions about Intel’s board oversight and corporate strategy. Reports of boardroom dysfunction, failed acquisitions, and lack of semiconductor expertise among directors have fueled criticism. Intel’s September decision to spin off its foundry business as a separate subsidiary could enable external funding but highlights ongoing structural challenges.
Speculation about potential acquisitions, including overtures from Qualcomm, has added to investor uncertainty about Intel’s future direction.
What Lies Ahead
Intel’s next CEO will inherit a company at a critical juncture, grappling with:
Increased competition from industry leaders like Nvidia, AMD, and TSMC.
A diminished market position in emerging technologies like artificial intelligence.
Strained investor confidence amidst sharp stock declines and financial setbacks.
While many challenges precede Gelsinger’s tenure—such as decisions not to produce chips for Apple or acquire Nvidia—his ouster reflects the urgency for a strategic reset to restore Intel’s competitive edge and rebuild its reputation as a semiconductor powerhouse.
🎰 Resorts World Las Vegas Reports Decline in Q3 Revenue
Resorts World Las Vegas experienced its weakest financial quarter in two years, citing challenges from an unusually hot summer and election-related economic uncertainty. The resort, owned by Malaysia-based Genting Berhad, reported $177 million in revenue for the third quarter of 2024—a 23% decline compared to the same period in 2023.
Key Financial Metrics
Revenue: $177 million, down from the previous year’s third-quarter earnings.
Hotel Occupancy: Fell to 85.1% from an average of 90.4% in 2023.
Average Daily Room Rate: Decreased to $244 during the summer months, though it averaged $267 for the year so far, up from $256 in the same period last year.
The decline reflects the impact of extreme summer heat and economic uncertainty during an election year, according to the company.
Challenges and Recovery Plans
The third quarter was marked by lower occupancy rates and reduced consumer spending, which the company attributed to:
Abnormally High Temperatures: Likely deterring tourists from visiting during the peak summer months.
Economic Anxiety: Concerns surrounding the 2024 election influenced consumer behavior.
To address these challenges and boost future performance, Genting Berhad outlined growth initiatives, including:
Expanded Offerings: New dining, entertainment, and retail options to attract visitors.
Theatre Performances: Enhancements at Resorts World Theatre aimed at driving foot traffic.
Marketing Database Growth: Targeting high-net-worth customers and leveraging established convention groups to increase revenue.
Future Outlook
Despite a challenging quarter, the company remains optimistic about the remainder of 2024, with planned projects expected to increase visitation and profitability. Resorts World Las Vegas aims to strengthen its position on the Strip by appealing to both leisure and business travelers with high-margin offerings and a robust marketing strategy.
❎ Harris Campaign Faces Criticism Over Post-Election Fundraising and Record Spending
Vice President Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign continues to solicit donations weeks after a significant loss in the election, raising eyebrows and sparking criticism within the Democratic Party.
Post-Election Fundraising Efforts
Emails sent from the Harris campaign ask supporters to contribute to the "Harris Fight Fund," emphasizing the need to counter President-elect Donald Trump’s actions. One email read:
“We know the election didn’t turn out as we’d hoped, but we’re not backing down.”
These requests have been met with backlash from party members and donors, particularly as the campaign ended $20 million in debt after spending a record-breaking $1.5 billion in just 15 weeks.
Democratic Strategists React
The continued fundraising has left many Democrats frustrated.
Jon Reinish, a Democratic strategist, called the requests “especially galling” and “insulting,” noting the poor optics of asking for more money after such a resounding defeat.
James Carville, a prominent party insider, urged a full audit of the Harris campaign and related Democratic organizations to uncover how billions of dollars were spent.
Carville highlighted the staggering financial scale, citing the Harris campaign’s $1.5 billion expenditures alongside $900 million raised by the super PAC Future Forward.
Implications for the Democratic Party
The fallout from Harris’ loss and the fundraising controversy comes as Democrats prepare for the election of a new Democratic National Committee (DNC) chair in February. Leading candidates include:
Ken Martin, chair of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party.
Martin O’Malley, former Maryland governor and past presidential candidate.
Challenges Ahead
Harris’ fundraising struggles highlight broader issues within the Democratic Party, including donor fatigue and concerns about financial mismanagement. As party leaders seek to rebuild after the election, they face the challenge of restoring trust among supporters and crafting a strategy for future campaigns.
📈 Global Stock Markets Gain as Tech Stocks Propel Wall Street to Another Record
Asian markets mostly rose Tuesday, following a record-setting session on Wall Street driven by gains in technology stocks. While the S&P 500 hit a new all-time high for the 54th time this year, the Dow Jones Industrial Average dipped, and the Nasdaq composite climbed significantly.
Key Highlights from Wall Street
S&P 500: Up 0.2% to 6,047.15, achieving another record close.
Nasdaq Composite: Jumped 1% to 19,403.95, supported by strong tech gains.
Dow Jones: Fell 0.3%, dropping 128 points to 44,782.00.
Big Tech stocks drove much of the momentum, with notable performances from:
Microsoft: Rose 1.8%.
Meta Platforms: Climbed 3.2%.
Super Micro Computer: Surged 28.7% after addressing allegations of misconduct and clearing its management and board.
However, Intel fell 0.5% after announcing the retirement of CEO Pat Gelsinger, and automaker Stellantis dropped 6.3% following the resignation of its CEO Carlos Tavares amidst sales challenges.
Asian Markets Ride the Wave
Japan’s Nikkei 225: Up 1.8% to 39,215.99, boosted by Tokyo Electron’s 4.4% surge.
South Korea’s Kospi: Rose 1.7% to 2,495.80 after inflation data hinted at potential rate cuts in 2025.
Australia’s S&P/ASX 200: Gained 0.7% to 8,504.00.
Hong Kong’s Hang Seng: Added 0.2% to 19,595.53.
Shanghai Composite: Up 0.2% to 3,370.74.
Analysts noted that Japan might benefit from Donald Trump’s renewed tariff threats on China and other developing economies, which could impact currency and trade flows.
Market Movers and Energy Updates
Bonds: Treasury yields held steady, with the 10-year yield at 4.19%.
Crude Oil: U.S. benchmark crude fell 9 cents to $68.01 per barrel, while Brent crude dropped 3 cents to $71.80.
Currencies: The U.S. dollar strengthened against the yen, rising to 149.91, and edged slightly higher against the euro.
Economic Outlook
Investors are closely watching upcoming U.S. job market reports, including the October job openings data and the November employment report. Economists anticipate November will show accelerated hiring after a slower October impacted by hurricanes and labor strikes.
Mark Hackett, Chief of Investment Research at Nationwide, described the current economic environment as a “Goldilocks zone,” where growth is strong enough to support earnings but weak enough to justify potential Federal Reserve rate cuts.
Conclusion
While tech stocks continue to push Wall Street to new highs, uncertainties around global trade and economic policies remain. This week’s job data and Federal Reserve signals will likely shape the next phase of market movements.
