❎ Shelley Berkley Takes Office as Las Vegas Mayor, Marking New Leadership Era
Shelley Berkley officially assumed her role as mayor of Las Vegas on Wednesday, succeeding Carolyn Goodman. The transition ceremony at City Hall was marked by music, confetti, and a packed audience, as Berkley and newly elected Councilwoman Shondra Summers-Armstrong took their oaths of office.
The event ended a 25-year period of leadership by the Goodman family, with Carolyn Goodman serving 12 years as mayor after her husband, Oscar Goodman, held the position for the same duration. Berkley, a former U.S. congresswoman, won the November runoff election to replace Carolyn Goodman, defeating Victoria Seaman, who remains on the City Council.
Berkley begins her first four-year term with plans to prioritize growth and prosperity for the nearly 650,000 residents of Las Vegas. Her leadership will focus on enhancing the city’s reputation not only as a world-class tourist destination but also as an ideal place to live and raise families.
The new administration faces significant challenges, including addressing a critical shortage of affordable housing, managing rising homelessness, and resolving ongoing legal disputes with a developer over the defunct Badlands golf course.
Shondra Summers-Armstrong, who previously served in the Nevada Assembly, joined the City Council to represent Ward 5, which includes the Historic Westside. She replaces Cedric Crear, who opted not to seek re-election in his unsuccessful bid for mayor. Summers-Armstrong aims to focus on redevelopment, job creation, and community advancement in her ward.
Berkley and Summers-Armstrong join a City Council that includes Mayor Pro Tem Brian Knudsen and Councilmembers Victoria Seaman, Olivia Diaz, Nancy Brune, and Francis Allen-Palenske. Together, they will work on the city’s challenges while continuing to guide its growth and development.
Berkley has indicated she will reassess her energy and health at the end of her first term before deciding whether to seek re-election, with a maximum of eight years in office planned. Meanwhile, Summers-Armstrong begins her term with a focus on delivering progress for her constituents and supporting the city’s broader goals.
🏒 Golden Knights Gear Up for Playoff Rematch Against Dallas Stars
The Vegas Golden Knights are set to face the Dallas Stars on Friday at T-Mobile Arena in a highly anticipated rematch of last season’s Western Conference first-round playoff series. The meeting brings added energy and intensity as the Knights aim to avenge their Game 7 loss, while the Stars look to prove their victory was no fluke.
Playoff Memories Linger
The Stars eliminated the Knights in a closely contested seven-game series last season, rallying from a 2-0 deficit to win four of the next five games. The cumulative score was tied at 16-16 across the series, underscoring how evenly matched the teams were.
The Knights, who were the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference last year, left the series believing they had the tools to advance further. This season, they are proving their resilience, sitting atop the Pacific Division standings.
Recent Momentum for the Knights
Vegas enters Friday’s game riding a two-game win streak following a defensive masterclass:
Tuesday: A 1-0 shutout victory over the Edmonton Oilers, anchored by goaltender Adin Hill’s 28 saves.
Wednesday: A 4-1 road win against the Anaheim Ducks, with Alexander Holtz and Shea Theodore providing crucial third-period goals.
The Knights have tightened up defensively, allowing one goal or fewer in consecutive games for the first time this season.
“I think we’ve been playing really good winning hockey,” said Holtz. “It’s going to be nice to get back and play at the Fortress again.”
Challenges and Fatigue
Friday’s matchup will mark the Knights’ 10th game in 17 days, following a grueling schedule that included a five-game road trip and two sets of back-to-back games in less than a week. Despite this, coach Bruce Cassidy praised his team’s defensive improvement, particularly after a 6-0 loss to Utah last Saturday.
“It’s something we wanted to focus on coming out of training camp,” Cassidy said. “I don’t think we’ve hit that level defensively yet, but I think (Wednesday) was one of our better ones.”
The game will also be the Knights’ last before a well-deserved five-day break, providing time for rest and recovery.
Stone’s Status Remains Unclear
Knights captain Mark Stone, who has 21 points in 13 games, participated in a noncontact practice earlier this week. While this marks progress, it remains uncertain whether he will return to the lineup for Friday’s game or wait until after the team’s break.
“I’m excited to get back with my teammates this week,” Stone said Thursday. “But we’ll see how my pregame skate goes tomorrow and make sure I’m dialed in before I make that decision.”
Dallas Seeks Redemption After Loss to Kings
The Stars (16-9-0) come into Friday’s game after a disappointing 3-2 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Dallas had a 2-0 lead in the first period but faltered, allowing three unanswered goals on just 17 shots against goaltender Jake Oettinger.
The Stars will be motivated to bounce back, particularly given the stakes of facing a team they bested in last year’s playoffs.
What to Watch For
Vegas’ Defensive Form: The Knights have shown their ability to shut down offensive threats, as seen in their recent performances against Connor McDavid and the Ducks’ scoring threats.
Stars’ Quick Response: Dallas will likely bring intensity early, as they seek to regain momentum after their loss to Los Angeles.
Stone’s Potential Return: If Mark Stone is cleared to play, his presence could give the Knights an emotional and strategic edge.
“We’re looking forward to proving ourselves,” Cassidy said. “This game is a good test to see where we stand.”

🎰 Players Sue Over Alleged Rigging of "Wheel of Fortune" Slot Machine Bonus Wheel
Four slot-machine players, including a Las Vegas resident, have filed a class-action lawsuit against International Game Technology (IGT) and five major casino operators, alleging that the bonus wheel on the popular Wheel of Fortune slot machine is rigged. The lawsuit claims millions of players nationwide are being deceived, as the game’s bonus wheel does not operate as a true random chance mechanism despite its appearance.
Allegations of Deception
The lawsuit contends that the bonus wheel’s design is misleading. Although its segments appear equally sized, giving the impression of equal odds for all outcomes, the results are controlled by a computer program rather than physical randomness.
“Before the advent of electronic gaming devices, mechanical spinning wheels were naturally subject to the laws of physics, offering equal odds for all segments,” the lawsuit states. “However, the Wheel of Fortune bonus wheel is pre-determined by a computer chip containing a random number generator, meaning higher-value prizes are far less likely to be won.”
Defendants and Plaintiffs
The lawsuit, filed November 21 in U.S. District Court in Nevada, names:
Defendant: IGT, a leading slot machine manufacturer headquartered in London with significant operations in Las Vegas and Reno.
Casino Operators: MGM Resorts International, Bally’s Corp., Penn Entertainment Inc., Station Casinos LLC, and Boyd Gaming Corp.
The plaintiffs include:
Jessica Naumann of Las Vegas
Charlotte Bownes of Detroit
Joseph Lagreca of East Providence, Rhode Island
Christopher Goodin of Louisville, Mississippi
Claims and Legal Grounds
The lawsuit alleges violations of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO), common-law fraud, unjust enrichment, and negligent misrepresentation. It seeks:
Unspecified compensatory and punitive damages
Special, consequential, and incidental damages
Attorneys' fees
An injunction to stop IGT from promoting or operating the game
Class-Action Status
The plaintiffs aim to establish a nationwide class action, potentially including millions of players.
Where the Games Were Played
The lawsuit outlines instances where the plaintiffs played the Wheel of Fortune slot machine and lost money, though no specific amounts were disclosed:
Naumann: Played at Palace Station and The Orleans in Las Vegas (January 2021).
Bownes: Played at MGM Grand Detroit (November 2021).
Lagreca: Played at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort in Rhode Island (August 2022) and MGM Springfield in Massachusetts (October 2022).
Goodin: Played at Penn’s Ameristar Vicksburg and Bally’s Vicksburg Casino in Mississippi (March-May 2024).
Core Complaint
The plaintiffs argue that the game’s appearance and operation lead players to believe they have an equal chance of landing on any segment, including the highest-value prizes. However, the computer program controlling the wheel allegedly ensures that lower-value prizes occur much more frequently.
“Stated simply, the wheel device is rigged by an internal computer to stop much more frequently on the segments with lower monetary amounts than the segments with higher monetary amounts,” the lawsuit asserts.
Court Proceedings
The case has been assigned to U.S. District Judge Anne Traum and Magistrate Judge Craig Denney. The plaintiffs are seeking a jury trial.
Response from Defendants
IGT and the named casino operators, including MGM, Boyd Gaming, and Bally’s, have declined to comment, citing policies against discussing pending litigation.
Potential Impact
If successful, the lawsuit could have wide-ranging implications for the gaming industry, particularly for how slot machines are designed, marketed, and regulated.
❎ Biden Considers Preemptive Pardons for Allies Ahead of Trump’s Term
President Joe Biden is considering issuing sweeping preemptive pardons for current and former officials who could be targeted by President-elect Donald Trump’s administration. The unprecedented move aims to shield individuals from potentially costly investigations but comes with significant legal and political risks.
A Novel Use of Presidential Power
Traditionally, pardons are granted to individuals who have been convicted of crimes, or at least formally charged. Biden’s deliberations involve issuing pardons to those who have not been investigated, let alone prosecuted. The motivation stems from fears that Trump and his allies may launch politically motivated investigations, exacting reputational and financial damage regardless of legal outcomes.
“The president’s pardon power is absolute,” said one legal expert, “but using it this broadly would mark a significant expansion of its traditional application.”
Possible Recipients
Among those who could receive pardons are:
Dr. Anthony Fauci: The former infectious disease expert who became a target of conservative ire during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Witnesses in Trump’s criminal or civil trials: Individuals who testified in cases against Trump or his associates.
Biden administration officials: Those who have faced public criticism or threats from Trump and his allies.
Model for Preemptive Pardons
Biden’s decision to pardon his son, Hunter Biden, earlier this year could serve as a template. Hunter was pardoned not only for his convictions on gun and tax violations but also for any potential federal crimes committed over an 11-year period.
This comprehensive approach seeks to neutralize potential legal threats that Trump’s allies might pursue, similar to the strategies Trump’s team reportedly considered for his supporters following the January 6 Capitol riot.
Historical Precedents
Preemptive pardons are rare but not without precedent:
In 1974, President Gerald Ford issued a sweeping pardon to Richard Nixon, shielding him from prosecution related to the Watergate scandal. Ford justified the pardon as a way to avoid prolonged national division.
Risks and Criticism
Biden’s aides are divided over the strategy. Some worry it could:
Encourage similar actions by Trump: Critics fear that if Biden sets this precedent, Trump could issue blanket pardons for his allies, enabling potential abuses of power.
Feed perceptions of guilt: Pardoning individuals not under investigation could bolster claims by Trump’s allies that those individuals engaged in wrongdoing.
Others argue that the move could help Trump focus on governing rather than pursuing retribution against political adversaries.
Political Climate Under Trump
Trump has openly discussed retribution against those he views as enemies, including President Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris, and former Vice President Mike Pence. He has also promoted extreme measures, such as military tribunals, for perceived acts of treason.
Trump’s nominee for FBI director, Kash Patel, has publicly listed dozens of former officials he intends to “come after” once in office.
Expert Opinions
Richard Painter, a former White House ethics lawyer under President George W. Bush, reluctantly supports Biden’s consideration of preemptive pardons.
“It’s not an ideal situation,” Painter said. “But given the threats, it may be the best option to protect individuals from politically motivated prosecutions.”
Painter also expressed concern that Trump could use blanket pardons to shield allies from accountability, regardless of Biden’s actions.
Conventional Pardons Still Expected
In addition to preemptive pardons, Biden is expected to issue more traditional pardons addressing sentencing disparities and other federal convictions by the end of the year, the White House confirmed.
As deliberations continue, the final decision on whether Biden will issue sweeping pardons remains uncertain.
📈 Ferguson Predicts 25-Basis-Point Cut Before Fed Adopts Cautious Stance
Roger Ferguson, former Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve, shared his insights on the central bank’s likely trajectory during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box. Ferguson suggested that the Fed will likely implement a 25-basis-point rate cut in December before adopting a more cautious “wait-and-see” approach to assess the broader economic landscape.
Key Factors Behind the Prediction
Ferguson’s comments were influenced by the November jobs report, which showed a labor market that, while softening, remains resilient enough to support a measured approach to monetary policy adjustments.
November Jobs Report: The U.S. economy added fewer jobs than expected, indicating a gradual cooling in the labor market. However, wage growth and low unemployment levels still present challenges to the Fed’s goal of bringing inflation back to its 2% target.
Inflation Fight: Ferguson emphasized that the Fed’s decision-making remains tied to its mandate of price stability. While inflation has moderated in recent months, core inflation metrics remain slightly above the Fed’s comfort zone.
“The Fed is likely to take this 25-basis-point cut as a signal of its willingness to support economic growth while continuing to keep inflation expectations anchored,” Ferguson explained.
Rate Path Outlook
After a probable December rate cut, Ferguson expects the Fed to pause further adjustments, entering a "wait-and-see" phase to monitor the cumulative impact of previous rate hikes and cuts.
Policy Lag: Monetary policy changes take time to filter through the economy, and Ferguson suggested the Fed will be cautious about overreacting to short-term data.
Global Risks: He highlighted external factors such as geopolitical tensions and global economic slowdowns, which could influence the Fed’s next steps.
Market Reactions: Financial markets have already begun pricing in a 74% likelihood of a December rate cut, signaling broad alignment with Ferguson’s expectations.
The Fed’s Balancing Act
Ferguson noted that the Fed’s challenge is to balance its dual mandate of promoting maximum employment and stable prices without triggering economic instability. A 25-basis-point cut would represent a continuation of the Fed’s recent trend of easing, which began in response to slowing growth and improved inflation data.
“It’s a delicate balance,” Ferguson said. “The Fed must ensure that it doesn’t loosen too quickly and reignite inflation, while also avoiding tightening excessively and pushing the economy into a deeper slowdown.”
Broader Economic Context
The former vice chairman’s remarks come as markets and policymakers alike grapple with mixed economic signals:
Consumer Spending: Remains robust despite higher interest rates.
Corporate Earnings: Show signs of pressure as borrowing costs weigh on business investment.
Housing Market: Continues to struggle under the weight of elevated mortgage rates, a sector Ferguson highlighted as a key area of economic vulnerability.
