🎅 Las Vegas Boulevard Transforms for 20th Annual Great Santa Run

On Saturday, nearly 5,000 runners in red coats and white beards transformed Las Vegas Boulevard into a sea of festive cheer for the 20th annual Great Santa Run. Hosted by Opportunity Village, a Southern Nevada nonprofit serving individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, the event offered participants a choice between a 5K run and a one-mile course.

Supporting Opportunity Village

The Great Santa Run is a key fundraiser for Opportunity Village, with registration fees ranging from $25 to $55. These funds support the nonprofit’s mission to provide workforce training and direct employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The organization’s programs place clients in various jobs, including detailing cars, assembling orientation kits, and office roles.

Opportunity Village surpassed its initial fundraising goal of $10,000 a few days before the event, collecting over $15,000 by Thursday.

Festive Costumes and Holiday Spirit

Participants received a five-piece Santa suit—complete with a red coat, pants, hat, beard, and drawstring bag—as part of their registration. While many dressed as Santa, others brought unique holiday-themed costumes, including reindeer and the Grinch.

The event attracted locals and visitors alike, with participants traveling from across the country to take part or cheer on the runners.

Community Celebration

The run concluded near the intersection of Bridger Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, where enthusiastic supporters cheered participants as they completed the course.

The event not only raised funds but also amplified awareness of Opportunity Village’s vital work in Southern Nevada, bringing together the community in the spirit of giving and holiday cheer.

🏈 UNLV’s Barry Odom in Talks to Become Purdue’s Next Head Football Coach

UNLV head football coach Barry Odom is reportedly in discussions to become the next head coach at Purdue University, according to multiple reports. While no official deal has been confirmed, sources close to the situation indicate that talks are ongoing. Yahoo Sports was the first to break the news of Odom’s potential move.

Odom’s Success at UNLV

Barry Odom has led a dramatic turnaround at UNLV, delivering the program’s most successful two-year stretch in history. Since taking over in 2022, Odom has compiled a 19-8 record and guided the Rebels to back-to-back Mountain West championship game appearances.

This season, UNLV fell short in the Mountain West title game, losing 21-7 to Boise State on Friday. The loss dashed their hopes of securing a College Football Playoff berth but cemented Odom’s reputation as a coach capable of elevating a struggling program.

Potential Move to Purdue

Purdue University, which competes in the Big Ten Conference, is reportedly seeking Odom to revitalize its football program. Purdue’s leadership is believed to be impressed by Odom’s ability to quickly build competitive teams, as evidenced by his work at UNLV.

While the deal is not yet finalized, the possibility of Odom leaving UNLV comes as the Rebels prepare for their bowl game announcement. UNLV is scheduled to announce its bowl destination Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Fertitta Football Complex, with Odom expected to attend as of Saturday afternoon.

Impact on UNLV Football

Odom’s potential departure would mark a significant moment for UNLV football, which has seen unprecedented success under his leadership. The Rebels are poised to make consecutive bowl game appearances, a first in program history, further underscoring Odom’s impact.

Should Odom leave, UNLV would face the challenge of maintaining its newfound momentum under a new head coach. The program’s recent success, coupled with improved facilities and increased national visibility, could make it an attractive destination for coaching candidates.

What’s Next?

As negotiations reportedly continue, both UNLV and Purdue fans are watching closely. For Purdue, landing Odom could signal a new era of competitiveness in the Big Ten. For UNLV, Odom’s potential exit raises questions about the program’s future trajectory.

The Rebels’ bowl game assignment announcement on Sunday could offer more clarity about Odom’s plans and whether he will lead the team through the postseason.

🎰 Former Aristocrat CEO Tapped as Head of Combined IGT-Everi Gaming Giant

Hector Fernandez, the former CEO of Aristocrat Gaming, has been named the incoming CEO of the newly formed International Game Technology (IGT) entity, which will merge with Las Vegas-based Everi Holdings Inc. The announcement follows the companies' $6.3 billion merger, set to finalize by the third quarter of 2025.

Fernandez will officially take on the CEO role in late 2025, following the conclusion of a non-compete agreement. Until then, Nick Khin, currently president of global gaming at IGT, will serve as interim CEO.

Leadership Vision

Apollo Global Management Inc., which is overseeing the merger, emphasized Fernandez’s strong track record in scaling operations, fostering customer relationships, and building a values-driven workplace culture. Daniel Cohen, a partner at Apollo, highlighted Fernandez’s ability to lead the global workforce and drive innovation across gaming and fintech industries.

Fernandez expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity to guide the combined enterprise, which will be headquartered in Las Vegas.

The $6.3 Billion Merger

The merger, announced in February and expanded upon in July, involves IGT and Everi’s integration into a customer-centric platform for gaming equipment, digital innovation, and financial technology.

  • Transaction Details: IGT, previously operated from London with a focus on lottery operations, has spun off its gaming, digital, and fintech segments.

  • Approval: Everi shareholders greenlit the merger on Nov. 14.

  • Timeline: The deal is expected to close by Q3 2025.

Interim and Additional Leadership Roles

While Fernandez prepares to assume his CEO duties, several executives will manage key divisions of the combined company:

  • Nick Khin: Interim CEO, focusing on land-based gaming businesses.

  • Gil Rotem: CEO of Digital, leading IGT’s PlayDigital division.

  • Darren Simmons: CEO of FinTech, bringing expertise from Everi’s financial technology leadership.

Khin, a longtime IGT leader in Las Vegas, will oversee operations and maintain a focus on customer engagement. Apollo's leadership expressed confidence in Khin’s ability to maintain momentum and prepare for Fernandez’s transition.

A Strategic Shift

The merger positions the combined IGT and Everi entity to strengthen its market position in gaming and fintech, leveraging resources to create innovative, content-rich experiences for customers.

Apollo's confidence in the leadership team suggests a focus on seamless integration and continued success in a competitive industry.

Trump Visits Paris for Notre Dame Reopening, Talks Ukraine with Macron and Zelenskyy

President-elect Donald Trump attended the grand reopening of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris on Saturday, where he was greeted with full presidential honors by French President Emmanuel Macron. The visit, blending high-profile ceremony and urgent diplomacy, included a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, reflecting Europe’s efforts to secure U.S. support for Ukraine amid Russia’s ongoing invasion.

A Warm Reception

Trump’s arrival at the Élysée Palace was marked by a red-carpet welcome and a military honor guard, typically reserved for sitting American presidents. Macron extended a warm greeting, emphasizing the significance of the day and his hopes for continued strong ties with the U.S.

Inside the palace, Trump and Macron held a private meeting before being joined by Zelenskyy for a 35-minute discussion on Ukraine’s defense against Russia. Macron later described the meeting as a step toward reinforcing cooperation between the U.S., France, and Ukraine.

A Complex Dynamic

Trump’s return to the international stage as president-elect highlights the complexities of his relationship with Europe. Macron, who had a mixed relationship with Trump during his first term, is working to cultivate a renewed bond. The French president has expressed concerns about Trump’s ambiguous stance on Ukraine, particularly his promise to end the war swiftly without specifying terms.

Macron has argued to Trump and his advisers that a weakened Ukraine would be a geopolitical loss for the U.S. and its allies, potentially undermining Trump’s reputation as a dealmaker.

Zelenskyy and Ukraine’s Stakes

Zelenskyy’s inclusion in the talks underscores Ukraine’s efforts to secure continued U.S. support for its defense. With the Biden administration committing over $62 billion in aid to Ukraine since 2022, Trump’s election has raised uncertainty about future funding and military assistance.

To build trust, Zelenskyy’s top aide, Andriy Yermak, recently met with key members of Trump’s transition team in the U.S., emphasizing Ukraine’s importance as a democratic ally.

The Notre Dame Ceremony

At the reopened cathedral, Trump was seated prominently between Macron and his wife, Brigitte, signifying his importance on the global stage. First Lady Jill Biden, representing President Joe Biden, sat nearby but was given less visibility. The event celebrated the restoration of the iconic 861-year-old landmark, which was nearly destroyed by fire in 2019.

The ceremony brought together global figures, including Britain’s Prince William and Tesla CEO Elon Musk. Trump later met privately with William at the British ambassador’s residence, commending the prince for his leadership.

Diplomatic Maneuvers and Symbolism

Trump’s visit to Paris reflects a blend of high-level diplomacy and strategic positioning. Macron’s effort to include Trump in meaningful discussions, such as Ukraine’s war and Middle East tensions, signals Europe’s attempt to influence the incoming administration early.

Despite the pomp, the meeting raised questions about Trump’s readiness to navigate complex foreign policy issues. His advisory team in Paris lacked expertise on Ukraine, suggesting that more groundwork may be needed before Trump officially takes office on January 20, 2025.

Historic Significance

The trip to Notre Dame marked Trump’s second major Paris visit, following his attendance at France’s Bastille Day celebrations during his first term. While relations between the two leaders soured over time, Macron’s swift congratulations after Trump’s 2024 election victory signaled a willingness to reset ties.

For now, Trump’s presence in Paris reinforced his global stature and hinted at the diplomatic challenges and opportunities awaiting his administration.

🏡 The Housing Market in 2025: Key Predictions

Housing remains expensive, with the median sales price for a single-family home in the U.S. hitting $437,300 in October, up from $426,800 the previous month, according to U.S. Census data. Meanwhile, the median rent stood at $1,619, reflecting minimal changes year-over-year.

While the 2025 housing market’s trajectory is uncertain, industry experts and economists have outlined key trends likely to shape the year.

Home Prices Expected to Grow at a Moderate Pace

Home prices in the U.S. are projected to rise by about 4% over the course of 2025. This marks a normalization compared to the rapid increases seen during the pandemic years.

While price appreciation might stabilize, some volatility is expected, particularly during the spring buying season. Factors such as general tariffs on foreign goods and materials or changes in construction activity could create upward pressure on prices. Policy changes under the incoming administration may also influence the housing market, potentially driving higher costs if supply constraints worsen.

Flat Rent Prices with Increased Negotiation Power

The national median rent is expected to remain relatively flat in 2025 as new rental inventory becomes available. This stability could provide renters with more leverage in negotiations, with some landlords already offering incentives like free rent or waived fees in certain areas.

Local market conditions will remain a critical factor, with areas like Austin, Texas, experiencing rent declines due to increased supply, while cities like New York and Seattle see higher rent growth due to limited inventory.

Mortgage Rates to See a Bumpy Year

Mortgage rates are forecasted to average around 6.8% in 2025, potentially hovering in the low-6% range if the economy slows. However, fluctuations are likely, with borrowing costs influenced by policies that could drive inflation.

Mortgage rates declined this fall in anticipation of potential interest rate cuts but spiked again following the election. Experts expect volatility throughout the year, as the market adjusts to economic and political developments.

Increased Home Sales

Home sales are expected to rise in 2025, with approximately 4 million homes projected to be sold—a 2% to 9% increase from 2024. This boost is attributed to pent-up demand among buyers and sellers who have delayed their plans.

While more buyers may enter the market, the level of competition is not expected to reach the aggressive bidding wars of recent years. Factors such as rising property taxes and insurance costs may temper activity in some markets.

Climate Risks and Home Prices

Natural disasters and extreme weather risks are expected to play a larger role in shaping home prices. Markets in areas prone to hurricanes, wildfires, and flooding, such as coastal Florida, California, and parts of Texas, may see slower price growth or even declining values.

Insurance costs in high-risk areas are rising, and homes in regions unprepared for extreme weather may face additional maintenance and repair expenses. With climate patterns becoming less predictable, areas across the country are increasingly vulnerable, potentially leading to broader increases in insurance premiums.

Conclusion

The 2025 housing market is expected to see modest price growth, stable rent rates, and an increase in home sales. However, challenges such as climate risks, rising insurance costs, and fluctuating mortgage rates may affect affordability and market activity. Buyers, renters, and investors should remain vigilant about local market dynamics and potential policy impacts as the year unfolds.
