🚧 Las Vegas Strip Begins Final Phase of F1 Track Dismantling

Following the conclusion of the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix on Nov. 24, dismantling of the 3.8-mile street circuit continues across the resort corridor. Crews have been hard at work removing race-related infrastructure, including track barriers, lighting, and temporary pedestrian and vehicular bridges. The process is expected to wrap up by the end of December, clearing the way for normal traffic flow until preparations begin for next year’s race.

Here’s an update on the work being done and its impact on traffic:

Las Vegas Boulevard

Most of the dismantling work along the Strip has been completed. The remaining task is the removal of the Bellagio Fountain Club, a temporary structure built above the Bellagio Fountains. Two southbound lanes on Las Vegas Boulevard between Flamingo Road and Bellagio Drive will remain closed through Dec. 27 as crews finish the teardown. Access to the Bellagio remains open throughout the process.

Koval Lane

Ongoing work on Koval Lane involves:

  • Sidewalk Closures: Walkways near Flamingo Road remain closed as the temporary pedestrian bridge is dismantled.

  • Nightly Lane Reductions: Through Dec. 15, Koval Lane will have one lane open in each direction between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for the removal of track lighting and barriers.

  • Temporary Closure at Rochelle Avenue: Koval will be fully closed between 9 p.m. on Dec. 23 and 6 a.m. on Dec. 24 to dismantle a temporary pedestrian bridge.

Harmon Avenue

Crews will work nightly on Harmon Avenue until Dec. 24:

  • Harmon at Audrie Street: Nightly closures will continue through Dec. 15 between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m. as crews remove a temporary vehicular bridge. Left turns at the intersection are restricted throughout the day, with flaggers directing traffic.

  • Lane Reductions: From 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. through Dec. 15, Harmon will have one travel lane open in each direction as track lighting is removed.

  • Near Top Golf: A temporary closure is planned from 9 p.m. on Dec. 23 to 8 a.m. on Dec. 24 to dismantle another vehicular bridge.

Flamingo Road Bridge Removal

The most significant traffic disruption begins this weekend as the Flamingo Road vehicular bridge over Koval Lane is dismantled.

  • Full Intersection Closure: Flamingo and Koval will be closed to all traffic from 9 p.m. on Dec. 17 through 9 p.m. on Dec. 21.

  • Access Points: Businesses near the intersection will remain accessible via limited routes. For example:

    • The Westin: Accessible via the westernmost Flamingo entrance.

    • Jay’s Market, ARCO Gas Station, and others: Reachable via Koval.

    • Ellis Island and Platinum Hotel: Accessible via one-way traffic on Flamingo with flaggers assisting.

Public Transit Detours

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) will implement detours for several bus routes affected by the closure, including Route 119, Route 202, and the Centennial Express. Riders can visit RTC Alerts or call 702-228-7433 for detailed information.

Timeline for Completion

By the end of December, all dismantling work related to the Las Vegas Grand Prix will be complete. Normal traffic conditions will return across the Strip and surrounding areas until preparations for the 2025 race begin later next year.

🏒 Golden Knights Embrace the Challenge of 4 Nations Face-Off

Seven Golden Knights players, along with coach Bruce Cassidy, are set to participate in the NHL’s 4 Nations Face-Off in February, an international tournament featuring teams from the United States, Canada, Sweden, and Finland. While the tournament offers a chance to represent their countries and showcase elite talent, it also comes with the challenge of balancing high-intensity competition with the need for midseason rest.

A New Twist for the NHL Season

Replacing the NHL All-Star Game, which had waned in popularity, the 4 Nations Face-Off runs from Feb. 12 to 20. Teams will play round-robin games in Montreal, with the two top teams advancing to the finals. The tournament serves as a precursor to the 2026 Winter Olympics and aims to inject excitement into the NHL’s midseason schedule by featuring the league’s top talent.

For the Knights, the event begins just days after wrapping a four-game road trip in Boston on Feb. 8.

Rest vs. Competition

While representing their countries is an honor, the tournament demands could impact players who might otherwise benefit from the NHL’s two-week break. Players like defenseman Alex Pietrangelo and forward Mark Stone recognize the challenge of balancing recovery and competition.

The Knights are well aware of the importance of rest during a grueling season. In 2023, a midseason break was pivotal, as the team rebounded from a slump to dominate the second half of the year, ultimately winning the Stanley Cup.

This season, players like Stone and Jack Eichel have already faced injury-related absences. Stone recently returned from a 14-game hiatus, while Eichel, third in the NHL with 39 points, has dealt with injuries in past seasons. Maintaining health and energy will be a priority for the team as they prepare for the postseason.

Knights’ Representation and Pride

Despite the physical toll, Knights players are eager to seize the opportunity to compete at the international level. For many, this marks the first time since the 2016 World Cup of Hockey or the 2014 Olympics that they will experience a best-on-best tournament.

Eichel expressed enthusiasm for proving the growth of USA Hockey and closing the perceived gap with powerhouse nations like Canada. The Knights’ other representatives, including Pietrangelo, Shea Theodore, and other key players, share similar sentiments about the pride and responsibility of representing their countries.

Preparing for the 4 Nations and Beyond

The Knights face a manageable schedule after the tournament, with much of the season’s most intense stretch already behind them. This includes a grueling run of 10 games in 17 days, where the team posted an impressive 7-2-1 record.

The 4 Nations Face-Off also serves as preparation for the 2026 Winter Olympics, where international hockey will once again take center stage.

A Balancing Act

For Cassidy and the Knights, managing player workloads post-tournament will be crucial. While the event offers players a chance to shine on the world stage, the team’s ultimate focus remains on maintaining momentum and health for the playoff push.

The Knights are optimistic about the benefits of the tournament, with players like Eichel emphasizing the pride and competitive edge it brings. Despite sacrificing rest, the opportunity to compete in a high-stakes international event makes it all worthwhile.

“It’s going to be super competitive and an incredible experience for the league and its players,” Eichel said.

🎰 Leadership Shake-Up at Resorts World Las Vegas Amid Regulatory Scrutiny

Resorts World Las Vegas, a prominent Strip casino facing significant allegations from Nevada gaming regulators, has announced a top-level leadership change in response to ongoing challenges. Genting Berhad, the parent company, has named Jim Murren, former CEO and board chairman of MGM Resorts International, as chairman of a newly established four-person board of directors.

The move is part of an effort to strengthen the property’s governance and develop a robust strategy to address operational and reputational issues. Alex Dixon, a Las Vegas native with executive experience at MGM Resorts and Caesars Entertainment, will assume the role of CEO starting Jan. 16, 2025.

A New Oversight Structure

The board, led by Murren, includes A.G. Burnett, a former chair of the Nevada Gaming Control Board (NGCB); Michelle DiTondo, a seasoned HR executive from MGM and Caesars; and Kong Han Tan, Genting’s president and COO. This group will oversee the casino’s leadership team to ensure compliance and foster growth.

The leadership changes coincide with an upcoming deadline for Resorts World to respond to a 12-count complaint filed by the NGCB in August. The complaint accuses the property of serious lapses, including allowing illicit gambling activities and failing to implement effective anti-money laundering measures. Potential penalties include substantial fines or even license suspension.

Addressing Financial and Operational Challenges

The leadership overhaul follows a challenging period for Resorts World, which reported its worst financial quarter in two years. The company attributed its poor third-quarter performance to external factors such as extreme summer heat and domestic election uncertainties.

Despite these setbacks, the casino has surpassed other Strip properties in terms of foot traffic and general engagement. However, the NGCB’s allegations cast a shadow over its operations.

The complaint alleges a permissive culture under the leadership of former CEO Scott Sibella, who was terminated in 2023. According to the NGCB, Resorts World executives allowed individuals with suspected ties to organized crime and illegal bookmaking to operate within the casino. This contributed to an environment conducive to potential money laundering and other criminal activities.

Murren’s Return to Las Vegas

Jim Murren brings decades of experience to his new role, having previously overseen MGM Resorts during a period of significant growth. His leadership portfolio includes work with Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection and Cirque du Soleil. Murren’s familiarity with the gaming industry and regulatory challenges is expected to play a critical role in guiding Resorts World through its current difficulties.

However, Murren’s involvement raises questions given his prior professional relationship with Sibella, who worked under him at MGM. Federal authorities recently charged Sibella with failing to report suspicious financial activities during his tenure at MGM Grand, further complicating the backdrop of the ongoing investigation into Resorts World.

A Path Forward

Alex Dixon, who steps into the CEO role in January, has expressed optimism about the property’s future. Dixon’s prior experience in leading gaming operations and community-focused initiatives positions him well to steer the casino toward a brighter horizon.

In the interim, Murren and the oversight board will focus on rebuilding trust with regulators and the public. Genting Berhad Chairman Kok Thay Lim has emphasized the importance of these leadership changes in driving compliance and maintaining Resorts World’s reputation as a premier destination on the Strip.

The Nevada Gaming Commission has yet to adjudicate the NGCB’s complaint, but the new leadership team will play a critical role in navigating the property through these regulatory and operational challenges.

Trump Names Alina Habba as Counselor to the President in Upcoming Administration

President-elect Donald Trump has selected Alina Habba, one of his attorneys in the New York hush money case, to serve as counselor to the president in his second administration. The announcement was made on Sunday, highlighting Habba's prominent role as a close advisor and public defender of Trump throughout his legal and political battles.

Habba, 40, previously acted as Trump’s legal spokesperson and gained recognition for her staunch advocacy during his numerous court appearances. She has been a visible figure in Trump’s inner circle, accompanying him on the campaign trail and serving as a key voice in his legal strategy. Her appointment is part of Trump’s effort to build a team of trusted and experienced allies to shape his administration’s agenda.

A Trusted Ally with a Legal Background

Habba’s appointment as counselor to the president marks her transition from the courtroom to a critical advisory role in the White House. The position, which was previously held by Republican strategist Kellyanne Conway during Trump’s first term, will make Habba a key figure in shaping the administration’s policies and responses to ongoing legal and political challenges.

Habba, who has Iraqi ancestry and is a member of the Chaldean Catholic Church, is part of a prominent Christian denomination within the Catholic Church's Eastern rites. Her background adds a layer of diversity to Trump's team, which he has often emphasized as part of his commitment to broadening the representation in his administration.

Defending Trump Amid Legal Battles

Habba played a significant role in defending Trump earlier this year when he became the first former U.S. president to be convicted of felony crimes. A New York jury found him guilty of 34 charges related to a scheme to illegally influence the 2016 election through hush money payments to a porn actor.

Despite the conviction, Habba remained one of Trump’s most vocal defenders, working tirelessly to frame the charges as politically motivated. Her unwavering loyalty during these legal battles was a key factor in her appointment, with Trump praising her resilience and dedication.

A Familiar Face on the Campaign Trail

In addition to her legal work, Habba was a prominent figure during Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign. She frequently joined him on the trail, addressing crowds at major rallies and advocating for his policies. Her role as a campaign surrogate solidified her standing within Trump’s circle, making her a natural choice for a senior position in his upcoming administration.

Habba’s appointment reflects Trump’s strategy of rewarding allies who have demonstrated loyalty and effectiveness in navigating both political and legal challenges.

Other Key Appointments

Trump also announced several other appointments as he continues to shape his administration’s leadership.

  • Michael Anton, a former National Security Council spokesman from 2017 to 2018, will serve as director of policy planning at the State Department. Anton’s experience in foreign policy will be vital as Trump seeks to reshape the U.S. approach to global affairs.

  • Michael Needham, a former chief of staff to Sen. Marco Rubio, has been named counselor of the State Department. Rubio, who has been chosen by Trump to serve as secretary of state, is expected to work closely with Needham in steering the administration’s foreign policy initiatives.

💹 S&P 500 Projections for 2025 Set a New Record

Oppenheimer's chief investment strategist, John Stoltzfus, has set a bold year-end 2025 target for the S&P 500 at 7,100, marking the highest projection among Wall Street analysts tracked by Yahoo Finance. The forecast represents approximately a 17% upside from the index's closing level last Friday, signaling continued optimism about the U.S. stock market's trajectory.

In his note to clients on Sunday night, Stoltzfus attributed his bullish outlook to factors including resilient economic growth, steady monetary policy, robust consumer activity, and solid job creation. His forecast sets a high bar compared to other analysts, with projections ranging from 6,400 to 7,007.

Key Factors Supporting the 7,100 Target

Stoltzfus predicts that earnings growth and high market valuations will drive the S&P 500’s performance. His target assumes earnings per share (EPS) for the index will reach $275, representing a 10% growth from his year-end 2024 estimate.

In addition to earnings growth, Stoltzfus expects the S&P 500's forward price-to-earnings (P/E) ratio to rise to 25.8 times forward earnings, a significant premium to the five-year average of 20. This optimistic P/E projection underscores his confidence in sustained investor appetite for equities.

Broader Economic Resilience

Stoltzfus is one of several Wall Street strategists emphasizing economic resilience as a key factor for continued market strength. Wells Fargo strategist Christopher Harvey, the only other analyst predicting the S&P 500 will surpass 7,000 by the end of 2025, similarly highlighted upward revisions in GDP growth as a catalyst for equity performance.

A major theme in Stoltzfus's analysis is the ongoing broadening of the equity rally. While much of the market's gains in recent years have been concentrated in the so-called "Magnificent Seven" tech stocks, Stoltzfus sees a growing contribution from the remaining 493 companies in the index as a sign of a healthier and more sustainable bull market.

Artificial Intelligence as a Tailwind

Stoltzfus also pointed to the transformative potential of artificial intelligence (AI) across all 11 sectors of the S&P 500. He views AI as a productivity driver that could improve efficiencies across industries, providing a long-term tailwind for economic and corporate growth.

While Stoltzfus cautions against unrealistic expectations of a "perfect world," he emphasizes the potential for AI to address critical challenges and unlock solutions more rapidly by analyzing vast amounts of data. This, in turn, could create opportunities across diverse sectors, rather than being limited to technology-focused industries.

A Bull Market With Staying Power

Stoltzfus is optimistic that the current bull market, despite broader concerns about inflation and geopolitical uncertainty, has the momentum to continue through 2025. He referenced the market's ability to climb the "wall of worry" as an indicator of its strength.

This outlook aligns with recent trends that show investor confidence extending beyond large-cap tech stocks into other sectors, suggesting that the rally could have more room to grow as participation broadens.

Outlook

The S&P 500’s 2025 target of 7,100 reflects a combination of factors, including resilient earnings growth, higher valuations, and the transformative impact of AI. While Stoltzfus acknowledges potential challenges, his bullish stance indicates optimism about the market’s capacity to navigate uncertainties and deliver robust returns for investors over the next two years.
