💥 Tragedy on I-15: Off-Duty LVMPD Officer Killed in Wrong-Way Crash

Officer Colton Pulsipher

A wrong-way crash on Interstate 15 near Valley of Fire State Park early Thursday morning claimed the lives of two men, including an off-duty Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) officer. The collision, involving multiple vehicles, occurred around 12:26 a.m., leaving a third person injured.

Details of the Crash

Nevada State Police reported that a wrong-way driver traveling southbound on I-15 collided with several northbound vehicles near mile marker 75. Two men were pronounced dead at the scene, while a woman was airlifted to a local hospital via Mercy Air with non-life-threatening injuries.

Officer Colton Pulsipher Among Victims

LVMPD identified one of the victims as Officer Colton Pulsipher, who was driving home in his personal vehicle after completing his shift. Pulsipher, 33, had been a member of the force since 2017 and was assigned to the Tourist Safety Division within the Traffic Bureau.

Pulsipher is survived by his wife and three young children. In a statement, LVMPD expressed its sorrow, saying, "The entire department mourns the loss of Officer Pulsipher. He was a dedicated public servant committed to the safety of our community."

Impact on Traffic

In the aftermath of the crash, authorities initially closed lanes near mile marker 75. The closures have since been extended to the I-15 and US 93 junction, with northbound traffic being diverted onto US 93. Southbound lanes of I-15 remain open.

State police have indicated that the I-15 northbound closure will persist for an undetermined amount of time as investigators work to determine the circumstances leading to the tragedy. Drivers are urged to proceed cautiously through the area and prepare for significant delays.

Ongoing Investigation

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the wrong-way driver or provided further details about the cause of the crash. Investigators will be examining the sequence of events leading to the collision, as wrong-way incidents often involve factors such as impaired driving or disorientation.

Community Mourns a Fallen Officer

The death of Officer Pulsipher marks a somber moment for the LVMPD and the Las Vegas community. Friends, colleagues, and residents have begun offering condolences to the Pulsipher family, honoring his service and dedication to public safety.

The crash serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of wrong-way driving, and law enforcement officials continue to advocate for heightened awareness and preventative measures to avoid such tragedies in the future.

🏈 Dan Mullen to Replace Barry Odom as UNLV Football Coach

Former Mississippi State and Florida head coach Dan Mullen will take the reins of UNLV’s football program, succeeding Barry Odom, a source confirmed Thursday. The 52-year-old Mullen, currently a TV analyst for ABC and ESPN, brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of rebuilding programs in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Impressive Coaching Resume

Mullen boasts a 103-61 career record across 13 seasons as a head coach at Mississippi State (2009-2017) and Florida (2018-2021). His tenure includes several notable turnaround efforts:

  • Mississippi State Success: Before Mullen's arrival in 2009, the Bulldogs endured a 29-65 record over eight seasons. By his second year, Mullen led the team to a nine-win season, culminating in a 52-14 victory over Michigan in the Gator Bowl—the largest bowl victory margin in school history.

    • In 2014, Mullen guided the Bulldogs to a No. 1 national ranking and a 10-3 finish, earning SEC Coach of the Year honors.

    • Over nine seasons, he posted a 69-46 record, including five bowl victories in eight appearances. He remains the program’s winningest coach, with no other coach achieving more than two bowl wins.

  • Florida Turnaround: Mullen’s impact at Florida was immediate. Taking over a 4-7 team in 2017, he led the Gators to a 10-3 record in his first season.

    • In 2019, Florida recorded 11 wins, the most since 2012.

    • The 2020 team led the nation in passing offense, averaging 378.6 yards per game, showcasing Mullen’s offensive expertise.

Challenges and Departure from Florida

Mullen’s tenure at Florida ended on a sour note. After a strong start, the Gators struggled, finishing the 2020 season with three consecutive losses and a final record of 8-4. The 2021 season saw continued struggles, with Florida going 2-9 against Power Five opponents during a stretch that included the last three games of 2020. A 24-23 overtime loss to Missouri in November 2021 ultimately led to Mullen’s dismissal.

UNLV Transition

Mullen replaces Barry Odom, who led the Rebels to a historic 19-8 record over two seasons, including back-to-back bowl appearances—a first for the program. Odom departed to become the head coach at Purdue, where his salary will increase from $1.75 million at UNLV to $6 million in his first year with the Boilermakers.

Mullen, who earned $7.57 million in his final year at Florida, brings a wealth of experience and high expectations to the Rebels. His hiring signals UNLV’s ambition to build upon its recent success and further elevate its football program.

🎰 Fontainebleau Marks One Year on the Las Vegas Strip, Eyes Future Growth

The Fontainebleau Las Vegas celebrates its first year of operation, bringing new life to a project that had been stalled for nearly two decades. Originally envisioned in 2005, the 67-story, 3,644-room resort faced numerous challenges, including the Great Recession and years of changing ownership. In 2021, Fontainebleau Development, led by CEO Jeffrey Soffer, reclaimed the $3.7 billion project, completing what had been a long-standing vision.

The property’s debut year was marked by growing pains, including leadership changes and initial struggles to attract the expected visitor volume. However, resort management now sees a clear path forward, focusing on enhancing customer experiences, refining marketing strategies, and laying the groundwork for future growth.

A Challenging Start

When Fontainebleau Las Vegas opened its doors, it relied heavily on the customer database of its Miami Beach counterpart. This approach left many Western U.S. visitors unfamiliar with the brand, affecting the resort’s early performance. The property’s upscale design, featuring marble accents, blue glass, and mosaic tiles, along with a robust offering of dining, retail, and convention spaces, initially struggled to draw significant crowds.

Leadership changes came swiftly. About six weeks after opening, the resort brought in an industry veteran with over three decades of experience to stabilize operations. One of the new president’s key initiatives was fostering collaboration among a team assembled from various Las Vegas properties and beyond. Improved communication and inter-department cooperation became a cornerstone of the resort’s management strategy.

Refining the Brand and Guest Experience

Management quickly identified gaps in the property’s marketing and guest experience strategies. The initial advertising campaign emphasized luxury and modernity but failed to highlight the property’s unique amenities. Recognizing the need to resonate with the competitive Las Vegas market, the marketing approach shifted to showcase the Fontainebleau’s standout features, including its restaurants, retail outlets, and entertainment options.

Promotions played a significant role in boosting engagement. The property extended a tier-matching program for casino loyalty members, allowing guests to transfer their status from competitors’ programs. Initially a short-term promotion, it lasted over six months due to its success. Additionally, free valet parking was introduced for patrons dining, shopping, gambling, or visiting the spa—a perk management plans to continue into 2025.

Entertainment became another focal point, with the Fontainebleau opting for a variety of performances rather than committing to a single residency. Artists like Pitbull, Keith Urban, and Duran Duran have graced the stage, while other events, such as Dana White’s Power Slap competitions, have added unique appeal. The showroom, BleauLive, has been key in attracting non-hotel guests, with management hoping these visitors will consider staying at the property in the future.

Positioned for Growth

Looking ahead, Fontainebleau aims to expand its influence on the north Strip. The resort sits in a corridor ripe for development, with significant land parcels nearby being marketed for new projects, including a potential NBA-ready arena. Management envisions the area evolving into a destination where guests can seamlessly move between neighboring properties, similar to the central Strip.

In a strategic move, Fontainebleau Development acquired a five-acre parcel directly south of the resort for $112.5 million. While specific plans for the land remain undisclosed, the purchase underscores the company’s commitment to the property’s future and its belief in the growth potential of the north Strip.

A Path Forward

As Fontainebleau enters its second year, its leadership is focused on turning first-time visitors into loyal guests. By refining its marketing efforts, enhancing guest experiences, and leveraging its entertainment offerings, the property aims to carve out a lasting place in the competitive Las Vegas market. With room for expansion and a clear vision, Fontainebleau Las Vegas is positioning itself as a key player in the city’s evolving landscape.

Donald Trump Rings NYSE Opening Bell After Being Named Time's Person of the Year Again

President-elect Donald Trump marked another milestone in his comeback on Thursday by ringing the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). This first-ever honor for Trump came shortly after he was named Time magazine's Person of the Year for 2024, an accolade he previously received in 2016.

The dual recognition reflects Trump’s transition from being an ostracized former president to a decisive victor in the 2024 presidential election. Appearing at the NYSE alongside family members and members of his incoming administration, Trump celebrated the moment while emphasizing plans for his presidency. The Time cover featuring Trump was prominently displayed at the event, alongside American flags.

A Historic Comeback and Plans Ahead

Trump’s rise back to power has been described as historic, with Time magazine citing his influence on reshaping American politics and the presidency itself. The magazine noted that Trump’s election marked a turning point in the political landscape, driven by his ability to tap into widespread voter discontent.

Speaking at the NYSE, Trump highlighted his administration’s goals, including promises to streamline federal permits for major construction projects and reforms to boost economic growth. The incoming administration is expected to prioritize deregulation, tax cuts, and pro-business policies, which have already garnered praise from the business community.

Global Spotlight on Trump's Recognition

Time magazine’s editor-in-chief described Trump as the most influential person in news in 2024, adding that this year’s selection process was less contentious than in previous years. Trump was chosen over finalists including Vice President Kamala Harris, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk, and Kate, the Princess of Wales.

Trump’s history with Time magazine stretches back to 1989. However, his fascination with the publication has been well-documented, including past claims about his record number of cover appearances and the revelation that fake Time covers featuring him once adorned several of his golf clubs.

Economic Implications of a Trump Presidency

Trump’s return to the presidency has already prompted financial markets to react. His promises to reduce corporate taxes and ease regulations have drawn positive responses from business leaders, although there is concern about his inclination to impose tariffs and target companies based on perceived political alignment.

Historically, the U.S. stock market has performed well under presidents from both parties. Still, analysts predict significant shifts in specific industries due to Trump’s proposed policies. Investors are particularly focused on how increased tariffs, tax reforms, and lighter regulations might affect various sectors.

Policy Highlights and Controversial Plans

In his recent Time interview, Trump reiterated key policy objectives, including mass deportations and a strict approach to immigration. He has claimed that the military will play a role in enforcing border security, stating his actions would comply with the maximum extent of the law, despite legal constraints under the Posse Comitatus Act.

Trump also touched on foreign policy, vowing to end the conflict in Gaza and expressing skepticism about trust in world leaders, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. His plans for widespread pardons of individuals convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol riot signal a continued alignment with his core base of supporters.

A Moment of Symbolism at the NYSE

The NYSE has long used its opening bell ceremony to highlight cultural and political moments. Trump’s participation underscored his influence not just in politics but also in the business world. The occasion was reminiscent of past honors, including Time CEO Jessica Sibley ringing the opening bell last year to celebrate Taylor Swift’s Person of the Year recognition.

Trump’s NYSE appearance, flanked by family and administration members, further cemented his image as a figure who bridges the worlds of business and politics. As the stock market navigates expectations for his policies, Trump’s actions will undoubtedly continue to shape both national and global discussions.

💹 U.S. Economy Remains Strong, but Risks Loom Under Trump’s Incoming Administration

Mark Zandi

As President-elect Donald Trump prepares to take office, the U.S. economy is in a position of strength, according to Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics. Speaking at the Consumer Federation of America’s financial services conference, Zandi highlighted key indicators of economic health: steady GDP growth around 3%, rising productivity, robust business formation rates, and a thriving stock market.

However, Zandi cautioned that potential disruptions could emerge in 2025 as the new administration implements campaign promises.

Economic Strength and Resilience

Zandi underscored the economy's resilience, noting its ability to endure challenges. The labor market, bolstered in part by recent immigration, has addressed critical labor shortages in sectors that saw tight conditions over the past two years. Additionally, consumer spending and business investment remain solid, supporting continued growth.

Risks from Immigration and Tariff Policies

Despite the optimism, Zandi highlighted two areas of concern: immigration policy and tariffs. Trump has signaled aggressive action on both fronts, which could have profound economic implications.

Immigration Policy Changes

Trump’s pledge to ramp up deportations could disrupt industries reliant on immigrant labor. Immigration has historically supported economic growth, particularly in sectors facing labor shortages. Analysts from Goldman Sachs noted earlier this year that recent immigrants have filled crucial gaps in tight labor markets, making them essential contributors to economic stability.

Removing a significant portion of this workforce could strain businesses and slow productivity gains.

Tariffs and Consumer Impact

Trump’s proposed tariffs—potentially as high as 10% to 20% on all imports—pose risks to both businesses and consumers. Higher import taxes could lead to significant cost increases for everyday goods, such as clothing, furniture, and household appliances.

A National Retail Federation (NRF) report warns that tariffs would lead to “dramatic” price hikes across key retail categories. For instance, clothing costs could rise between 12.5% and 20.6%, turning an $80 pair of jeans into a $90 to $96 expense. Such increases would disproportionately burden low-income households, which allocate a larger share of their budgets to apparel compared to wealthier households.

Businesses also face uncertainty from tariffs, which could dampen investment and lead to job losses. Higher consumer prices could reduce discretionary spending, further straining sectors reliant on retail and services.

Looking Ahead

While the economy is currently robust, the implementation of aggressive immigration policies and sweeping tariffs could introduce volatility in 2025. Higher costs for businesses and consumers, coupled with potential workforce disruptions, may challenge the resilience seen in recent years.

Zandi’s assessment serves as both a snapshot of current economic health and a warning of the potential obstacles ahead under the incoming administration.
