🌡 Southern Nevada’s Drought Conditions Escalate Amid Record Dry Spell
Las Vegas’ 2024 monsoon season delivered disappointing results, leading federal meteorologists to classify the region's drought conditions as "extreme." This elevated designation underscores the challenges posed by climate change in the desert Southwest, as prolonged dry spells continue to strain water resources and exacerbate drought conditions.
A Record-Breaking Dry Streak
Southern Nevada has endured 151 consecutive days without measurable rainfall — defined as more than one-tenth of an inch — making 2024 the second-driest year on record since tracking began in 1937. This streak is second only to 2020’s record of 240 rainless days.
The persistent lack of rain is a key factor in the U.S. Drought Monitor’s decision to elevate Southern Nevada’s drought status to "extreme," the second-highest level of concern. Meteorologists also consider other indicators like soil moisture and groundwater flows in determining drought severity.
While the region typically experiences dry spells, the current streak aligns with broader trends of increasing aridity across the West, attributed to climate change.
Rainfall’s Limited Impact on Reservoirs
Despite the significance of local rainfall for day-to-day weather, its influence on the water levels of Lake Mead — Southern Nevada’s primary water source — is minimal. The reservoir’s health is more directly tied to snowfall in the Rocky Mountains, which feeds the Colorado River.
As of this week, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reported snowpack levels in the Rockies above Lake Powell — another critical reservoir in the Colorado River system — at about 96% of average.
Even major rain events, like Tropical Storm Hilary in 2023, brought negligible gains to Lake Mead, highlighting the importance of upstream snowpack over local precipitation.
Long-Term Drought Trends and Water Conservation
The escalation to “extreme” drought reflects the broader trend of prolonged dryness across the West. Meteorologists note that while these conditions aren’t unprecedented, they have become increasingly common over recent decades.
To address this reality, the Southern Nevada Water Authority (SNWA) continues to prioritize long-term water conservation strategies. The agency has been proactive in banking water for future use, preparing for potential reductions in Colorado River allocations as the river system faces ongoing strain.
SNWA’s conservation measures include initiatives such as rebates for homeowners who replace grass lawns with water-efficient landscaping. The agency also imposes fees on excessive water use to encourage responsible consumption.
Adapting to a Hotter, Drier Future
As the region braces for continued dryness, officials emphasize the importance of conservation efforts to ensure the community’s resilience. While some residents have expressed concerns over water-saving policies and associated fees, Southern Nevada’s conservation model is often cited as an example for other Western communities facing similar challenges.
These efforts aim to adapt to a future shaped by climate change, where hotter and drier conditions are increasingly the norm. For now, the extended dry spell and the region’s elevated drought status serve as reminders of the critical importance of sustainable water management.
🏒 Barbashev's OT Heroics Lift Golden Knights to 3-2 Victory Over Jets
The Vegas Golden Knights continued their winning streak with a thrilling 3-2 overtime victory against the Winnipeg Jets on Thursday at the Canada Life Centre. Ivan Barbashev sealed the game for the Knights, scoring the decisive goal with just 1:15 left in the extra frame. The win marks Vegas' fourth consecutive triumph and their eighth straight victory over the Jets.
Late-Game Drama Sets Up Overtime
The Knights faced a tough challenge in regulation but found a way to prevail in dramatic fashion. Trailing late in the third period, left wing Victor Olofsson came through in the clutch, tying the game 2-2 with a five-on-three power-play goal with only 1:49 left on the clock. The goal injected energy into the Knights, setting the stage for an exciting finish.
Keegan Kolesar also contributed to the Knights' offense, finding the back of the net earlier in the game to keep Vegas in contention. The balanced scoring effort was crucial as the team worked to overcome a resilient Winnipeg squad.
Barbashev Shines in the Spotlight
Barbashev's overtime heroics underscored his importance to the Golden Knights' lineup. Displaying poise and precision, he capitalized on an opportunity to secure the win, further solidifying the Knights' status as one of the NHL's top-performing teams this season. With this victory, the Knights improved their record to 19-7-3, maintaining their strong standing in the Pacific Division.
A Winning Streak with Momentum
Thursday’s victory extends the Knights' win streak to four games, a stretch marked by consistent performances across all areas of the ice. The team’s ability to deliver in high-pressure situations has been a defining trait of their success this season.
The win also continues the Knights’ dominance over the Jets, with Vegas now boasting an eight-game winning streak against the Canadian team. The Jets, who are battling for playoff positioning in the Central Division, put up a valiant effort but couldn’t break the Knights’ stronghold in overtime.
Special Teams Play Makes the Difference
Special teams proved to be a pivotal factor in the game. The Knights capitalized on their power-play opportunities, highlighted by Olofsson’s late equalizer. The team's penalty kill also held firm, neutralizing key chances for the Jets and ensuring the game remained within reach.
What’s Next for the Golden Knights
The Knights will look to keep their momentum going as they continue their road trip. With strong offensive contributions and solid goaltending backing them up, the team is well-positioned to extend their streak further.
For the Jets, the loss represents another missed opportunity to gain traction in a competitive Central Division. Despite the setback, Winnipeg displayed resilience and will aim to bounce back in their next outing.
Vegas’ thrilling win in Winnipeg reaffirms their status as a powerhouse in the NHL, driven by late-game heroics, disciplined play, and a knack for rising to the occasion in crunch time.

❎ Amazon to Donate $1 Million to Trump Inauguration Fund and Stream Event on Prime Video
Amazon is set to donate $1 million to President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration fund, marking a notable gesture from the tech giant as the industry looks to improve relations with the incoming administration. Alongside the monetary contribution, Amazon will stream Trump’s inauguration on its Prime Video service, an in-kind donation valued at an additional $1 million.
This announcement, initially reported by The Wall Street Journal, follows Meta’s $1 million donation to Trump’s inaugural fund. Both moves highlight efforts by major tech companies to align with Trump’s administration after years of contentious relations.
Past Tensions Between Trump and Bezos
Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and Trump have had a history of public disputes. During Trump’s first term, the former president frequently criticized Amazon and The Washington Post, which Bezos owns, for perceived political bias. In turn, Bezos had previously expressed disapproval of Trump’s rhetoric.
In 2019, Amazon argued in a legal case that Trump’s bias influenced the Pentagon’s decision to award a $10 billion defense contract to Microsoft over Amazon. Despite past friction, Bezos has recently adopted a more conciliatory tone, expressing optimism about Trump’s second term and endorsing the administration’s plans to ease regulations.
A Shift in Corporate Engagement
The donation marks a sharp increase from Amazon’s $58,000 contribution to Trump’s 2017 inaugural fund. The company’s decision to stream the event on Prime Video aligns with its broader strategy of showcasing national events to its audience.
Meta’s contribution also signals a shift. The company did not donate to either Biden’s 2021 inaugural or Trump’s 2017 inaugural. However, recent moves, including a private meeting between Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Trump at Mar-a-Lago, reflect efforts to rebuild bridges. Zuckerberg has reportedly expressed support for Trump’s economic policies and emphasized Meta’s desire to move past tensions stemming from Facebook’s decision to suspend Trump following the January 6 Capitol attack.
Corporate Donations and Inauguration Traditions
Corporate donations have long played a significant role in funding presidential inaugurals. Barack Obama notably declined corporate contributions for his 2009 inaugural but accepted them for his 2013 event. Other tech giants have varied their contributions in the past, with Google donating to both Trump’s and Biden’s inaugurals, and Microsoft scaling down its contributions over successive administrations.
Amazon’s increased support underscores a broader strategy to engage positively with the new administration. By significantly boosting its financial contribution and providing digital coverage of the event, the company seeks to reinforce its presence in the evolving political and regulatory landscape.
A New Chapter for Tech and Politics
As Trump prepares to begin his second term, the relationship between major tech companies and the federal government enters a new phase. Amazon’s and Meta’s moves demonstrate a calculated effort to strengthen ties with an administration that has expressed mixed views on the industry.
With heightened scrutiny on corporate influence and regulation, these contributions reflect not just goodwill but a recognition of the importance of aligning with political power to navigate future challenges and opportunities.
💹 Investors Look to 2025 for Opportunities Amid New Administration and Tech Advancements
As the year turns and a new presidential administration prepares to take office, investors are eyeing potential opportunities for above-average returns. With continued interest rate cuts and anticipated market-friendly policies under President-elect Donald Trump, experts predict favorable conditions for business and technology sectors.
At the CNBC Financial Advisor Summit, venture capitalist Bradley Tusk, co-founder of Tusk Venture Partners, highlighted promising areas for growth, particularly in generative artificial intelligence (AI) and cryptocurrency.
Economic Outlook
The current economic environment is marked by strong growth potential. Interest rate reductions and a shift in regulatory attitudes under the incoming administration are expected to boost markets. The anticipation of pro-business policies could create fertile ground for investments in emerging technologies, fintech, healthcare tech, and energy.
Generative AI: A Turning Point
Generative AI has been a key driver of the 2024 stock market rally, and investment professionals remain optimistic about its long-term potential. However, 2025 could be a pivotal year for the technology.
Despite its hype, generative AI is still in a phase of "unfulfilled potential," with many companies heavily invested in research and development. While the technology has shown promise in areas like drug discovery, education, and mineral exploration, its economic viability must become evident.
For AI to transition from exciting concepts to tangible success, companies need to demonstrate revenue generation or cost savings. Federal regulation of generative AI remains an open question, with calls for stronger leadership at the national level to create a consistent framework for development and implementation.
Cryptocurrency: A Changing Landscape
Cryptocurrency could see a more favorable regulatory environment under the new administration. Current regulators, including SEC Chair Gary Gensler, have taken a strict approach to crypto, leaving the industry with limited guidance.
A shift in tone is expected as Trump’s administration appoints new leaders at agencies like the SEC, Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and Treasury. The incoming administration’s potentially friendlier stance could reduce barriers for innovation and trading in the crypto space.
Legislation may also play a significant role. The Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act (FIT21), passed by the House of Representatives in May, aims to foster digital asset innovation while ensuring consumer protection. With a Republican majority in the Senate, the bill has a strong chance of becoming law, paving the way for more clarity and freedom in crypto markets.
Broader Implications for Investors
The upcoming year holds significant promise for investors willing to navigate the evolving landscape. Key developments in AI and cryptocurrency will likely shape the direction of financial markets.
Investors are advised to monitor regulatory changes, technological advancements, and legislative progress closely. The combination of innovation and policy shifts could open new opportunities while redefining traditional investment strategies.
As 2025 unfolds, these sectors may emerge as critical areas for growth, offering investors avenues to achieve above-average returns in a rapidly changing economic climate.
