🏫 CCSD Interim Superintendent Brenda Larsen-Mitchell Declines to Apply for Permanent Role
Brenda Larsen-Mitchell, the interim superintendent of the Clark County School District (CCSD), announced Friday that she will not seek the district's permanent superintendent position.
In an email to district staff, Larsen-Mitchell stated that the decision was difficult but made in the best interests of the district, its students, and employees. She emphasized her commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and said she would remain in her interim role until a new superintendent is selected in March.
30 Years of Service
Larsen-Mitchell has been with CCSD for 30 years, serving in various capacities, including special education teacher, principal, principal supervisor, deputy superintendent, and interim superintendent. She stepped into the interim role in February after former superintendent Jesus Jara resigned.
Reflecting on her career, Larsen-Mitchell described CCSD as more than a job, calling it her “home and passion for over half of my life.”
Search for a New Superintendent
The Clark County School Board initially planned to choose a new superintendent by October 30 but postponed the decision to March 27, 2025. Larsen-Mitchell's announcement comes as the district continues to finalize plans for the transition.
Community Reactions
Nichole Beer, a CCSD librarian, expressed disappointment over the announcement, praising Larsen-Mitchell as a strong advocate for the district’s libraries and librarians.
Focus on Unity and Progress
In her email, Larsen-Mitchell emphasized the importance of unity and a fresh start for the district. She expressed gratitude for the experiences and relationships she has formed over her decades-long tenure and pledged her continued support during the transition period.
🏒 Golden Knights’ Streak Ends in 6-3 Loss to Oilers
The Vegas Golden Knights saw their four-game winning streak come to an end in a 6-3 loss to the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday at Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta. Despite generating quality scoring opportunities and showing strong offensive energy, the Knights couldn’t overcome a tough second period and fell short in their rally.
Missed Chances Define the Game
The Knights (19-8-3) started the game with aggressive checking and quality chances, but 22 missed shot attempts and three shots hitting the post left them scoreless early. The Oilers (18-10-2), by contrast, were clinical, scoring four goals in the second period to take a commanding 5-0 lead.
The Knights battled back in the third period with goals from Victor Olofsson, Ivan Barbashev, and Brett Howden, narrowing the deficit to two. However, Edmonton forward Jeff Skinner scored just 38 seconds after Howden’s short-handed goal, halting the Knights’ momentum.
Defensive Lapses Prove Costly
Goaltender Adin Hill allowed six goals on 34 shots, marking his first regulation loss since Nov. 20. While Hill has been solid recently, the Knights’ defensive structure broke down, leaving openings for Edmonton’s stars. Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, who were held without points in the teams’ first two meetings, combined for a goal and four assists.
“We’ve been strong defensively for several games, but it just wasn’t there today,” said Barbashev, who scored his 15th goal of the season.
Tight Pacific Division Race
The Pacific Division remains highly competitive, with the Knights holding a narrow two-point lead over the Los Angeles Kings, who defeated the New York Rangers on Saturday. Meanwhile, the surging Oilers have climbed within three points of the division lead after sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference just a month ago.
Notable Milestone for Hanifin
Golden Knights defenseman Noah Hanifin reached 300 career NHL points with two assists in the loss. While Hanifin has faced challenges defensively this season, his offensive contributions were evident, including standout performances in both games against the Oilers this season.
Quick Turnaround for Vegas
The Knights won’t have much time to regroup as they face the NHL-leading Minnesota Wild on Sunday at 3 p.m. Minnesota forward Kirill Kaprizov, who scored twice in the Wild’s 4-1 win over Philadelphia on Saturday, will pose a significant challenge.
“We’ve got to get back to our game,” said Barbashev. “It’s a wake-up call, and we need to regroup and play better tomorrow.”
Key Takeaways
Division Dynamics: The Pacific Division remains tight, with the Knights unable to pull away from the Kings and Oilers.
Hanifin’s Offensive Contributions: Noah Hanifin’s two assists marked a significant milestone in his NHL career, showcasing his offensive abilities.
Back-to-Back Challenge: The Knights aim to rebound against Minnesota in their fifth back-to-back split of the season.

❎ ABC News Pays $15M to Settle Trump Defamation Lawsuit, Supports Presidential Library
ABC News has agreed to pay $15 million to support Donald Trump’s future presidential library as part of a settlement in a defamation lawsuit over inaccurate statements made by anchor George Stephanopoulos. The network will also pay $1 million in legal fees to Trump’s attorney, Alejandro Brito.
The lawsuit stemmed from a March 10 broadcast of “This Week,” during which Stephanopoulos incorrectly claimed that Trump had been found civilly liable for raping writer E. Jean Carroll. In reality, the verdicts in Carroll's lawsuits against Trump involved findings of sexual abuse and defamation, but not rape as defined under New York law.
Settlement Details
ABC News described its $15 million payment as a “charitable contribution” earmarked for a non-profit associated with Trump’s yet-to-be-built presidential library.
An editor’s note has been added to ABC’s website expressing regret over the inaccurate statements.
The settlement eliminates the need for Trump and Stephanopoulos to provide sworn depositions, which had been ordered by a judge.
The agreement was signed by representatives from both parties, including Trump, Stephanopoulos, and ABC News President Debra OConnell. ABC must transfer the settlement funds to an escrow account managed by Brito’s law firm within 10 days.
Background on the Case
The defamation lawsuit was filed in federal court in Miami shortly after the controversial segment aired. During an interview with Rep. Nancy Mace, Stephanopoulos repeatedly misstated the outcomes of Carroll’s lawsuits against Trump, alleging he was found liable for rape and for defaming the victim.
In truth, a jury in 2023 found Trump liable for sexually abusing Carroll and defaming her, awarding her $5 million in damages. A separate trial in 2024 resulted in an additional defamation ruling, ordering Trump to pay $83.3 million. Both verdicts are under appeal.
Cost Implications for the Library
While the $15 million settlement is significant, it represents only a fraction of the potential cost of Trump’s presidential library. For comparison, Barack Obama’s library in Chicago was estimated at $830 million in 2021.
This settlement marks a rare case where a defamation lawsuit directly benefits the construction of a presidential library, with the funds likely to support the project’s planning and development.
🗺 14 North Koreans Indicted in $88M Scheme to Fund Missile Programs
Fourteen North Korean nationals have been indicted for orchestrating a scheme that used IT workers posing under false identities to secure contracts with U.S. companies, funneling wages to fund North Korea’s weapons programs, including ballistic missile development.
Details of the Scheme
The operation, which generated over $88 million for the North Korean government, involved thousands of IT workers securing remote or freelance positions with U.S. companies. According to FBI Special Agent Ashley T. Johnson, these workers often used stolen identities or paid Americans to act as proxies in job interviews or provide access to home Wi-Fi networks.
Beyond earning wages, the workers also exploited companies by stealing sensitive information or demanding extortion payments under threats of leaking stolen data. Victims included individuals whose identities were stolen and businesses defrauded nationwide.
Indictments and Challenges
Filed Wednesday in U.S. District Court in St. Louis, the indictments charge all 14 individuals with wire fraud, money laundering, identity theft, and other offenses. Most of the suspects are believed to reside in North Korea, presenting significant challenges for law enforcement.
The U.S. Department of State is offering a $5 million reward for information leading to any of the suspects.
Broader Context of North Korean Cybercrime
This case is part of the Justice Department’s broader effort to expose and disrupt North Korea's criminal activities aimed at supporting its regime and nuclear weapons program.
In 2021, three North Korean military intelligence programmers were charged in a series of global cyberattacks designed to generate revenue for the regime.
In May 2022, the U.S. government issued warnings about North Koreans posing as non-North Korean nationals to gain employment.
Warnings for U.S. Businesses
Officials stress the importance of stringent hiring practices, particularly for fully remote IT positions. Johnson advised companies to regularly require remote workers to appear on camera to verify identities and reduce risks.
Seizures and Investigative Milestones
In October 2023, the FBI in St. Louis seized $1.5 million and 17 domain names tied to the scheme. The indictments announced this week mark the first criminal charges from this ongoing investigation.
Officials did not disclose the names of the U.S. companies that unknowingly hired North Korean workers but urged businesses to enhance their vetting processes.
💹 Congress Moves to Revise Social Security Rules, Senate Decision Looms
In November, the House of Representatives took rare bipartisan action, passing the Social Security Fairness Act by a decisive 327-75 vote. The bill aims to eliminate provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals receiving public pensions, a change that could impact around 2.8 million Americans.
The legislation seeks to remove the Windfall Elimination Provision (WEP) and Government Pension Offset (GPO), which lower benefits for public workers who also qualify for Social Security. While advocates celebrated the House victory, the bill must pass in the Senate before it can become law, and time is running out in the current legislative session.
Supporters Rally for Action in the Senate
Advocates, including firefighters, police officers, postal workers, teachers, and other government employees, gathered on Capitol Hill urging the Senate to act. The bill’s proponents argue that the WEP and GPO unfairly penalize public servants, reducing benefits by hundreds of dollars monthly for those who also paid into Social Security through second jobs.
Bette Marafino, a retired teacher and long-time advocate, described the emotional moment when the House passed the bill. However, she expressed concern about the bill’s fate if it does not pass the Senate before the December 20 deadline.
The Debate Over Repealing WEP and GPO
The WEP affects about 2.1 million Social Security beneficiaries by reducing retirement or disability benefits for individuals who also receive pensions from non-Social Security-covered jobs. Similarly, the GPO impacts approximately 746,000 people, reducing spousal or survivor benefits for those with government pensions.
These rules were originally designed to ensure equitable Social Security payouts, as the program provides progressive benefits based on contributions. Critics argue that repealing the WEP and GPO could allow some individuals to receive disproportionately high benefits.
The Congressional Budget Office estimates that eliminating the rules would cost $196 billion over the next decade, a significant expense as Social Security’s trust fund faces potential depletion by 2033.
Some experts suggest reforming the rules with more precise benefit adjustments rather than eliminating them outright. However, groups like the International Association of Fire Fighters argue that full repeal is the only fair solution, emphasizing the financial strain the provisions impose on public servants.
Public Workers Share Their Stories
Many public employees have faced unexpected financial hardships due to these rules. For example, retired teacher Roger Boudreau only discovered his Social Security benefits would be cut by 40% when he applied a decade ago, losing an estimated $5,000 annually. Similarly, Lois Carson, a Columbus City Schools employee, has delayed her retirement because of the reduction in survivor benefits she would face under the current system.
Advocates warn that without action, many public employees will need to work well beyond their planned retirement years.
Next Steps in the Senate
The Senate has 62 co-sponsors for the bill, giving it strong bipartisan support. Advocates have ramped up pressure, with thousands of emails sent urging a vote. However, the proposal competes with other legislative priorities, and if it doesn’t pass before the session ends, the process will need to start over in the next Congress.
With time running out, supporters are watching closely, hopeful that the Senate will act before the deadline.
