๐ค Program Helps Seniors Combat Loneliness During the Holiday Season
As the Christmas season approaches, many families and friends gather to celebrate the holidays. However, for some seniors without close family or a strong social network, this time of year can be particularly isolating and lonely. In response to this challenge, a special program is making a difference in the lives of seniors by offering companionship through meaningful connections with volunteers.
FOX5 learned about the Senior Companion Program, an initiative run by the Jewish Family Service Agency (JFSA). While rooted in Jewish values, the program welcomes and assists seniors of all faiths and backgrounds, providing emotional support and fostering connections that are often missing in their day-to-day lives.
How the Program Works
The Senior Companion Program matches volunteers with seniors to spend quality time together. These visits offer companionship and help combat the emotional toll of loneliness, especially during the holidays. Volunteers commit to regular visits, providing not just assistance but also friendship and shared experiences.
One such example is 86-year-old Charles Lobe, who participates in the program and receives weekly visits from his volunteer companion, Jacqueline Davis. The two share a bond that goes beyond simple conversation, and their time together is filled with joy, laughter, and meaningful activities.
Bringing Joy Through Shared Experiences
During FOX5โs visit to Lobeโs home, Davis and Lobe showcased one of their favorite activitiesโspending time together in the kitchen. On this particular day, the duo was busy baking blueberry muffins.
Lobeโs well-equipped kitchen provided everything they needed, as Davis playfully admired the array of tools and gadgets. Their interactions were filled with warmth and lighthearted moments, such as when Lobe misunderstood โvanilla extractโ for โvinegar,โ a mix-up that Davis jokingly attributed to her English accent.
Despite the small mishap, the two worked in harmony, turning their weekly visit into a cherished memory. For Davis, the experience is personally fulfilling, as it gives her the opportunity to help others while staying active and engaged.
For Lobe, these visits serve as a vital connection to the outside world. Unable to drive and often confined to his home, he values the companionship Davis provides.
โShe is my connection to the outside because I am stuck inside the house,โ Lobe said.
Stories of the Past Keep Memories Alive
While the muffins baked in the oven, Lobe took a moment to reminisce about his past, sharing stories and cherished keepsakes. He spoke fondly of his childhood, remembering when gasoline cost just 27 cents per gallon and bottles of Coke were 5 cents.
Lobeโs connection to his family history was evident as he proudly showed treasured items, including his fatherโs WWII identification card and a baby shoe belonging to his dadโprecious mementos that have stood the test of time.
He also recalled the Christmas traditions of his youth, where his family always had a live tree. Though today, a small tree sits on his mantle as a simpler version of those earlier celebrations, Lobe focuses on what truly mattersโhis connection with Davis and the companionship she provides.
โI like to see her, and I can talk. She is somewhat of my age, and we can communicate better,โ he shared.
The Importance of Companionship for Seniors
Loneliness among seniors is a growing issue, particularly during the holidays when family gatherings can amplify feelings of isolation. Volunteers like Jacqueline Davis play a critical role in the lives of seniors, offering not just friendship but also empathy and understanding.
Davis, like many volunteers in the program, recognizes the challenges seniors face, especially when family members are not nearby. By spending time with Lobe and others, she brings a sense of joy and comfort to those who might otherwise feel forgotten.
How to Get Involved
The Senior Companion Program also provides small stipends for volunteers, offering recognition for the time and energy they dedicate. For those interested in helping seniors or becoming a client, the program offers an opportunity to make a meaningful impact.
Through programs like these, seniors are reminded that they are not alone, and volunteers experience the reward of creating connections that brighten lives.
To learn more or sign up as a volunteer or client, visit the Jewish Family Service Agency website.
The Gift of Connection
The story of Charles Lobe and Jacqueline Davis highlights the profound difference that small acts of kindness and companionship can make. Programs like the Senior Companion Program are about more than just visitsโtheyโre about restoring joy, dignity, and a sense of belonging to seniors who need it most.
As the holiday season continues, these moments of connection serve as a reminder that community and compassion are the greatest gifts of all.
๐ Raiders' Season Hits New Low with 15-9 Loss to Falcons
The Las Vegas Raiders' struggles reached another dismal milestone on Monday night as they fell 15-9 to the Atlanta Falcons at Allegiant Stadium, marking their 10th consecutive loss. The defeat, broadcast nationally on โMonday Night Football,โ highlighted the Raiders' ongoing ineptitude as they dropped to 2-12 for the season.
An Abysmal Performance
The Raiders' effort was riddled with mistakes, poor execution, and questionable decisions that underscored their inability to compete effectively. From costly penalties to disastrous special teams play, the team consistently sabotaged its chances. A critical safety in the second quarter occurred after two consecutive runs up the middle, further illustrating their offensive struggles.
Mismanagement extended to special teams, where issues included a blocked extra point while only 10 players were on the field, along with a punt that failed to get off cleanly. Penaltiesโfalse starts, holding calls, and a roughing-the-passer flag late in the gameโsealed the teamโs fate, negating any chance of a comeback.
Quarterback Woes Continue
Desmond Ridder became the third starting quarterback for the Raiders this season, but his performance was largely ineffective until a brief flurry of drives late in the fourth quarter. Offensive inconsistency continues to plague the team, leaving the quarterback situation in even greater disarray as the season winds down.
Historical Context
Once dominant on โMonday Night Football,โ the Raiders have fallen far from their glory days. From 1970 to 1990, the team posted an impressive 29-6-1 record on Monday nights, including 14 consecutive wins during their peak. This season, however, the Raiders have lost four of their last five Monday night appearances, with Mondayโs performance among the worst.
Silver Lining: Draft Position
For a franchise mired in a seemingly endless rebuild, the loss further solidifies hopes for a top pick in the NFL draft. Securing the No. 1 overall selection could allow the Raiders to pursue a franchise quarterback and address their glaring deficiencies under center.
Coaching and the Bigger Picture
Antonio Pierce, in his first season as the full-time head coach, continues to oversee a team that looks no better than it did under former coach Josh McDaniels, who was dismissed earlier this year. Injuries have been a factor, but the lack of execution across all three phases of the game points to deeper issues.
The teamโs resilience has been highlighted as a positive, but with repeated mistakes and breakdowns, their efforts have not translated to victories. Special teams failures, ill-timed penalties, and missed opportunities have become defining features of this Raiders season.
Where Things Stand
At 2-12, the Raiders' problems extend beyond the win-loss record. Mondayโs loss raised more questions about the teamโs direction and whether meaningful improvement is possible in the near future. With just a few games remaining, the focus will likely shift to the draft and the search for a long-term solution at quarterback.
For Raiders fans, hope lies in the opportunity to rebuildโbut after Mondayโs performance, even optimism feels hard to muster. The season continues to be a painful reminder of how far the franchise has fallen.

โ Trump Holds First Press Conference Since Election Victory, Outlines Policy Priorities and Threatens Legal Action
President-elect Donald Trump held a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago club, marking his first major public appearance since securing a second term. During the session, Trump addressed several key issues, including pardons, border wall disputes, vaccines, drone sightings, and U.S. troop deployments.
Border Wall Dispute and Legal Threats
Trump criticized the Biden administrationโs sale of unused border wall materials, promising potential legal action. While Congress mandated the disposal of unused sections under the National Defense Authorization Act, Trump argued that such sales hinder efforts to secure the southern border. Most of the materials have already been transferred to federal agencies and state governments, with some auctioned off to private buyers.
Eric Adams Pardon Consideration
Trump indicated he would consider pardoning New York Mayor Eric Adams, who faces federal fraud and corruption charges. Adams has been accused of accepting luxury travel perks and illegal campaign contributions from foreign nationals but maintains his innocence while continuing to fight the charges.
Vaccines and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.โs Role
Amid concerns over Trumpโs selection of Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a known vaccine skeptic, to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Trump reassured the public about the safety of established vaccines, particularly the polio vaccine. However, he left open questions regarding long-debunked theories linking vaccines to autism.
Drone Sightings and Conspiracy Claims
Trump addressed growing speculation surrounding mysterious drone sightings over New Jersey and the eastern U.S. Without offering evidence, he suggested the government and military are aware of the situation but have not disclosed details to the public. The White House later stated the sightings involved a mix of commercial, law enforcement, and hobbyist drones, along with other aerial objects.
Syria and Middle East Policy
On U.S. military involvement in Syria, Trump said he would consider withdrawing the 900 American troops currently stationed there, emphasizing concerns over troop safety and the risks of further conflict.
Economic Investments and Transition Progress
Trump used the platform to highlight economic progress during his transition period, including recent talks with business leaders such as Apple CEO Tim Cook and pharmaceutical executives. He also touted SoftBank Groupโs announcement of a $100 billion investment in U.S. projects over the next four years, calling it a major economic victory.
Trump emphasized that this transition has been smoother compared to his first term, attributing the difference to broad support and extensive meetings with over 100 world leaders. He declined to confirm whether Russian President Vladimir Putin was among them.
Key Themes of the Press Conference
Border Policy: Criticism of the Biden administrationโs handling of unused border wall materials and potential legal action.
Legal Matters: Willingness to consider a pardon for Mayor Eric Adams amid corruption charges.
Vaccines: Assurances that established vaccines like the polio vaccine will remain widely available.
Drone Sightings: Suggestions of government knowledge regarding ongoing drone activity.
Foreign Policy: Discussion of troop withdrawals in Syria and Middle East strategy.
Economic Deals: Promoting investments and economic negotiations as a sign of a productive transition.
Trump concluded the session by framing his second term as a period of significant progress and global optimism, signaling a shift toward building new alliances and implementing his policies ahead of his formal return to office.
๐บ Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau Faces Crisis After Finance Minister Resigns
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau faces a significant political challenge following the resignation of Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland, one of his most prominent and loyal cabinet members. Freeland, who also served as deputy prime minister, stepped down after Trudeau decided to remove her from the finance portfolio, offering her a lesser cabinet role instead.
The move comes as Trudeauโs administration grapples with falling popularity amid economic concerns and growing political pressure to address incoming U.S. President-elect Donald Trumpโs trade and border policies.
Resignation Highlights Cabinet Disagreements
Freelandโs departure follows disagreements with Trudeau over recent economic measures, including a temporary sales tax holiday and $175 checks for Canadians. Freeland expressed concern that Canada must prepare for potential economic challenges, particularly Trump's proposed 25% tariffs on Canadian imports, by avoiding unnecessary spending.
Freelandโs decision to resign instead of accepting a reduced role underscores internal divisions within Trudeauโs Liberal Party. Her departure marks a substantial setback for Trudeauโs leadership, as she was a key figure in Canadaโs economic policies and U.S. relations.
Trudeauโs Swift Replacement and Political Fallout
Trudeau appointed Dominic LeBlanc, the current public safety minister and a close ally, as the new finance minister. LeBlanc, who recently joined Trudeau at a dinner with Trump in Mar-a-Lago, will now take on the task of addressing economic issues, cost-of-living pressures, and navigating tense Canada-U.S. relations.
The resignation has fueled calls for Trudeau to step down. Opposition leader Jagmeet Singh of the New Democratic Party (NDP), whose support keeps Trudeauโs minority government in power, called for his resignation. Meanwhile, the main opposition Conservative Party stopped short of demanding Trudeauโs resignation but continues to push for an election.
Trudeauโs Liberal Party remains divided on his leadership. While Trudeau has insisted he plans to lead the party into the next election, some lawmakers have publicly expressed their desire for new leadership, citing growing dissatisfaction among Canadians.
Challenges Ahead for Trudeau
Freelandโs resignation coincides with increasing economic uncertainty. Canada faces a larger-than-expected deficit, and Trumpโs threats to impose significant tariffs remain a major concern. Freeland had chaired a cabinet committee on U.S. relations and was expected to play a key role in developing border security measures to address Trumpโs demands.
Trudeauโs government now faces the risk of losing its parliamentary support. The NDP has hinted at reassessing its position, which could lead to a snap election.
Trudeauโs Legacy and Future Prospects
Trudeau, who came to power in 2015 with a platform of progressive policies, now faces disillusionment among Canadians. Economic concerns, rising costs of living, and immigration challenges have eroded support for his leadership. Trudeauโs legacy includes legalizing cannabis, implementing a carbon tax, and embracing immigration policies, but these achievements are now overshadowed by domestic frustrations.
The prime ministerโs efforts to recruit Mark Carney, former head of the Bank of Canada and Bank of England, to join his cabinet appear unsuccessful for now, as LeBlancโs appointment solidifies the current leadership lineup.
With his government dependent on the NDPโs support, Trudeauโs political survival hinges on maintaining parliamentary alliances while addressing growing internal and external challenges.
Key Takeaways
Freeland Resignation: Chrystia Freeland resigned after Trudeau removed her from the finance minister role, signaling deep cabinet divisions.
LeBlanc Appointed: Dominic LeBlanc replaces Freeland, tasked with managing Canadaโs economy and relations with the U.S. under Trump.
Leadership Pressure: Trudeau faces calls to resign amid plummeting popularity and rising opposition within his party.
Economic Concerns: Trumpโs proposed tariffs and Canadaโs growing deficit add to Trudeauโs challenges as the next federal election looms.
๐ฐ El Cortez Casino Unveils $20 Million Expansion with New Bars, Dining, and Gaming
El Cortez Casino in downtown Las Vegas is set to complete a $20 million expansion by early February, introducing a mix of modern features while preserving its historic charm. The project adds 10,000 square feet to the property, featuring new entertainment spaces, dining options, and gaming areas.
As part of the upgrades, a Roulette Bar with a ceiling-mounted replica roulette wheel will welcome visitors entering the new section from the existing casino floor. The expanded area will offer eight table games with 24-hour action and around 200 slot machines.
A second venue, the Show Bar, will cater to live entertainment, equipped with a stage and a 12-foot-by-10-foot screen for showcasing sports, movies, and vintage Las Vegas visuals. The project also includes a high-limit slot area with 43 machines, designed for premium gamblers seeking a more exclusive experience.
Dining options have expanded as well, with the addition of Hot Noods, a 44-seat noodle restaurant created by the team behind Chinglish.
The upgrades reflect El Cortez's response to its changing customer base. The casino has remained a favorite for visitors seeking a classic "old Vegas" experience, but the enhancements are designed to attract younger guests who frequent the Fremont East district for nightlife.
To maintain El Cortezโs historic connection, the expansion integrates design elements from the original 1941 building, including seamless connections to the existing structure. New features such as higher ceilings and large windows bring in natural light and offer views of Fremont Street, bridging the gap between nostalgia and modern luxury.
The construction process presented challenges as the work required integrating new spaces with buildings constructed decades apart. Crews carefully navigated these complexities to ensure that the casino floor and other guest operations remained open throughout the project.
This expansion follows a $30 million renovation completed in recent years, which included updates to the original 47 rooms, premium tower accommodations, high-limit rooms, and casino bathrooms. Earlier this year, a Starbucks was also added to the north lobby, further enhancing guest amenities.
With this latest round of improvements, El Cortez Casino aims to appeal to a broader demographic, offering new attractions while remaining a celebrated fixture of Las Vegas history. The upgrades blend modern entertainment, gaming, and dining experiences with the authenticity that has defined the property for decades.
Key Features of the Expansion
10,000-square-foot addition
Roulette Bar with a replica roulette wheel centerpiece
Show Bar with live entertainment and large screen for multimedia displays
High-limit slot area with 43 machines
Hot Noods: New 44-seat noodle restaurant
Expanded gaming floor with table games and slot machines
Integration of historic design elements from the original 1941 structure
