⌛ Twenty-Five Years Later: A Look Back at Las Vegas and the Y2K Frenzy

Twenty-five years ago, Las Vegas found itself teetering between apocalyptic fears and ambitious dreams of hosting the biggest party the city had ever seen. The dawn of the new millennium brought with it a mix of hysteria over the so-called "Y2K bug" and sky-high expectations for a once-in-a-lifetime New Year’s Eve celebration. While some braced for the end of the world, others readied themselves for a night of excess, luxury, and revelry.
Y2K Fears and Precautions
In the late 1990s, fears surrounding the "millennium bug" ran rampant. The concern? Computers worldwide, programmed to read years using just the last two digits, might interpret "00" as 1900 rather than 2000, causing widespread chaos. Predictions ranged from planes falling out of the sky to bank accounts being wiped clean.
Las Vegas prepared for the worst. The Nevada Department of Prisons had already upgraded to a four-digit year system as early as 1987. State and local governments began tackling the issue in 1995. By late 1999, the federal government had spent an estimated $100 billion on Y2K compliance measures.
Locally, reservoirs were stocked with one billion gallons of water, enough for four to five days of drinking supply. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints grounded missionaries from traveling between Dec. 30 and Jan. 5. Even Cheetahs, a popular gentlemen’s club, chose to close early on New Year’s Eve, citing concerns over potential chaos.
Casinos Bet Big—and Misjudged Demand
While government agencies worked to prevent catastrophe, Las Vegas’ hospitality industry saw the millennium as a golden opportunity to rake in unprecedented profits. Room rates and ticket prices soared, as casino executives assumed the city would be the top destination for New Year’s Eve.
Caesars Palace charged $2,000 per night with a four-night minimum.
Bellagio set rates at $2,000 per night for a three-night stay.
Circus Circus asked for $450 a night, and Texas Station shocked customers with $750 per night for three nights.
Concert prices were equally extravagant. Barbra Streisand’s Dec. 31 show at the MGM Grand had tickets priced between $500 and $2,500. Other notable acts included Bette Midler at Mandalay Bay ($95–$500) and Rod Stewart at the Rio ($400–$1,000). Fremont Street Experience charged $100 per person, a stark contrast to the $10 tickets offered the previous year.
The sticker shock proved too much for many potential visitors. By mid-December, ticket sales lagged for all but the most exclusive events. Caesars Palace ended up comping 80% of its rooms to gamblers, while Bellagio gave away 70% of its inventory. Texas Station’s $750-per-night deal was slashed to $399 for all three nights combined.
A Smaller-than-Expected Crowd
Initial projections estimated up to one million visitors would descend on Las Vegas to ring in the new millennium. By October, that figure had been revised to 275,000. In reality, around 240,000 visitors came to Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve 1999, and the city’s hotel occupancy rate stood at 85%—well below the near-capacity levels expected.
Compounding the issue was the lack of outdoor festivities. Concerned about attracting underage crowds, city officials decided against hosting fireworks or live entertainment on the Strip. This left the "entertainment capital of the world" without a signature event to showcase to global audiences.
A Quiet New Year’s Eve
Despite the build-up, the night itself passed with little incident. The feared Y2K disruptions failed to materialize, with Clark County reporting only minor computer glitches that were resolved the next morning. The only reported power outage was caused by a foil balloon hitting a substation, briefly cutting electricity to The Mirage and nearby hotels.
Sadly, the night was marred by a tragedy when a Stanford University assistant wrestling coach, Tod Surmon, died after climbing a light pole near Paris Las Vegas. Authorities reported he was electrocuted and fell 30 feet to the ground.
Attendance on Fremont Street was particularly disappointing, with only 10,000 revelers showing up, compared to 50,000 the previous year.
Lessons Learned
The underwhelming New Year’s Eve 1999 celebration marked a turning point for Las Vegas. The city realized it had miscalculated demand and failed to capitalize on the historic moment.
By Dec. 31, 2000, Las Vegas hosted its first $500,000 fireworks display. The following year, "America’s Party" was born, turning New Year’s Eve into one of the city’s signature events. Today, Las Vegas is a global destination for ringing in the New Year, with extravagant fireworks, live entertainment, and a citywide celebration that draws hundreds of thousands of visitors annually.
What started as a misstep ultimately became a valuable lesson, solidifying Las Vegas’ reputation as the place to be when the clock strikes midnight.

🏒 Cassidy Becomes Winningest Coach in Golden Knights History in 3-1 Victory Over Ducks

Bruce Cassidy solidified his place in Golden Knights history with a 3-1 win over the Anaheim Ducks at T-Mobile Arena on Monday night. The victory made Cassidy the franchise’s all-time winningest coach, surpassing Gerard Gallant with a record of 119-59-20 in just under three seasons.
The milestone highlights Cassidy's impressive tenure since joining the Golden Knights over two years ago, including leading the team to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2023. The coach, known for his high standards and focus on team success, remains committed to building on this foundation.
Three Takeaways from the Game
1. Strong Goaltending and Special Teams Shine
The Knights capitalized on an early special teams opportunity, with Tanner Pearson scoring a short-handed goal late in the first period. Goaltender Adin Hill was also crucial, making 31 saves and keeping the Ducks at bay as the Knights held the lead through much of the game. The team’s penalty kill stepped up after a first-period interference penalty on Tanner Laczynski, ensuring no momentum shift for the Ducks.
2. Keegan Kolesar Continues Breakout Season
Keegan Kolesar's strong performance was pivotal. The 27-year-old forward notched a goal and an assist, setting new career highs with nine goals this season and 15 total points. Kolesar’s increased offensive production has earned him time on the second line alongside Tomas Hertl and William Karlsson, elevating his role from a traditional fourth-line grinder.
3. Hertl’s Big Moment Ahead of Sharks Reunion
Tomas Hertl's game-winning goal in the third period added to his growing contributions to the team. Hertl’s tally was his 10th of the season, and his performance comes just days before he faces his former team, the San Jose Sharks, in a reunion game on Friday. Having spent nearly a decade with the Sharks, the matchup will mark an emotional return for the two-time All-Star.
Golden Knights Maintain Pacific Division Lead
The win, the Knights’ eighth in their last nine games, extended their lead atop the Pacific Division to five points heading into a three-day holiday break. Despite injuries and challenges throughout the season, the team remains one of the Western Conference’s top contenders.
With two games in hand, the Knights are just two points behind the Winnipeg Jets for the best record in the Western Conference. After the break, they’ll head to San Jose for their next matchup on Friday.
Bruce Cassidy’s Historic Achievement
Cassidy, who came to the Golden Knights after a successful stint with the Boston Bruins, has established himself as one of the NHL’s top coaches. He now holds 400 career NHL wins, adding to his growing legacy. Under his leadership, the Golden Knights have maintained their consistency despite injuries, building a culture of accountability and high expectations.
While Cassidy acknowledges the personal accomplishment, his focus remains on the team’s goals, including chasing another Stanley Cup.
“It’s a nice milestone, but we’ve got to keep building,” Cassidy said. “The work we’ve done here is something to be proud of, but there’s more to achieve.”

❎ Trump at AmericaFest: TikTok May Stay, But Security Issues Loom

President-elect Donald Trump addressed a crowd of enthusiastic conservative supporters at Turning Point USA’s AmericaFest 2024 on Sunday, hinting at a possible shift in his stance on TikTok. Speaking at the annual event in Phoenix, Trump acknowledged the app's widespread popularity while suggesting its potential risks, leaving open the question of what policies his administration might pursue once he takes office.
Trump, who has previously called for TikTok to be banned in the United States due to concerns over its ties to the Chinese government, struck a more ambiguous tone during his speech. While still skeptical of the app’s security implications, he hinted that his administration might consider allowing the app to continue operating under certain conditions.
“Maybe we got to keep this sucker around for a little while,” Trump told the crowd, prompting both laughter and applause. The statement marked a departure from his previous hardline stance during his first term, when he signed executive orders attempting to ban TikTok unless its U.S. operations were sold to an American company. Those efforts were later halted by court rulings and changes under the Biden administration.
TikTok's Popularity and Security Concerns
TikTok, the short-form video app owned by the Chinese company ByteDance, has become a cultural phenomenon in the United States, especially among younger users. It boasts more than 150 million U.S. users and has established itself as a major platform for entertainment, creativity, and even political engagement.
However, national security concerns surrounding TikTok have persisted. Critics argue that the app could collect user data that might be accessible to the Chinese government, potentially posing a threat to U.S. security. These concerns have led to calls for greater scrutiny of the app and even bipartisan efforts in Congress to regulate or ban it.
Trump's comments come as his incoming administration prepares to revisit the issue. Reports suggest that his team is exploring options, including forcing ByteDance to divest its U.S. operations or imposing stricter regulations on the app's data practices. Trump himself has indicated that any decision would need to balance security concerns with the app's cultural and economic impact.
Mixed Reactions
Trump's remarks at AmericaFest sparked a range of reactions from the audience and online commentators. Supporters praised his openness to reconsidering the app's role in the U.S., while critics called for a firmer stance against what they see as a national security threat.
At the same time, some conservatives at the event highlighted TikTok's value as a tool for reaching younger audiences, particularly in political campaigns. Many Republican lawmakers and candidates have increasingly used the platform to connect with voters, despite the concerns over its ownership.
Future of TikTok in the U.S.
As Trump prepares to take office in January, the future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain. While his comments suggest a willingness to allow the app to operate under certain conditions, his administration will likely face pressure from lawmakers and security experts to take decisive action.
TikTok has repeatedly denied allegations of improper data sharing with the Chinese government, emphasizing its commitment to user privacy and security. The company has also proposed measures to address concerns, including storing U.S. user data on American servers and increasing transparency in its operations.
For now, TikTok's millions of U.S. users will have to wait and see how Trump's administration plans to approach the issue. Whether the app faces new restrictions or finds a way to coexist under stricter oversight, it is clear that TikTok's role in American culture and politics will remain a topic of debate.
Key Takeaways
Trump hinted at a more flexible stance on TikTok during his speech at AmericaFest 2024, leaving open the possibility of allowing the app to remain operational.
National security concerns surrounding TikTok's ties to China continue to drive calls for regulation or a potential ban.
The incoming Trump administration is expected to revisit the issue and consider various options for addressing these concerns.
TikTok's popularity as a cultural and political platform complicates efforts to impose restrictions.
The app's future in the U.S. will depend on how Trump balances security concerns with its economic and cultural impact.

💹 Missed Covid Stimulus? IRS to Issue $2.4 Billion in Recovery Payments

The IRS is preparing to distribute automatic "special payments" of up to $1,400 to one million taxpayers who missed out on previous Covid-19 stimulus checks. These payments, totaling an estimated $2.4 billion, aim to resolve gaps for eligible individuals who did not claim the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit.
Who Will Receive the Payments?
The payments are designated for individuals who filed 2021 tax returns but failed to claim the Recovery Rebate Credit, which was designed to compensate those who didn’t receive their full economic impact payments during the pandemic. Many eligible taxpayers mistakenly left the credit field blank or entered $0 on their returns.
How Will the Payments Be Delivered?
Direct Deposit: Payments will be sent automatically to bank accounts on file with the IRS.
Paper Checks: If a taxpayer's bank account has changed since filing, the IRS will reissue the payment via a paper check to the mailing address on record.
Notification Letter: Taxpayers will receive a separate letter confirming their payment.
The IRS expects most recipients to have their payments by late January. No further action is required for eligible taxpayers to receive the funds.
Who Qualifies for the Payments?
Taxpayers eligible for the 2021 Recovery Rebate Credit who failed to claim it on their 2021 tax returns.
Those who meet income and eligibility requirements but missed or did not report the credit on their original returns.
Individuals who haven’t yet filed their 2021 tax returns still have until April 15, 2025, to claim the credit and any associated refunds.
How the Payments Affect Benefits
Claiming the Recovery Rebate Credit does not count as income and will not affect eligibility for federal benefits like:
Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
Commissioner’s Statement
IRS Commissioner Danny Werfel acknowledged that many eligible taxpayers overlooked the credit due to its complexity. To simplify the process, the IRS is issuing the payments automatically, sparing taxpayers the hassle of filing an amended return.
For further information on payment eligibility and amounts, taxpayers are encouraged to visit the IRS website.
