šŸ›£ Las Vegas Prepares for New Yearā€™s Eve 2025: What You Need to Know About Road Closures and Traffic

As Las Vegas gears up to ring in 2025, hundreds of thousands of revelers are expected to flood the cityā€™s iconic resort corridor, creating a vibrant yet challenging environment for traffic management. The centerpiece of the celebration will take place on the Strip, where the cityā€™s largest crowd will gather to enjoy the festive atmosphere and an elaborate eight-minute firework show. The display will feature pyrotechnics launched from the rooftops of nine major resorts, lighting up the sky at the stroke of midnight on Wednesday.

Road Closures on the Strip

To accommodate the massive influx of partygoers, the Strip will be closed to vehicle traffic between Spring Mountain Road and Reno Avenue, located just south of Tropicana Avenue. The closure process will begin at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday when officials start blocking off sections of Las Vegas Boulevard. By 8 p.m., a complete shutdown of this portion of the Strip will be in place, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

For drivers, this means significant traffic restrictions. Interstate 15 off-ramps at Tropicana Avenue and Flamingo Road will close at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, as crews prepare the area for the celebrations. However, the off-ramps at Russell Road and Spring Mountain Road will remain open, offering limited access around the cityā€™s bustling entertainment hub.

Post-Firework Cleanup and Reopening Timeline

Once the fireworks have dazzled the crowd and celebrations begin to wind down, cleanup crews will swing into action. By 12:45 a.m., workers will begin blowing trash from medians onto the roadways. Street sweepers will then follow to clear debris, ensuring the area is ready to reopen by morning.

Clark County spokesperson Stacey Welling noted that if all goes according to plan, Las Vegas Boulevard is typically fully reopened by 6 a.m. Wednesday. The process involves crews working their way northward, reopening intersections and allowing traffic to return to the Strip one mile at a time.

RTC Free Bus Service for New Yearā€™s Eve

For those planning to join the festivities, the Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) will provide free bus rides from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 9 a.m. Wednesday. This initiative offers a safe and convenient transportation option for attendees, particularly for those who intend to consume alcohol during their celebrations.

While RTC bus routes will experience delays due to the Strip closure, the free rides aim to alleviate the need for personal vehicles and promote safety during the busy night. On New Yearā€™s Day, RTC buses will operate on a Sunday schedule throughout the Las Vegas Valley.

Tips for Navigating the Celebrations

  • Plan Ahead: If youā€™re attending the celebrations, leave early to account for road closures and potential delays.

  • Use Public Transit: Take advantage of RTCā€™s free bus service to avoid the hassle of parking and navigating restricted areas.

  • Stay Safe: If you plan to drink, make arrangements for a designated driver, rideshare, or use RTC services.

  • Be Patient: Expect delays as crews work to clear the streets and reopen the Strip post-celebration.

With the combination of dazzling fireworks, energetic crowds, and city-wide festivities, New Yearā€™s Eve in Las Vegas promises to be an unforgettable experience. Whether youā€™re partying on the Strip or enjoying the celebrations from nearby, planning ahead will ensure a smooth and enjoyable night.

šŸ’ UNLVā€™s Club Hockey Team Topples Division I Giants Denver in Unforgettable Match

NLVā€™s club hockey program delivered a monumental upset Saturday night, defeating the defending Division I national champions, the University of Denver Pioneers, 7-6 in a nail-biting shootout at Magness Arena. This victory marked a historic milestone for the Rebels, as it was their first-ever win over a Division I program, even though the game was classified as an exhibition match because UNLV is not officially a Division I team.

The Rebels (16-3-1 ACHA) showcased an extraordinary effort, building an impressive 5-1 lead after two periods. Despite being heavily outshot 39-12 during that span, UNLV goaltender Jeremy Forman stood tall, delivering one of the finest performances of his career. Forman's heroics in the net gave the Rebels a chance to capitalize on their scoring opportunities, and they did not disappoint. Preston Brodziak led the offensive charge with two goals, while several teammates stepped up to contribute crucial plays.

Denver, ranked No. 5 in the most recent USCHO rankings, stormed back in the third period with a relentless attack. The Pioneers tied the game 6-6 with just 3:23 remaining in regulation, outshooting UNLV by a staggering 64-17 by the end of the night. However, the Rebels kept their composure and pushed the game to a dramatic shootout.

Team captain Mattias Dal Monte emerged as the hero in the shootout, confidently scoring the game-winner to seal the Rebels' historic victory. The moment was a testament to the determination and resilience of the UNLV squad, which continues to gain recognition for its competitive spirit and skill.

ā€œItā€™s an incredible feeling,ā€ Dal Monte said after the game. ā€œWe know the odds were against us, but we believed in ourselves, stuck to our game plan, and Jeremy (Forman) was unbelievable tonight.ā€

The upset victory sends a strong message about the rising competitiveness of UNLVā€™s club hockey program and its potential to compete with top-tier teams. It also shines a spotlight on the talent and dedication within the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA), which often goes underappreciated compared to NCAA Division I hockey.

The Rebels arenā€™t resting on their laurels. They face another challenging exhibition matchup against No. 8-ranked Colorado College (10-5-1) on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Colorado Springs. The game will be streamed live on NCHC.tv, offering another opportunity for UNLV to prove itself on a larger stage.

As UNLV continues its journey, the hockey community is taking notice of this underdog story that underscores the passion and unpredictability of the sport.

šŸŽ° Roulette in Nevada: Record-Breaking Bets and the Gameā€™s Thrilling Appeal

Roulette, one of the most iconic and thrilling casino table games, captivates players with its spinning wheel, rolling ball, and the electrifying clatter as the ball settles into a numbered pocket. In Nevada, roulette is the second-most popular table game by unit count and the third-most wagered table game in terms of total money placed.

Despite its appeal, roulette is a lucrative game for casinos, with an average house win percentage ranging from 17% to 23% over the years. While games like blackjack, craps, and baccarat offer players better odds, roulette continues to attract a broad audience due to its simplicity and the variety of betting options available.

However, savvy players remain cautious about game variations that tilt the odds in the house's favor. For instance, while single-zero wheels offer a lower house edge, double-zero and triple-zero wheels significantly increase the casino's advantage. These wheel types are particularly common in Las Vegas, although some venues, like the Monte Carlo hotel-casino (now Park MGM), have occasionally offered single-zero roulette to replicate the European gaming experience.

In 2023, Nevadaā€™s Gaming Control Board reported 432 roulette tables in operation statewide. Players wagered a record-breaking $2.35 billion on roulette that year, with casinos earning $460.3 million in winnings, reflecting a 19.6% hold percentage. This marked the largest amount wagered on the game in Nevadaā€™s history, despite the peak table count of 469 in 2010. The highest hold percentage of 23.7% was recorded in 2002.

Playing roulette is straightforward. Each table is equipped with a spinning wheel and a layout of numbers corresponding to the wheel. Players are assigned unique chip colors to keep track of their bets. The wheel typically features 37 to 39 pockets, depending on the presence of zero, double-zero, and sometimes triple-zero pockets. Pockets are color-coded: green for zeroes, red or black for the numbered slots, with patterns alternating by odd and even numbers.

Bets range from single-number wagers with a payout of 35:1 to broader bets like even/odd or red/black, which pay 1:1. Players can also bet on rows, columns, and number groups with varying odds. Once the ball is spun, the croupier announces ā€œno more betsā€ and waits for the ball to land in a pocket. Winning bets are marked and paid, while losing bets are collected.

Rouletteā€™s enduring appeal lies in its blend of simplicity, variety, and the thrill of chance. While most Las Vegas roulette games feature double-zero or triple-zero wheels, the legacy of single-zero roulette persists, drawing players who seek a more favorable edge.

āœˆ Las Vegas Travel Hack: Save Money on Flights by Skipping Online Booking

Many budget airlines operating in and out of Las Vegas impose extra fees when flights are booked online. These fees, often unnoticed by travelers until checkout, can significantly increase the total cost of a trip. However, a little-known tip can help savvy travelers bypass these charges entirely: purchasing tickets in person at the airlineā€™s ticket counter at Harry Reid International Airport.

By simply visiting the ticket counter and providing an ID, destination, and travel dates, travelers can save as much as $50 on round-trip flights. While the savings can add up quickly, there are limitations to this method, such as restricted ticket counter hours for some airlines and the need to make a special trip to the airport.

For those willing to make the effort, hereā€™s an overview of the booking fees charged by several popular budget airlines and how to avoid them:

Sun Country Airlines

Sun Country Airlines includes a fee known as the ā€œPassenger Interface Chargeā€ for bookings made online or through their call center. This fee, introduced in 2022, adds $22 per passenger per flight segment.

For example, a nonstop flight from Las Vegas to Chicago is considered one segment, while a flight with a stopover in another city counts as two segments. For a single round-trip ticket, this could result in an extra $44 in fees. Families traveling together or individuals booking multi-segment trips may see these charges balloon to nearly $200.

By booking directly at the airport, these fees are waived, offering a substantial savings opportunity for cost-conscious travelers.

Allegiant Air

Allegiant Air applies an ā€œElectronic Carrier Usage Chargeā€ of $22 per passenger per flight segment for online reservations. This fee is consistent with Sun Countryā€™s pricing model, and like Sun Country, it is waived for tickets purchased at the airlineā€™s ticket counter.

Allegiantā€™s approach to ticket sales is unique; it does not partner with third-party platforms such as Expedia or Travelocity. This strategy ensures that customers must visit Allegiantā€™s website for the most up-to-date fares, routes, and schedules. However, travelers who are willing to visit the airport in person can avoid these extra fees entirely.

Frontier Airlines

Frontier Airlines charges a ā€œCarrier Interface Chargeā€ that can go as high as $23 per passenger per flight segment. This fee applies to both standard fares and Discount Den fares, Frontierā€™s annual membership program. Like other airlines, Frontier waives this fee for tickets purchased at the airport, making in-person bookings a cost-effective alternative.

Spirit Airlines

Spirit Airlines imposes a ā€œPassenger Usage Chargeā€ that ranges from $3.99 to $22.99 per trip segment. The fee is applied to bookings made online, at international airports, or through the airlineā€™s reservation centers.

By purchasing tickets at the airport, travelers can avoid these fees and save money on Spirit flights. This can be particularly beneficial for travelers taking multi-segment trips, as the fees accumulate with each segment.

Breeze Airways

Breeze Airways includes a ā€œTechnology Development Chargeā€ for bookings made online. This fee is waived for tickets purchased at the airport, but Breezeā€™s counter hours are limited. For instance, at Harry Reid International Airport, Breeze tickets can only be purchased on Tuesdays from 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. PT. While the savings can be significant, the limited availability makes this option less convenient for some travelers.

Why These Fees Exist

These fees, often given names like ā€œPassenger Interface Chargeā€ or ā€œTechnology Development Charge,ā€ are designed to offset the costs associated with maintaining online booking systems and call centers. For budget airlines, keeping fares low often means passing these costs directly to the consumer in the form of booking fees.

Federal regulations enforced by the U.S. Department of Transportation require airlines to provide an option for travelers to avoid these fees. This is why booking in person remains a viable alternative for budget-conscious flyers.

How to Save on Booking Fees

  1. Visit the Ticket Counter: Airlines waive booking fees for tickets purchased at the airport. Ensure you bring a valid ID, your destination, and travel dates.

  2. Plan Ahead: Check the airlineā€™s counter hours, as some counters, like Breeze Airways, have very limited availability.

  3. Compare Costs: While in-person bookings can save money on fees, factor in the cost of transportation to the airport and any potential parking fees to determine if the savings are worthwhile.

  4. Be Flexible: If youā€™re booking for multiple travelers or have a multi-segment trip, the savings can quickly add up, making in-person purchases more attractive.

Example Savings Scenarios

  • Solo Traveler: A single round-trip ticket with one layover each way could incur $88 in fees if booked online. By booking at the airport, the traveler avoids this cost entirely.

  • Family of Four: A family traveling on nonstop round-trip flights could face nearly $200 in booking fees online. An in-person booking waives these charges, providing significant savings.

  • Frequent Flyers: For those who travel often, avoiding booking fees on multiple trips throughout the year can save hundreds of dollars.

Final Thoughts

While budget airlines offer competitive fares, online booking fees can quickly inflate the cost of a trip. By booking in person at Harry Reid International Airport or other airline counters, travelers can avoid these charges and maximize their savings. Though this method requires extra effort, the financial benefits often outweigh the inconvenience, especially for families and frequent travelers.

For those planning their next trip, this simple strategy can make a big difference in keeping travel expenses under control.
