🏒 Golden Knights’ Winning Streak Snapped in 3-2 Loss to Canadiens

The Vegas Golden Knights saw their six-game winning streak end Tuesday night in a 3-2 loss to the Montreal Canadiens at T-Mobile Arena. Despite controlling play for much of the game, self-inflicted errors allowed Montreal to rally from a 2-0 deficit and claim the victory.
Montreal’s Comeback
The Knights built a strong start with first-period goals from defensemen Zach Whitecloud and Noah Hanifin. They continued pressuring in the second period, including three quality chances during their lone power play.
However, the Canadiens gained momentum late in the second, with Cole Caufield scoring to narrow the deficit. Montreal tied the game 7:58 into the third period on a goal by Emil Heineman before Kirby Dach netted the game-winner with just under 10 minutes left.
Knights coach Bruce Cassidy attributed the loss to lapses in execution.
“We dominated a lot of this game but didn’t finish,” Cassidy said. “Those are points we should have had.”
Turnovers Prove Costly
Vegas struggled with puck management, recording 23 giveaways, their third-most in a game this season. Whitecloud noted the team’s inability to maintain composure against Montreal’s forecheck, particularly in the third period.
“You’ve got to manage the puck,” Whitecloud said. “If you allow fast-paced teams to transition, they’ll take advantage.”
Montembeault’s Heroics
Montreal goaltender Sam Montembeault played a pivotal role, stopping 27 shots, including two key saves in the final seconds. He denied a one-timer from Noah Hanifin and a follow-up attempt by Victor Olofsson to preserve the victory.
“He stepped up when they needed him,” Cassidy said.
Three Takeaways from the Game
Montembeault Clutch in Net: Montembeault’s strong performance gave Montreal the edge, particularly in high-pressure moments.
Second Line Shines: Tomas Hertl, William Karlsson, and Keegan Kolesar showed chemistry, contributing to Whitecloud’s first-period goal.
Rare New Year’s Eve Loss: The Knights fell to 4-1 all-time on New Year’s Eve, their first loss on the holiday since joining the NHL.
Looking Ahead
The Knights (25-9-3) will aim to bounce back Thursday against the Philadelphia Flyers. Cassidy stressed the importance of moving forward, saying, “Not our night. Let’s get ready for Philly.”
Montreal (17-17-3), meanwhile, continues its strong stretch, winning six of its last seven games.

❎ Trump Endorses Mike Johnson as Speakership Vote Looms Amid GOP Tensions

President-elect Donald Trump has publicly endorsed House Speaker Mike Johnson, offering crucial backing ahead of a contentious leadership vote this week. Johnson, who has worked to maintain Trump’s confidence, faces growing dissent within his party over recent legislative decisions and his handling of spending negotiations.
Trump’s endorsement, announced Monday on his social media platform, solidifies his alignment with Johnson despite dissatisfaction from far-right Republicans over a bipartisan spending deal Johnson brokered to avert a government shutdown.
Fiscal Disputes Strain Support
The spending measure passed shortly before Christmas ensured the government remained operational but drew criticism from conservative factions within the Republican Party. These lawmakers objected to Johnson’s reliance on Democratic support and viewed the deal as falling short of their broader goals, including substantial spending cuts and a plan to address the debt limit.
The discontent underscores the challenges Johnson faces in managing the GOP’s internal divisions. While the deal avoided a holiday shutdown, it revealed the limits of Johnson’s influence within the party and left some members questioning his ability to lead effectively.
Far-Right Opposition Builds
Several conservative Republicans have expressed skepticism about Johnson’s leadership as the Jan. 3 speakership vote approaches. Key figures, including members of the House Freedom Caucus, have criticized the party’s progress on reducing government spending and deficits since Trump’s electoral victory in November.
This dissatisfaction is compounded by demands for more aggressive fiscal reforms, particularly in light of rising inflation and federal debt. Johnson’s leadership will likely hinge on his ability to address these concerns while maintaining party unity in the face of competing priorities.
The Path Forward
Despite internal resistance, Johnson has worked to reassure Trump and align with the president-elect’s priorities. Johnson has committed to addressing the debt limit in 2025, a key issue for Trump’s agenda. This alignment has helped him maintain Trump’s support, even as criticism mounts from other factions of the GOP.
The upcoming leadership vote will test Johnson’s ability to navigate the delicate balance between satisfying his party’s conservative wing and building consensus for legislative action. As divisions persist, Johnson’s capacity to manage the GOP’s differing priorities will likely shape his tenure as speaker and the effectiveness of the Republican majority in the next Congress.
A High-Stakes Leadership Battle
The January vote represents a pivotal moment for Johnson, whose position as speaker depends on his ability to unify a fractured party. The outcome will not only determine his leadership but also set the tone for the GOP’s agenda as it prepares to govern with Trump at the helm.

✈ Harry Reid International Airport Reports Slight Dip in Passenger Traffic Amid Formula One Turnout Decline

Passenger traffic at Harry Reid International Airport fell slightly in November due to a lighter-than-expected turnout for the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix. According to the Clark County Department of Aviation, the airport handled 4.7 million passengers during the month, marking a 2.1 percent decline compared to November 2023.
While domestic traffic dropped 3.3 percent year-over-year, international passenger counts surged by 16.2 percent, reflecting the global appeal of the Formula One event among international travelers.
Record-Breaking Year Still on Track
Despite the November dip, Harry Reid International Airport remains on pace for its highest annual passenger volume in history.
Domestic Traffic: Up 0.8 percent for the year to 49.3 million passengers.
International Traffic: Up 13.6 percent to 3 million passengers.
Overall Traffic: Up 1.4 percent year-to-date at 53.6 million passengers.
The airport’s busiest year to date was 2023, when it recorded 57.6 million passengers. With December’s numbers yet to be released, the 2024 total is expected to be announced in January.
Airline Performance
Most domestic carriers experienced a downturn in November, with only Alaska, Breeze, Frontier, and Hawaiian Airlines posting gains. Market leader Southwest Airlines saw a 4.3 percent drop to 1.7 million passengers for the month.
However, Southwest and other top carriers have shown growth over the first 11 months of the year:
Delta Air Lines: Up 6 percent to 4.9 million passengers.
American Airlines: Up 5.4 percent to 4.1 million passengers.
United Airlines: Up 3.9 percent to 3.9 million passengers.
Spirit Airlines: Down 10.4 percent in November and 4.1 percent year-to-date to 7.4 million passengers.
International Growth Fueled by Formula One
The Formula One event attracted significant international attention, particularly from Europe and Latin America. Several airlines reported substantial year-over-year growth for November:
Edelweiss Air: Up 136.8 percent.
Vivaaerobus and Volaris: Notable increases due to strong travel demand between Las Vegas and Mexico.
British Airways and Virgin Atlantic: Slight increases as the airport’s largest overseas carriers.
Looking Ahead
With international travel surging and annual passenger totals trending upward, Harry Reid International Airport is positioned to break its annual traffic record despite November’s slight decline. December’s passenger counts, coupled with continued international demand, will determine whether the airport achieves this milestone.

😋 Michael Mina’s International Smoke to Close at MGM Grand in January

The Las Vegas Strip is set to lose one of its dining destinations next month as International Smoke, a restaurant from celebrity chef Michael Mina and entrepreneur Ayesha Curry, will close its doors at the MGM Grand. MGM Resorts confirmed that the eatery’s last day of business will be January 19, 2025.
A Four-Year Tenure on the Strip
International Smoke opened at the MGM Grand in December 2019, bringing a fusion of global barbecue flavors to the heart of the Las Vegas Strip. The restaurant was part of a broader partnership between Mina and Curry, who co-created the concept.
At the time of its Las Vegas debut, International Smoke also had locations in San Francisco, Del Mar, and Miami. However, the restaurant’s website now lists only its San Francisco location.
The closure marks the end of a relatively short four-year run in Las Vegas. Like many Strip venues, International Smoke faced challenges in navigating the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted the hospitality and dining industries soon after the restaurant’s opening.
Future Plans for MGM Grand
While MGM Resorts has not disclosed specific reasons for the closure, the company hinted at upcoming changes. In a statement, MGM announced that details on "an exciting new addition" to its culinary offerings at the MGM Grand would be shared in the near future.
This announcement aligns with the trend of high-profile Las Vegas resorts continually updating their dining portfolios to cater to changing tastes and trends on the Strip.
Michael Mina’s Continued Presence in Las Vegas
Despite the closure of International Smoke, Michael Mina remains a prominent figure in the Las Vegas dining scene. The chef and restaurateur operates several other acclaimed restaurants in the city, including Michael Mina at Bellagio and Stripsteak at Mandalay Bay.
Mina’s reputation for creating elevated dining experiences ensures that his influence on Las Vegas’ culinary landscape will continue, even as International Smoke departs.
Evolving Culinary Landscape
International Smoke’s departure underscores the dynamic nature of the Las Vegas Strip’s dining scene, where venues constantly evolve to capture the attention of locals and visitors. With MGM hinting at a replacement concept, anticipation is already building for what’s next in one of the Strip’s most vibrant dining destinations.
