😋 It’Sugar to Close Its Downtown Summerlin Location

The popular specialty candy retailer It’Sugar is set to close its Downtown Summerlin store on Monday, marking the end of its run at one of Las Vegas’ premier shopping and entertainment destinations.
Located at 1980 Festival Plaza Drive, Suite 195, the store is situated between fashion retailers Free People and White House Black Market. Known for its playful branding and wide array of candy and novelty items, It’Sugar has been a favorite among locals and tourists alike for sweet treats and unique gift options.
Closure Specifics and Remaining Locations
While the Downtown Summerlin location will shut its doors, It’Sugar continues to maintain a strong presence in Las Vegas, with five other locations across the valley. These include:
The Venetian
The Palazzo
Grand Bazaar Shops
Fashion Show Mall
Town Square
No additional closures have been announced, suggesting this decision is specific to the Downtown Summerlin location.
Reason for Closure Unknown
It’Sugar has not provided details about the reason for the store’s closure. Requests for comment from corporate representatives were not immediately returned. Potential factors could include changes in foot traffic, lease agreements, or broader strategic decisions by the company.
It’Sugar’s Appeal and Brand
Founded in 2006, It’Sugar is one of the largest specialty candy retailers in the world, with over 100 locations across the U.S. The brand is known for its vibrant stores featuring oversized candy displays, nostalgic treats, and exclusive branded merchandise.
The retailer thrives in areas with high foot traffic, including shopping malls and tourist destinations, making its presence in Las Vegas a natural fit. Its remaining locations on the Strip and other prominent retail hubs suggest that the brand is still committed to serving the Las Vegas community.
Impact on Downtown Summerlin
Downtown Summerlin, a bustling shopping and dining district, is a popular destination for families and visitors. The departure of It’Sugar opens up an opportunity for a new tenant to fill the space, potentially bringing a fresh retail or dining concept to the area.
While the closure marks a change for shoppers, Downtown Summerlin remains a vibrant hub with a diverse mix of retailers, ensuring that the district continues to thrive.

🏒 Golden Knights Stay Hot, Improve to 11 Wins in Last 13 Games

The Vegas Golden Knights shook off a sluggish start and a rare loss earlier in the week, rallying to defeat the Philadelphia Flyers 5-2 Thursday night at T-Mobile Arena. With goals from five different players and a dominant second period, the Knights improved to 26-9-3 and maintained their position as one of the NHL’s top teams.
Resilient Response
Following their six-game winning streak being snapped by the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday, the Knights proved once again why they’ve been so effective after losses. The team now boasts a 9-4 record in games following a defeat, with goaltender Ilya Samsonov contributing 23 saves to earn his fifth straight win.
Despite a rough start, with the Flyers scoring just 21 seconds into the game, the Knights turned things around with three goals in the second period. Captain Mark Stone, defenseman Nic Hague, and right wing Pavel Dorofeyev each found the net, giving Vegas a 3-1 lead heading into the third.
Key Plays Fuel Comeback
After a quiet first period that saw the Flyers dominate with an 8-4 edge in shots, the Knights quickly flipped the script.
Mark Stone tied the game just 51 seconds into the second period with a tip-in set up by Jack Eichel.
Nic Hague capitalized on a forced turnover, scoring his third goal of the season with a wraparound less than two minutes later.
Pavel Dorofeyev extended the lead with a wrist shot late in the period, marking his 14th goal of the season—a new career high.
In the third, Alexander Holtz added an insurance goal, and Tanner Pearson sealed the win with an empty-net tally in the final minute.
Defensive Strength Shines
The Knights’ defensive efforts were crucial, holding an opponent to two goals or fewer for the 10th time in their past 13 games. This consistency has been key to their impressive 11-2 stretch since early December.
Holtz, despite leaving the ice briefly after blocking a shot with his knee, returned to finish the game and contributed a crucial goal.
Looking Ahead
The Golden Knights will conclude their four-game homestand Saturday against the Buffalo Sabres, aiming to continue their dominant run.
Three Takeaways from the Game
Depth in Action:
Despite recalling center Tanner Laczynski as a precaution, the Knights fielded a full lineup without needing to make any last-minute changes.Dorofeyev’s Milestone:
Pavel Dorofeyev’s second-period goal marked his 14th of the season, surpassing his career-high set last year. The 24-year-old is regaining his form after a mid-season slump.Holtz Breaks Through:
Alexander Holtz ended a scoring drought that had lasted since December 4, netting a much-needed goal. Though briefly sidelined with a knee issue, Holtz returned late in the game, providing reassurance about his condition.

❎ Speaker Mike Johnson Faces Internal Opposition as GOP Launches New Congress

The newly convened Congress has launched its first session, with one immediate and critical task dominating proceedings: electing a House speaker. Current Speaker Mike Johnson, facing opposition from within his own party, must secure enough Republican support to remain in power and help execute President-elect Donald Trump’s ambitious legislative agenda.
Speaker Election’s High Stakes
The election of the House speaker is not only a constitutional requirement but also a pivotal moment for the incoming GOP-led Congress. The position, second in the line of presidential succession, is essential for advancing Trump’s plans for sweeping tax cuts, mass deportations, and other “America First” policies.
Johnson’s leadership faces challenges from hardline Republicans skeptical of his ability to push forward their agenda. The GOP holds one of the narrowest House majorities in modern history, leaving little room for dissent.
Internal Divisions Persist
Key figures in the Freedom Caucus and other far-right factions have withheld support, citing dissatisfaction with Republican leadership's handling of fiscal matters and year-end spending negotiations. Representatives like Chip Roy and Thomas Massie remain hesitant, underscoring the fragile coalition Johnson must navigate.
Johnson has worked tirelessly to shore up support, including spending New Year’s Day alongside Trump at Mar-a-Lago. His efforts to unify the party include a new rule requiring at least nine members of the majority party to support any resolution to remove the speaker, a departure from the single-member threshold that weakened former Speaker Kevin McCarthy.
Historical Context and Precedent
This year’s speaker election is reminiscent of 2023, when it took 15 rounds of voting for McCarthy to secure the gavel. McCarthy’s tenure ended with his removal, a historic first, highlighting the volatility within the GOP’s ranks.
Without a speaker, Congress cannot move forward with its legislative duties, including the certification of Trump’s 2024 election victory. Johnson has warned that a failure to elect a speaker could lead to a “constitutional crisis” just days before Congress is required to count electoral votes on January 6.
Diverse and Historic Congress
The opening session of Congress also welcomed a roster of history-making lawmakers. The Senate saw the swearing-in of two Black women senators, Lisa Blunt Rochester of Delaware and Angela Alsobrooks of Maryland, serving together for the first time in U.S. history. Andy Kim of New Jersey became the first Korean American senator.
In the House, Sarah McBride of Delaware made history as the first openly transgender person to serve in Congress. Former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, recovering from recent surgery, also returned, reminding many of her impactful leadership during past Democratic majorities.
Outlook for the GOP Agenda
As Johnson’s future hangs in the balance, the stakes for the GOP could not be higher. Trump’s Cabinet nominees await confirmation in the Senate, and his sweeping 100-day agenda hinges on Republican unity.
The speaker election’s outcome will set the tone for this Congress, with Trump’s influence expected to play a decisive role.

😋 Surgeon General Issues Advisory Calling for New Alcohol Warning Labels and Increased Awareness of Cancer Risk

The U.S. Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, released an advisory Friday urging updates to warning labels on alcoholic beverages to include the risks of alcohol-related cancers. The advisory highlights alcohol consumption as a significant but often overlooked cause of cancer, accounting for approximately 100,000 cancer cases and 20,000 deaths annually in the United States.
Alcohol and Cancer Risk
Alcohol is the third leading preventable cause of cancer in the U.S., following tobacco and obesity, according to the advisory. It increases the risk for at least seven types of cancer, including breast, liver, and colorectal cancer. Despite this, awareness among the public remains low.
Dr. Murthy emphasized that alcohol-related cancer deaths surpass annual fatalities from alcohol-related traffic crashes in the U.S., yet many Americans remain unaware of the risks.
Key Recommendations
The advisory outlines several measures aimed at reducing alcohol-related cancer cases and increasing public awareness:
Updated Warning Labels: Advocates for revising health warnings on alcohol products to explicitly mention cancer risks.
Revised Consumption Guidelines: Calls for a reassessment of current alcohol consumption guidelines to factor in cancer risk.
Public Health Campaigns: Urges community groups and public health professionals to educate the public about alcohol as a modifiable cancer risk factor.
Clinical Interventions: Recommends healthcare providers inform patients about the connection between alcohol and cancer, while promoting alcohol screening and treatment referrals when needed.
Strengthened Education Efforts: Encourages expansion of educational initiatives to raise awareness of the cancer risks associated with alcohol consumption.
Impact on Public Health Policy
This advisory is part of a broader effort to address modifiable risk factors for cancer and reduce the disease’s overall impact. It aligns with other public health initiatives aimed at curbing preventable causes of cancer through education, policy changes, and clinical interventions.
The advisory underscores the importance of informed decision-making when it comes to alcohol consumption. Individuals are encouraged to consider their personal cancer risk when deciding whether or how much to drink.
Next Steps
The Surgeon General’s recommendations aim to spark action among policymakers, healthcare providers, and community leaders to address the overlooked risks of alcohol consumption. By updating labels and expanding awareness campaigns, the goal is to empower individuals to make healthier choices and reduce alcohol-related cancer rates across the nation.
