🏈 Raiders Launch Coaching Search with Big Names and Strategic Priorities

A day after parting ways with Antonio Pierce, the Las Vegas Raiders have ramped up their search for a new head coach, casting a wide net that includes prominent names and innovative minds. Among the early candidates is former Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, a surprising inclusion that highlights the influence of new minority owner Tom Brady on the selection process.
Key Figures in the Search
Mark Davis: Raiders owner leading the search for Pierce's replacement.
Tom Brady: Recently acquired a minority stake in the team and is expected to play a major advisory role.
Brady’s involvement is already bearing fruit, as evidenced by Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson’s decision to accept an interview with the Raiders despite having multiple suitors.
Interview Requests and Candidates
The Raiders have requested interviews with several high-profile coordinators from playoff-bound teams:
Ben Johnson (Lions Offensive Coordinator)
Age: 38
Achievements: Has led the Lions to a top-five scoring offense for three consecutive seasons. Oversaw the NFL’s highest-scoring offense this year.
Scheduled Interview: Friday, with other interviews lined up with the Bears and Patriots.
Aaron Glenn (Lions Defensive Coordinator)
Age: 52
Achievements: His defense ranked seventh in points allowed this season despite significant injuries to key players.
Steve Spagnuolo (Chiefs Defensive Coordinator)
Age: 65
Achievements: Three-time Super Bowl champion with Kansas City. Has coached five top-10 scoring defenses in his career.
Head Coaching Experience: Former Rams head coach (2009-2011) and interim head coach for the Giants in 2017.
Todd Monken (Ravens Offensive Coordinator)
Age: 58
Achievements: Elevated Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson to a career-best 4,172 passing yards and 41 touchdowns this season. Former Georgia offensive coordinator credited with developing Raiders tight end Brock Bowers.
Focus on Experience and Innovation
The Raiders’ search is reportedly prioritizing candidates with experience and a proven track record, but innovative offensive minds like Johnson and Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen are also under consideration.
Veteran head coaches like Mike Vrabel (former Titans coach), Pete Carroll (former Seahawks coach), and Bill Belichick are part of the conversation.
Belichick and Brady’s Connection
Belichick, now head coach at North Carolina, is an intriguing name in the mix. Brady and Belichick, who won six Super Bowls together in New England, have discussed the Raiders’ opening, but sources indicate these talks may be more informational than substantive.
Belichick’s North Carolina contract includes a $10 million buyout if he departs before June 1, 2025, which could complicate any pursuit.
The Raiders’ Challenges and Opportunities
The Raiders face a significant hurdle in attracting top coaching talent due to their lack of a franchise quarterback. However, Brady’s presence and the allure of leading one of the NFL’s most iconic franchises could offset that challenge.
The team’s initial success in landing an interview with Ben Johnson, who is expected to be highly selective, is a promising sign. Johnson’s creativity and ability to build an offense around a quarterback could help the Raiders reshape their future.
Timelines and Other Openings
With other teams like the Bears, Patriots, Jaguars, Jets, and Saints also searching for head coaches, competition for top candidates is intense. Virtual interviews with playoff coaches like Johnson, Glenn, and Spagnuolo are permitted this week, but in-person meetings will have to wait until their respective teams are eliminated or after the Super Bowl.
Candidates from teams playing this weekend, including Monken and Coen, will be unavailable for interviews until next week.
What’s Next for the Raiders?
As the Raiders navigate this critical decision, they appear to be pursuing a mix of seasoned leaders and emerging stars in the coaching world. Their ability to secure a dynamic and experienced head coach will play a pivotal role in reshaping the team’s future and building on Brady’s influence as part-owner.

❎ Meta Ends Fact-Checking as Social Media Faces New Challenges

More than four decades ago, New York Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously observed that everyone is entitled to their own opinions but not their own facts. Today, that sentiment feels far removed from the current reality, as Meta’s decision to end its fact-checking program on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads sparks questions about the future of truth and accountability in the digital age.
The announcement, widely interpreted as a nod to President-elect Donald Trump, signals a shift in how major tech companies handle misinformation. Fact-checking will be replaced by a “community notes” system, similar to the approach taken by X (formerly Twitter). This change hands more responsibility to users to identify and address misinformation, raising concerns about its effectiveness in promoting accurate information.
The Evolution of Fact-Checking
Fact-checking in journalism is relatively new, originating in the 1990s to counterbalance "he said-she said" reporting and monitor political claims. Organizations like FactCheck.org (founded in 2003) and PolitiFact (founded in 2007) were established to help journalists and the public verify claims, often calling out politicians for falsehoods.
PolitiFact even won a Pulitzer Prize in 2008 for its campaign coverage, which openly labeled falsehoods in ways traditional journalism often avoided to maintain relationships with sources. By the 2010s, however, fact-checking faced growing skepticism, particularly from Republicans, some of whom saw it as biased against conservative views.
Meta’s Shift and Political Ramifications
Meta founder Mark Zuckerberg’s decision to discontinue fact-checking has drawn criticism, with many viewing it as a concession to Trump’s return to the political spotlight. Critics argue this move undermines efforts to combat misinformation at a time when false claims about elections and political figures remain prevalent.
Meta’s replacement system, inspired by X, relies on users to provide context and corrections to questionable content. This method raises concerns about a return to “he said-she said” reporting, where the loudest voices often dominate, regardless of accuracy.
Fact-Checking Under Fire
The backlash against fact-checking has been intensifying for years. By 2019, a Poynter Institute survey found that 70% of Republicans believed fact-checkers were biased, compared to 30% of Democrats. Recent examples highlight the divide:
Conservative watchdog site NewsBusters.org claimed that PolitiFact criticized Republican officials for “mostly false” statements 88 times in the first nine months of 2024, compared to only 31 times for Democrats.
Critics like Tim Graham of NewsBusters interpret this disparity as evidence of bias rather than a reflection of the frequency of false claims.
Proponents of fact-checking counter that such criticism often comes from those unwilling to face accountability. Fact-checking, they argue, is essential for countering exaggerated or outright false claims.
Trump’s Impact on Truth and Media
Former PolitiFact editor Bill Adair, now a professor at Duke University, has observed how Trump’s presidency accelerated skepticism toward fact-checking. In his book, Beyond the Big Lie, Adair argues that Trump has normalized political falsehoods and demonstrated that politicians can lie without significant consequences.
This tension reached a boiling point during the 2024 presidential campaign, when ABC News drew Trump’s ire for highlighting inaccuracies during his debate with Kamala Harris.
The Role of Social Media Algorithms
Fact-checking on social media has also been intertwined with algorithms that determine content visibility. Posts flagged as false often received less exposure, which some Republicans equated to censorship. However, fact-checkers argue that such systems were designed to prioritize truth and reduce the reach of harmful misinformation.
The removal of these systems on platforms like Meta and X means fact-checking efforts will no longer benefit from algorithmic support, potentially reducing their impact.
The Future of Fact-Checking
Meta’s decision could significantly alter the fact-checking industry, which has grown to include 170 organizations worldwide under the International Fact-Checking Network. Many of these groups face staff cuts and closures as tech platforms withdraw support.
Fact-checking pioneer Kathleen Hall Jamieson sees this shift as a turning point. While she hopes that informed social media users will step up to challenge falsehoods, she acknowledges the challenges ahead. Successful fact-checking, she argues, is about presenting counterarguments rather than silencing dissent.
To preserve fact-checking as a journalistic practice, experts like Adair believe influential Republican leaders must advocate for its importance. Meanwhile, Graham suggests that restoring trust in media will require humility and a willingness to acknowledge errors.
A Battle for Truth in the Digital Age
Meta’s move to eliminate fact-checking underscores the growing tension between accountability and free speech on digital platforms. As misinformation continues to shape political discourse, the role of fact-checkers—and the platforms that host them—remains a critical issue for the future of journalism and democracy.

🎰 Nevada Gaming Revenue Declines in November Amid Formula One Impact

Nevada’s gaming industry experienced a continued downturn in November, with statewide revenue dropping 4.2 percent compared to the same month last year. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board, the state’s 441 largest casinos reported total gaming win of $1.31 billion, reflecting a softening trend in the post-pandemic recovery of the gaming sector.
Clark County and Strip Revenue Declines
Clark County, home to Las Vegas and the state’s most significant gaming markets, also saw a 4.2 percent decline in gaming revenue, totaling $1.16 billion for the month.
The Strip: Revenue on the iconic Las Vegas Strip dropped 3.9 percent to $788.7 million, signaling reduced activity in the state’s primary tourist and entertainment hub.
Impact of Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix
One major factor contributing to the decline was the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix, held in November. While the inaugural event in 2023 generated substantial visitor interest and gaming revenue, the 2024 race saw a noticeable dip in attendance and overall economic impact.
Visitor Metrics: The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) reported that November visitation was flat compared to the previous year, and hotel occupancy rates and average daily room rates were also lower.
Reduced Formula One Buzz: The initial excitement surrounding the first race in 2023 waned in its second year, leading to diminished crowds and less spending in casinos, restaurants, and hotels.
Broader Trends in the Gaming Sector
The November decline continues a broader downward trend in Nevada’s gaming revenue observed throughout the latter half of 2024. Analysts attribute the slowdown to several factors:
Economic Headwinds: Rising interest rates and inflation have strained discretionary spending for many consumers, reducing their ability to travel and gamble.
Normalization Post-Pandemic: The unprecedented growth in gaming revenue during 2021 and 2022, driven by pent-up demand and stimulus spending, has tapered off, leading to more typical revenue levels.
Competitive Pressure: New gaming markets in states like New York and Texas are providing alternative options for travelers, diverting potential visitors from Nevada.
Hotel and Tourism Challenges
The decline in gaming win was mirrored by challenges in other key metrics for the Las Vegas hospitality industry:
Flat Visitation: Total visitor numbers were steady compared to November 2023, but there was no growth to offset declining gaming revenues.
Lower Hotel Occupancy: Hotel occupancy rates were down, reducing foot traffic to casinos and gaming floors.
Average Daily Room Rate (ADR): The ADR also fell, reflecting weaker demand and promotional pricing aimed at attracting more visitors.
Outlook for Nevada Gaming
Despite the November slump, Nevada’s gaming sector remains a dominant force in the global industry. However, the state’s reliance on major events like Formula One, conventions, and entertainment showcases the importance of continued innovation and strategic planning to maintain its competitive edge.
Key Areas to Watch:
Event Strategy: How Las Vegas plans to maintain or grow interest in events like Formula One, the Super Bowl, and major conventions.
Economic Recovery: Monitoring consumer spending trends amid inflationary pressures and global economic uncertainty.
Diversification: Expanding non-gaming revenue streams, such as dining, retail, and entertainment, to reduce reliance on casino floors.
As 2025 progresses, the gaming industry will aim to balance short-term challenges with long-term opportunities to sustain its status as a global entertainment capital.
