🚒 Nevada Firefighters Work 24-Hour Shifts in California Wildfire Response

Two firefighting teams from Southern Nevada have been actively battling major wildfires in Southern California, according to Clark County officials. The teams, consisting of 46 personnel from the Clark County Fire Department, Las Vegas Fire Department, and Henderson Fire Department, have been deployed to assist with efforts in Los Angeles County.
Palisades Fire Efforts
The first team, a 24-person strike unit deployed on Wednesday, was assigned to the Palisades Fire, which has consumed over 20,000 acres and was 6 percent contained as of Friday. This team, equipped with five engines, two battalion chiefs, a mechanic, and a logistics team member, focused on extinguishing spot fires in residential neighborhoods.
Early Friday morning, they collaborated with the Los Angeles County Fire Department to put out a two-story house fire. The Palisades Fire has mobilized more than 3,000 firefighters, 350 engines, and extensive aerial and heavy equipment resources to combat the blaze.
Eaton Fire Operations
A second team, comprising 21 members, left Las Vegas on Thursday and was assigned to the Eaton Fire near Pasadena. This team joined Division Zulu alongside an Arizona Task Force, working to extinguish spot fires threatening nearby homes.
The Eaton Fire, which has burned 14,000 acres and remained 0 percent contained as of Friday, has 1,500 personnel and 80 engines engaged in suppression efforts. The Southern Nevada team includes four engines, a water tender, two battalion chiefs, a mechanic, and a logistics member.
Round-the-Clock Operations
Both teams have been operating on 24-hour shifts, beginning with 7 a.m. briefings to receive daily orders. The deployment is expected to last one to two weeks, with Southern Nevada personnel providing critical support in an area facing significant wildfire challenges.

🏒 Vegas Golden Knights secured a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild

The Vegas Golden Knights secured a 4-1 victory over the Minnesota Wild on Sunday night at T-Mobile Arena, snapping a two-game losing streak. Pavel Dorofeyev led the offense with two goals and an assist, marking the third multi-goal game of his career. Tomas Hertl contributed a goal and an assist, while Keegan Kolesar added a goal. Defensemen Shea Theodore and Mark Stone each provided two assists. Goaltender Adin Hill was solid between the pipes, making 15 saves to help the Golden Knights improve to 23-3-2 against Western Conference opponents.
The Wild initially took the lead at 12:09 of the first period when Ryan Hartman capitalized on a 2-on-1 opportunity, beating Hill with a wrist shot. However, the Golden Knights responded in the second period. Dorofeyev netted a power-play goal, receiving a pass from Stone in the slot and firing a wrist shot into the top-right corner, leveling the score at 1-1.
Vegas dominated the third period, scoring three unanswered goals. Kolesar gave the Golden Knights a 2-1 lead by backhanding a rebound past Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson. Hertl extended the advantage to 3-1, scoring on his own rebound with a shot into the top-right corner. Dorofeyev sealed the win with his second power-play goal of the night, bringing his season total to a team-leading 16 goals.
The victory highlights the Golden Knights' resilience and depth, particularly with Dorofeyev's standout performance. They will look to build on this momentum in their upcoming games as they continue to compete strongly within the Western Conference.

❎ DeSantis Calls Special Session to Align Florida with Trump’s Immigration Crackdown

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced a special legislative session scheduled for the week of January 27, aimed at supporting President-elect Donald Trump’s aggressive immigration policies set to launch immediately after his inauguration. The move reflects DeSantis’ commitment to aligning Florida’s state policies with the incoming administration’s federal agenda.
Immigration Enforcement Priorities
DeSantis emphasized the necessity for state and local officials in Florida to assist with the enforcement of federal immigration laws. The governor pledged to introduce legislation imposing additional responsibilities on local authorities and allocating tens of millions of dollars in funding for expanded enforcement and detention efforts.
Key measures proposed include:
Granting state officials authority to suspend elected leaders who fail to enforce immigration laws.
Potentially activating the Florida National Guard and Florida State Guard for in-state immigration enforcement.
Strengthening accountability for individuals violating the state’s anti-sanctuary policies.
Trump’s Immigration Agenda
Trump has outlined plans for over 100 executive orders, starting on Day One of his presidency, targeting border security, deportations, and other policy priorities. While Trump’s team has pledged mass deportations, the feasibility of such measures—given the estimated 11 million undocumented individuals in the U.S.—remains uncertain.
DeSantis’ session aims to ensure Florida is ready to implement Trump’s policies immediately.
Additional Legislative Goals
In addition to immigration, DeSantis has outlined other legislative priorities for the special session, including:
Hurricane Relief: Addressing ongoing recovery efforts following recent storms.
Condominium Market Reforms: Amending safety and market regulations passed after the Surfside condominium collapse in 2021, which killed 98 people. Rising costs associated with compliance have prompted calls for adjustments.
Citizen Ballot Initiative Reforms: Overhauling the state’s ballot initiative process after alleging fraud in a 2024 measure that sought to expand abortion rights.
Political Implications
The session underscores DeSantis’ alignment with Trump’s federal agenda, solidifying Florida’s position as a key state in implementing the administration’s policies. Critics argue the measures could strain local resources and deepen divisions over immigration enforcement.
The session also reflects broader Republican priorities, as DeSantis seeks to strengthen Florida’s response to key issues, including hurricane recovery and real estate market stabilization.
By swiftly organizing legislative action, DeSantis positions Florida as a model for state-level support of Trump’s initiatives while advancing his own conservative agenda.

🏒 How Two Mayors Turned Las Vegas into a Major League Sports Destination

Former Las Vegas mayors Oscar and Carolyn Goodman left an indelible mark on the city through their tireless efforts to bring professional sports and cultural advancements to the community. Spanning 25 years in office collectively, their vision helped shape Las Vegas into a vibrant hub for sports and culture, further boosting tourism and the city’s national profile.
Sports: From Vision to Reality
Oscar Goodman’s tenure as mayor, beginning in 1999, was marked by ambitious goals: establishing a cultural centerpiece, enhancing medical facilities, and bringing major league sports to Las Vegas. At the time, the city’s sports scene was dominated by UNLV’s Runnin’ Rebels basketball team and the minor league Las Vegas Stars, now the Aviators.
In 2017, Las Vegas realized Goodman’s vision with the arrival of the Vegas Golden Knights, the city’s first major professional sports team. The success of the NHL franchise paved the way for the Las Vegas Raiders’ relocation, and soon, Major League Baseball’s Oakland Athletics will call Las Vegas home.
Despite initial resistance from major sports leagues due to Nevada’s gambling culture, the Goodmans built relationships with key figures like NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and former NFL Commissioner Paul Tagliabue. Their efforts laid the groundwork for sports to thrive in Las Vegas, from boxing and NASCAR to hosting NBA All-Star Games and preseason matches.
“Sports became a community asset,” Carolyn Goodman noted, highlighting the economic and cultural benefits. Visiting fans now fill hotel rooms, dine at local restaurants, and contribute to the city’s thriving tourism industry.
Cultural and Medical Achievements
The Goodmans also championed cultural and medical advancements. They played a role in developing the Smith Center for the Performing Arts and downtown’s Mob Museum, cementing Las Vegas as more than just a gaming destination. On the medical front, the establishment of the Kirk Kerkorian School of Medicine at UNLV in 2014 was a significant milestone, addressing the city’s healthcare needs.
Personal Touches and Memorable Moments
The Goodmans’ personal connections with sports figures often fueled their efforts. Carolyn recounted riding with Dodgers legend Tommy Lasorda during the 1980 World Series, a relationship that opened doors with Major League Baseball executives.
Oscar’s relationship with the NBA began with Commissioner David Stern, whose initial skepticism about Las Vegas hosting an NBA team softened over time. The city eventually hosted the 2007 NBA All-Star Game, a milestone that showcased Las Vegas’ potential for professional basketball.
Looking Back with Pride
Now retired from public office, the Goodmans reflect on their contributions with pride. Carolyn, who left office in December 2024, expressed excitement for the city’s future, including the Athletics’ anticipated arrival in 2027.
“You can see the difference in our personalities,” Oscar said, acknowledging Carolyn’s reputation as a beloved community figure compared to his own preference for being “respected and feared.”
As Las Vegas prepares for continued growth in professional sports and cultural enrichment, the Goodmans’ legacy serves as a testament to their vision and dedication to the city they helped transform.
