🏒 Knights Look to Start Strong as They Take on Carolina in Raleigh

The Vegas Golden Knights and Carolina Hurricanes, both navigating through recent challenges, will meet Friday at the Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo emphasized the importance of the game for both teams, aiming to rebound from disappointing performances.

The last meeting between the teams on November 11 saw Carolina dominate early, jumping to a 4-0 lead and handing Vegas their first home loss of the season with a 5-2 victory. Pietrangelo acknowledged the Hurricanes' strong performance in that game and stressed the need for a solid effort this time.

Diverging Paths Since November

Since November 21, the Knights (29-12-3) have been one of the NHL's top teams, going 18-6-1 and boasting the second-best points percentage behind the Edmonton Oilers. In contrast, the Hurricanes (26-16-3) have struggled, with a 12-12-3 record and a minus-8 goal differential over the same period, though they remain third in the Metropolitan Division.

Carolina’s recent struggles include losses to the Anaheim Ducks in overtime on Sunday and the Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday. The Knights are also looking to recover after a 5-3 loss to the Nashville Predators on Tuesday.

Focus on a Strong Start

Coach Bruce Cassidy highlighted slow starts as a concern for the Knights, particularly after being outshot 11-1 in the first period against Nashville. Despite this, the team has excelled in later stages of games, leading the NHL in comeback wins (16) and tying for the most third-period goals (64).

Cassidy expressed the need for a more aggressive start on Friday, especially as the Knights prepare for a back-to-back set, traveling to face the Chicago Blackhawks on Saturday.

Donald Trump has outlined an ambitious agenda for the first day of his second presidency, with sweeping promises to enact major policy changes and executive actions. However, the feasibility of many of these initiatives faces significant legal and logistical challenges.

Key Promises for Day 1:

  1. Immigration: Launch a large-scale deportation program targeting millions of undocumented immigrants, declare a national emergency at the border, and tighten enforcement to curb illegal crossings.

  2. Tariffs: Impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada and an additional 10% tariff on goods from China, aiming to reduce drug smuggling and illegal migration while boosting domestic production.

  3. Birthright Citizenship: Attempt to end automatic citizenship for children born in the U.S. to undocumented parents, a move requiring constitutional amendments unlikely to be achieved through executive action alone.

  4. Education and Culture: Cut federal funding for schools promoting "critical race theory," gender identity policies, or enforcing vaccine and mask mandates. Additionally, roll back Title IX protections against discrimination based on gender identity.

  5. Energy Policy: Declare a national energy emergency, push for increased domestic drilling, and fast-track energy projects, reversing many Biden-era environmental regulations.

  6. Pardons: Issue pardons for some individuals charged or convicted in connection with the January 6 Capitol attack, with a team reportedly reviewing cases to prioritize pardons.

  7. Russia-Ukraine War: Work toward a negotiated resolution to the ongoing conflict, although earlier promises to end the war before taking office have been walked back.

  8. Deep State: Renew efforts to classify civil servants as political appointees to enable firings and launch broader moves against perceived political opposition within the federal bureaucracy.

Practical Constraints:

Many of Trump’s promises rely on executive orders, which have limits and can face legal challenges. Changes to constitutional rights, such as ending birthright citizenship, require congressional action and lengthy amendment processes. Similarly, bold tariff measures and education funding cuts may provoke domestic and international opposition.

While some actions, like issuing pardons and directing enforcement priorities, are within his executive powers, broader changes depend on cooperation from Congress, the courts, and other branches of government.

Summary: Trump's agenda reflects a mix of achievable goals and aspirational promises that highlight his priorities while testing the boundaries of presidential power. Whether these measures can be implemented swiftly—or at all—remains uncertain.

✈ Las Vegas’ Future Looks Bright Despite Challenges, Says Economist at Preview Las Vegas 2025

Southern Nevada is poised for continued economic growth and development despite facing significant challenges, according to a leading local economist. Speaking at Preview Las Vegas 2025 at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Thursday, Jeremy Aguero, principal at Applied Analysis, highlighted the region's resilience, thriving sports and entertainment sectors, and potential for transformative progress in key areas like housing, healthcare, and education.

The Power of Experience and Resilience

Aguero emphasized Southern Nevada’s unique ability to attract visitors and new residents through its unparalleled entertainment and sports offerings. Citing the success of ventures like professional hockey in the desert, he celebrated the region’s ability to defy skeptics and evolve into a thriving economic hub.

“Las Vegas has proven the doubters wrong time and again,” Aguero noted, pointing to the region’s rapid rise to prominence in areas where it was once underestimated. This resilience is now a cornerstone of the community’s identity.

Preview Las Vegas 2025: A Showcase of Growth

The Vegas Chamber’s annual networking event brought together about 1,500 participants, including local businesses, industry leaders, and policymakers, to discuss the region’s future. The event featured dozens of business booths and presentations addressing challenges and opportunities for 2025.

Aguero called on attendees to harness the same collaborative energy that transformed Las Vegas into a global sports and entertainment capital to tackle pressing issues such as homelessness and healthcare. He urged the community to imagine a future where Las Vegas could achieve world-class standards in education, healthcare, and homeownership.

“What if we measured everything we do in this community based on the value of the experience it delivers for the people and businesses here?” Aguero asked, encouraging attendees to think big about Las Vegas’ future.

Economic Momentum and Comparisons

Statistically, Las Vegas continues to perform well across multiple economic indicators, Aguero said, despite being a relatively young metropolitan area. With a population base reaching 2 million in just 53 years, the city has outpaced other growing urban centers like Orlando, Nashville, and Salt Lake City.

Las Vegas also benefits from an increasing number of residents with higher education degrees, supported by institutions like UNLV, which contribute to workforce development and innovation.

Challenges Ahead

While Southern Nevada has made impressive strides, Aguero acknowledged ongoing issues such as housing affordability, homelessness, and healthcare shortages. However, progress is being made. Healthcare providers like Intermountain Health, Cleveland Clinic, and the new West Henderson Hospital are expanding their presence, helping to address gaps in medical services.

The region’s reputation as a tourist destination also plays a role in attracting new residents, particularly affluent individuals. Events like the Super Bowl, Formula One races, and major college sports tournaments continue to elevate Las Vegas’ global profile.

Even in a challenging season for the Raiders, the team remains a draw, commanding some of the highest ticket prices in the NFL. This, Aguero said, underscores the strength of Las Vegas’ facilities and its appeal to visitors and locals alike.

Looking Ahead

Aguero stressed that decisions made in 2025 regarding critical issues like water management, education, and economic development will shape Southern Nevada’s future. He encouraged the community to continue investing in its strengths while addressing areas of need.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the choices we make here in 2025 will define us tomorrow,” Aguero concluded, urging Las Vegas to leverage its momentum and collective vision to create a brighter future.

Takeaways

  • Las Vegas continues to thrive economically, driven by its entertainment and sports sectors.

  • Addressing challenges like homelessness, housing, and healthcare could unlock even greater potential for the region.

  • The community’s collaborative spirit has been key to its success and remains critical for future growth.

Preview Las Vegas 2025 showcased the city’s promise and underscored the importance of strategic action to ensure continued prosperity.
