🌡 Southern Nevada Braces for Coldest Weather in Over Two Years

Southern Nevada is set to experience its coldest temperatures in more than two years next week, with lows potentially dipping below freezing. The National Weather Service (NWS) predicts a low of 31 degrees at Harry Reid International Airport on Tuesday morning, a temperature not seen since January 2, 2022, when it reached 28 degrees.

Colder Days Ahead

Meteorologist Ashley Nickerson explained that this cold snap is linked to a major core of frigid weather impacting the eastern United States, with some of that chill seeping into Southern Nevada. Areas like Henderson have a 50% chance of dropping to 28 degrees on Tuesday, and higher elevations are expected to see lows in the upper 20s.

The cold weather will begin over the weekend, with nighttime temperatures in the 30s on Saturday and Sunday. Highs during the day are forecast to reach the mid-50s.

MLK Day Parade Forecast

For Monday’s downtown Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, attendees should bundle up as morning temperatures will hover in the upper 30s to low 40s, accompanied by gusty winds of up to 25 mph. The afternoon high is expected to reach 55 degrees, though the wind may make it feel much colder.

Gradual Warm-Up After Tuesday

Tuesday is expected to see a high of 53 degrees, and temperatures are forecast to rise gradually throughout the rest of the week as the cold spell dissipates.

Dry Streak Nears Record Levels

While temperatures drop, the region’s historic dry streak continues. Saturday will mark the 189th consecutive day without measurable precipitation at Harry Reid International Airport, the second-longest dry spell in Las Vegas history. The record, set in 2020, stands at 240 days.

Nickerson noted that the forecast shows no significant signals of rain in the next two weeks, suggesting the dry conditions could extend well into February.

Residents should prepare for the chill by dressing warmly, especially in the mornings, and take precautions to protect outdoor plants and pets from freezing temperatures.

🏒 Golden Knights Fall to Hurricanes, Extend Slump to Four Losses in Five Games

The Vegas Golden Knights suffered a 3-2 defeat to the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina, marking their fourth loss in five games. Despite a strong start and goals from Tomas Hertl and Shea Theodore, the Knights (29-13-3) were unable to hold their lead, allowing three unanswered goals in the second half of the game.

Strong Start, But Momentum Slips

The Knights came out with energy, outshooting Carolina 13-7 in the first period, a significant improvement after their slow start against Nashville earlier in the week. However, Carolina goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov stood tall, keeping Vegas off the board until Hertl opened the scoring early in the second period.

The Hurricanes (27-16-3) capitalized on Vegas’ missteps, tying the game later in the second and pulling ahead in the third. Seth Jarvis scored twice, and Jackson Blake’s centering pass deflected off a Knights defenseman’s stick for the go-ahead goal.

Key Moments in the Loss

  1. Missed Opportunity on Penalty Shot
Keegan Kolesar had a chance to extend Vegas’ lead with a penalty shot midway through the second period but was denied by Kochetkov. Just minutes later, Jarvis tied the game, shifting momentum in Carolina’s favor.

  2. Costly Too-Many-Men Penalty
With the Knights pressing for an equalizer late in the game, a miscommunication during a goalie swap led to a too-many-men penalty with 1:19 left. The mistake forced Vegas to play the final moments at five-on-five without a goalie, squandering their chances for a comeback.

  3. Lineup Changes
The Knights opted to bench Alexander Holtz, who had played 126 consecutive games dating back to his time with the New Jersey Devils. Cole Schwindt replaced him, logging 10:29 on a line with William Karlsson and Brett Howden. Holtz has struggled this season, tallying just 10 points in 44 games.

Coach Cassidy's Perspective

Coach Bruce Cassidy noted that mistakes and missed opportunities have been magnified during the team’s recent struggles. “We’re a one-goal difference where the other team is making one more play than we are,” Cassidy said. He emphasized the need to capitalize on scoring chances and minimize errors, especially as the team continues to face tight contests.

Looking Ahead

The Knights will aim to turn their fortunes around on Saturday as they face the Chicago Blackhawks in the second leg of a back-to-back. With their recent skid, the team hopes to rediscover the consistency that has carried them to one of the best records in the league this season.

Three Takeaways:

  1. Missed Scoring Opportunities – Key chances, like Kolesar’s penalty shot, went unconverted, allowing Carolina to gain momentum.

  2. Discipline Issues – The too-many-men penalty in the final moments highlighted the need for sharper execution in high-pressure situations.

  3. Lineup Adjustments – Cole Schwindt replaced struggling Alexander Holtz, signaling potential shifts in the team’s approach moving forward.

The Knights will need to refocus quickly to end their slump and get back to their winning ways.

Donald Trump’s Second Inauguration Kicks Off with Events Amid Cold Weather and Smaller Protests

Donald Trump will return to Washington on Saturday to begin several days of events celebrating his second inauguration as president. The ceremonies come four years after his controversial departure from office, marked by the Capitol attack following his refusal to concede the 2020 election.

A Chilly Start to a Historic Inauguration

Inauguration Day on Monday will see the coldest weather in 40 years, with temperatures forcing organizers to move most outdoor events indoors, including the swearing-in ceremony. Originally planned for the West Front of the Capitol, the event will now take place in the Capitol Rotunda, which can accommodate only 600 guests, far fewer than the 250,000 initially expected.

Opera singer Christopher Macchio, set to perform the national anthem, acknowledged the advantages of an indoor venue but lamented the loss of the iconic view of a packed National Mall.

Pre-Inauguration Events

The festivities begin Saturday as Trump departs his Florida home for Washington. His only public event for the day is a reception and fireworks display at Trump National Golf Club in Sterling, Virginia. Vice President-elect JD Vance will host a Cabinet reception and dinner in Washington.

Sunday’s schedule includes a wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery and a rally at Capital One Arena, followed by a private dinner.

Inauguration Day Plans

Monday’s traditional events include a prayer service at St. John’s Episcopal Church and a tea at the White House with outgoing President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden. Trump and Biden will ride together to the Capitol, adhering to the long-standing symbolic gesture of peaceful power transfer.

After taking the oath of office, Trump will deliver his inaugural address before attending a congressional luncheon, troop review, and signing ceremony for his first official acts. The planned parade down Pennsylvania Avenue has been reimagined as an indoor event due to the frigid weather. Evening celebrations will feature three inaugural balls and performances by stars including Carrie Underwood, Jason Aldean, and Kid Rock.

Protests and Demonstrations

While smaller than the demonstrations seen during Trump’s first inauguration, protests will accompany his return to Washington. The rebranded People’s March, focusing on issues such as women’s rights, climate change, and immigration, is expected to draw 50,000 participants, a fraction of the turnout for the Women’s March in 2017.

Other protests and vigils addressing abortion, immigration, and the Israel-Hamas conflict will also take place, though they are anticipated to be less intense than those of Trump’s initial inauguration.

A Celebrity-Studded Celebration

Unlike his first inauguration, this year’s events boast a star-studded lineup. Performers include Billy Ray Cyrus, Nelly, the Village People, and Gwen Stefani, along with business icons such as Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos, and Mark Zuckerberg. These appearances underscore Trump’s influence and his connections to both pop culture and the tech world.

A New Chapter

Trump’s inauguration begins a new chapter in his political career, marked by a mix of tradition, spectacle, and controversy. As he returns to office, the ceremonies and protests reflect a deeply divided nation, with both supporters and critics looking ahead to the next four years.

🔥 Las Vegas Tourism Experts Weigh Potential Impact of Southern California Fires

As Southern California grapples with the devastating effects of widespread wildfires, questions arise about how the disaster may impact tourism in Las Vegas. With Southern Californians accounting for roughly one-third of Las Vegas visitors, experts and leaders are divided on whether the fires will cause a decline in travel or drive stressed residents to seek a brief escape in the city.

The Devastation in California

The Palisades and Eaton fires, which began on January 7, along with nearly 30 smaller blazes, have burned over 38,000 acres and destroyed more than 12,000 buildings. The scale of destruction has left many Californians focusing on recovery, with travel taking a back seat.

Two Potential Scenarios

Josh Swissman of GMA Consulting sees two possibilities:

  1. Fewer Visitors: Southern Californians may devote their resources to recovery efforts, delaying their usual trips to Las Vegas.

  2. Seeking Respite: Some residents may take short, budget-conscious trips to Las Vegas to temporarily escape the stress of rebuilding their lives.

“Vegas serves as a nearby and relatively low-cost getaway,” Swissman noted, highlighting its accessibility for those seeking brief relief.

A Resilient Tourism Industry

Despite the fires, some believe Las Vegas tourism will remain steady. Steve Hill, president of the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority, expressed optimism, stating, “We do not anticipate any significant economic effects.” Hill emphasized that the focus should remain on supporting fire victims and relief efforts.

Similarly, Amanda Belarmino of UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hospitality acknowledged that travel might not be a priority for many Southern Californians in the short term. However, she expressed confidence in Las Vegas’ resilience and the broader economic environment, which could help offset any temporary lulls.

Support from the Resort Industry

The Nevada Resort Association (NRA) highlighted the close ties between Southern Nevada and Southern California. NRA President Virginia Valentine emphasized the industry’s immediate response to the crisis, which includes:

  • Monetary donations to the Red Cross and L.A. Fire Department Foundation

  • Employee donation matching programs

  • Donation drives

  • Flexible and discounted stays for those affected

While the discounted stays were well-intentioned, some social media users criticized resorts for appearing insensitive by marketing special rates so soon after the disaster.

“Our concern is for the safety and well-being of the residents, firefighters, and first responders,” Valentine stated, adding that the resort industry will continue to support recovery efforts in collaboration with state and local leaders.

A Longer-Term Outlook

Experts agree that the full impact of the fires on Las Vegas tourism may take time to emerge. While there may be a temporary dip in visitation, the city’s proximity, affordability, and role as a convenient escape could help offset potential losses.

As recovery efforts continue in California, Las Vegas stands ready to assist its neighbors while remaining a popular destination for those seeking respite or recreation.
