🏬 BLVD: A Unique Retail and Entertainment Destination on the Las Vegas Strip

BLVD is set to redefine the shopping experience on the Las Vegas Strip, offering a mix of retail, dining, and entertainment unlike a traditional mall. Developed by Gindi Capital, the project replaces the Hawaiian Marketplace and spans an impressive 400,000 square feet, making it the largest standalone retail and entertainment complex on the Strip without a casino or hotel.

Not Your Typical Shopping Center

Designed to stand apart from conventional malls, BLVD prioritizes experiential branding and special events alongside retail. Michael Hirschfeld, vice chairman of JLL and leasing overseer for the project, emphasized that visitors won’t find the same stores seen in every mall but a curated selection of unique offerings tailored to the Strip’s dynamic atmosphere.

A Long-Awaited Vision

Plans for BLVD began in 2018 but underwent significant refinements during the pandemic, allowing developers to adapt the concept to better meet the needs of retailers and visitors. Gindi Capital, a major Strip property owner, controls nearly 2,000 linear feet of real estate from BLVD to MGM Grand.

Tenant Openings and Features

Several major retailers, including Lululemon, Abercrombie & Fitch, JD Sports, Pandora, Adidas, H&M, and Puma, have been announced as tenants. Puma launched its flagship store during the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix in November, while other retailers will open between March and May 2025, with additional openings expected through 2026.

BLVD will also feature a 120,000-square-foot rooftop dedicated to food, beverages, and events. The rooftop is designed to host 10 to 12 full-service restaurants, with confirmed tenants including In-N-Out and the Boca Raton-based pizza concept, How Ya Dough’n. Negotiations are underway to bring Italian, Mediterranean, and Mexican restaurants to the space, along with dessert options such as ice cream or gelato.

Special Events and Iconic Views

The rooftop will double as an event space, hosting performances and special gatherings. During Puma’s grand opening, BLVD featured Paris Hilton as a DJ, showcasing the venue’s potential as an entertainment hotspot.

A standout feature of the rooftop is "The Overlook," a seating area above Las Vegas Boulevard designed for relaxation and selfies. Overlooking the Strip, it provides a scenic spot to pause amid the energy of the area.

What’s Next for BLVD

With more tenant announcements expected and a 10,000-square-foot leasing area still available, BLVD continues to take shape as a one-of-a-kind destination. As its tenants begin opening their doors, BLVD is set to become a premier hub for retail, dining, and entertainment on the Las Vegas Strip, offering a fresh experience to locals and tourists alike.

🏒 Golden Knights Struggle on the Road, Fall to Blackhawks 5-3

The Vegas Golden Knights’ struggles continued Saturday as they suffered a 5-3 loss to the Chicago Blackhawks at the United Center. Tomas Hertl’s two-goal performance extended his season-high point streak to five games, but it wasn’t enough to avoid the team’s third consecutive loss, tying their season-high slump.

The Knights, now 29-14-3, have dropped five of their last six games, including being swept during their three-game road trip. Despite an early lead, they found themselves trailing 3-1 after the first period, a deficit they couldn’t overcome.

Game Highlights

The Knights started strong, with Victor Olofsson scoring on a one-timer from the right circle at 9:29 of the first period. However, Chicago responded with three goals in the final four minutes of the opening frame. Lukas Reichel and Tyler Bertuzzi scored just 40 seconds apart, and Taylor Hall added another with 18 seconds left, leaving Vegas in a hole.

Hertl rallied the team in the second period, scoring twice to tie the game 3-3. His first goal came off a breakaway, and the second was a power-play deflection of a Shea Theodore point shot.

Despite outshooting Chicago 17-3 in the second period, the Knights couldn’t hold momentum. Blackhawks defenseman Seth Jones capitalized on a Vegas turnover to score with just over a minute left in the second, restoring Chicago’s lead. Bertuzzi’s second power-play goal early in the third sealed the Knights’ fate.

Missed Opportunities

The Knights continued a troubling trend of penalties in key moments. Captain Mark Stone’s slashing penalty in the final minute, with the goaltender pulled for an extra attacker, derailed their last push. The night before, they had committed a too-many-men penalty while attempting a late-game comeback against Carolina.

Key Performances

  • Tomas Hertl: With two goals and an assist, Hertl extended his point streak to five games (four goals, five assists).

  • Shea Theodore: Theodore added two assists, extending his own point streak to four games (one goal, five assists) and bringing him within one point of his sixth consecutive 40-point season.

Road Ahead

The Knights return home to face the St. Louis Blues on Monday afternoon at T-Mobile Arena. Coach Bruce Cassidy acknowledged the need to find solutions quickly, as limited practice time during the schedule leaves the team addressing issues in-game.

Takeaways from the Loss

  1. Late Penalties Costly: Back-to-back games have seen the Knights take penalties while attempting to mount late comebacks, highlighting a lack of discipline during critical moments.

  2. Theodore’s Strong Play Continues: Despite the team’s struggles, Theodore has been a bright spot, consistently contributing offensively.

  3. Urgency to Rebound: The Knights’ slump comes at a busy point in the schedule, leaving little time for adjustments. With a game Monday, the team must find answers quickly to regain their early-season form.

The loss to the Blackhawks, the NHL’s lowest-ranked team, underscores the depth of the Knights’ current struggles. As they head back to Las Vegas, the team looks to break the skid and regain momentum.

A Presidential Tradition: Letters from Outgoing Leaders

Ronald Reagan unknowingly began a tradition when he left a congratulatory note for his successor, George H.W. Bush, in the Oval Office desk drawer. Over time, this act of goodwill became a hallmark of presidential transitions, with each outgoing president leaving a letter for the incoming one.

A Tradition Rooted in Friendship

Reagan’s note to Bush reflected their close partnership during Reagan’s two terms as president. Using lighthearted stationery featuring an elephant surrounded by turkeys, Reagan offered encouragement and reflected fondly on their time working together. This personal gesture laid the foundation for a tradition that has endured through political shifts and rivalries.

Bipartisan Well-Wishes

George H.W. Bush elevated the practice when he left office after one term, writing to Bill Clinton, the man who defeated him. In his letter, Bush expressed hope for Clinton’s success and reminded him that criticism would come but shouldn’t deter him.

Clinton, at the end of his presidency, continued the tradition, offering George W. Bush advice about the gravity and honor of the presidency. Bush, in turn, wished Barack Obama strength, comfort, and success during challenging moments, emphasizing the importance of faith, family, and the support of the nation.

Obama, despite his contentious relationship with Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, left a thoughtful note emphasizing democratic values, American leadership, and the importance of family and friends in weathering the presidency’s rough patches.

Trump’s Note to Biden

Donald Trump surprised many by continuing the tradition, even as he broke others, such as attending Joe Biden’s inauguration. Trump’s letter was reportedly handwritten and unexpectedly gracious, surprising Biden, who described it as generous but kept its contents private. Trump later acknowledged taking considerable time to craft the message.

Biden’s Unique Position

As Biden prepares to leave office, he faces a unique situation: writing a letter to his predecessor, Donald Trump, who will once again be his successor. This would mark the first time an outgoing president writes to a leader who had already served in the role.

While Biden values political traditions, the decision to write the letter remains uncertain. White House officials have not confirmed whether he will participate, leaving open the possibility that the tradition could pause in this unusual moment in history.

Historical Notes and Their Evolution

The idea of outgoing presidents leaving messages for their successors predates Reagan but wasn’t tied to congratulations or well-wishes. Early examples included practical notes, such as John Adams informing Thomas Jefferson about the horses and carriages being left for his use at the White House. Over time, these communications evolved into deeply personal reflections, offering insight, encouragement, and bipartisan support as part of the peaceful transition of power.

This enduring tradition reflects the shared responsibility of those who have occupied the nation’s highest office, serving as a reminder that the presidency transcends political divisions and remains a cornerstone of democracy.

🚘 Boring Company’s Vision Grows with Vegas Loop Westgate Launch

The Boring Company’s Vegas Loop, an underground transit system designed to improve connectivity in Las Vegas, is continuing its expansion with the opening of the Westgate station. The station, set to open to the public on Saturday, will enhance access between the Westgate resort and the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Details of the New Station

The Westgate station is located above ground near the resort’s valet and self-parking garages. It becomes the second station outside the convention center to connect to the Vegas Loop, following the Resorts World station, which opened in 2022.

The Vegas Loop began operations in 2021 with three stations at the convention center, providing a fast and efficient way for attendees to move around the campus. The system expanded in 2023 with the addition of the Riviera Station. The new Westgate station continues this trend, offering a convenient transportation option for visitors traveling between the resort and the convention center.

Ongoing Expansion Projects

The Vegas Loop is undergoing significant growth, with several new tunnels and stations in development. Current projects include a route connecting Encore and a University Center Loop, which will link the area near UNLV and the Thomas & Mack Center to the convention center’s Silver Lot. This extension will feature stops at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas and nearby properties.

Future plans include a tunnel along Tropicana Avenue that will connect Paradise Road to the South Strip. This route will add stations at Allegiant Stadium, the Tropicana site, and the Athletics’ planned ballpark.

Future Vision for the Loop

When fully completed, the Vegas Loop aims to cover 68 miles, with 104 stations capable of moving up to 90,000 passengers per hour. The system uses Tesla vehicles to transport passengers through the tunnels. While rides within the convention center are free, stations outside the campus, including Westgate, will require a fee.

The Vegas Loop is part of a broader effort to position Las Vegas as a hub of innovation and sustainability. By offering a fast, efficient, and eco-friendly transportation option, the loop helps alleviate traffic congestion and improve travel for tourists and residents alike.

The system continues to grow with each new station, connecting major resorts, entertainment venues, and other attractions throughout the city. With ongoing developments, the Vegas Loop is steadily transforming the way people navigate Las Vegas.

🔐 Supreme Court Upholds TikTok Ban Without Sale, App Faces Immediate Shutdown

The popular video-sharing app TikTok faces an uncertain future in the United States after the Supreme Court unanimously upheld a federal law that bans the app unless its China-based parent company, ByteDance, sells it to an approved buyer. The ruling, issued Friday, highlights concerns about TikTok’s ties to China and the potential national security risks posed by the platform’s data collection practices.

Immediate Consequences for TikTok

TikTok has warned that it will have to “go dark” starting January 19 unless the Biden administration provides assurances that the law won’t be enforced. This would prevent the app from being downloaded or updated, rendering it obsolete over time. The Justice Department has stated that while the app may remain functional for existing users, new downloads will be prohibited, and updates will no longer be available.

TikTok released a statement Friday expressing frustration over the lack of clarity from the White House and the Department of Justice, saying it needs a definitive commitment to prevent enforcement of the law.

Political Reactions and Context

The decision comes amid bipartisan concern in Washington over TikTok’s Chinese ownership and its implications for U.S. security. Congress passed the law in April, and President Biden signed it shortly after. The legislation culminates years of debate over TikTok, which has been accused of serving as a tool for Beijing to access sensitive user data or manipulate content. ByteDance has denied these allegations, insisting there is no evidence that the Chinese government has accessed American user data or influenced the app’s algorithm.

The Supreme Court acknowledged the difficulty of balancing free speech concerns with national security priorities. The justices concluded that Congress’s decision to mandate a sale of TikTok’s U.S. operations was a reasonable step to mitigate risks tied to data collection by a foreign adversary.

TikTok’s Ownership and Legal Challenges

ByteDance has so far refused to sell TikTok’s U.S. operations. Despite this, several investors, including former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and businessman Frank McCourt, have expressed interest in acquiring the app. McCourt’s consortium has reportedly submitted a proposal to ByteDance, though the company has yet to entertain any formal offers.

TikTok has argued that the law infringes on First Amendment rights, but the Supreme Court dismissed this claim. Lower courts also upheld the law, with a three-judge panel ruling against TikTok in December, prompting the company’s appeal.

Broader Implications for Users and Businesses

The ruling has sparked concerns among content creators and businesses that rely on TikTok to connect with audiences. Many worry about the potential loss of income and visibility if the app is shut down. Digital rights groups have also criticized the decision, calling it a blow to free expression for millions of users.

TikTok’s potential shutdown could leave a significant gap in the social media landscape, particularly given its immense popularity among younger users. With over 170 million users in the U.S., the app has become a cornerstone of digital culture and marketing.

Looking Ahead

It remains unclear whether TikTok’s parent company will reconsider selling its U.S. operations or if the Biden administration will step in to delay enforcement of the law. While the law allows for a 90-day reprieve if progress toward a sale is made, no concrete steps in that direction have been reported.

The Supreme Court ruling underscores the growing tensions between the U.S. and China over technology and data security, marking a critical moment in the debate over how to manage the risks associated with foreign-owned tech platforms. For now, TikTok’s future in the U.S. hangs in the balance, with the app potentially disappearing from app stores and new users’ devices starting this weekend.
