🚒 Southern Nevada Firefighters Return After Assisting in California Wildfire Efforts

Forty-five firefighters from Southern Nevada fire departments are set to return home Thursday after aiding in efforts to battle wildfires in Southern California. The teams, drawn from the Clark County Fire Department, Las Vegas Fire Department, and Henderson Fire Department, provided critical support to contain the Eaton Fire near Pasadena and the Palisades Fire.
Two Teams, Vital Missions
The first team, a 21-member group deployed on January 9 to the Eaton Fire, included four fire engines, one water tender, two battalion chiefs, a mechanic, and a logistics team member. The second team of 24 members deployed on January 8 to the Palisades Fire, equipped with five engines, two battalion chiefs, one mechanic, and one fire equipment technician.
Both teams performed a variety of tasks, including fighting structure fires, protecting undamaged homes, extinguishing ember-driven spot fires, and maintaining water lines to support wildland fire crews.
The Eaton Fire team is scheduled to return to the training center at 4425 W. Tropicana Avenue at around 6 p.m., with the Palisades Fire team expected to arrive later in the evening.
Support Beyond Firefighting
In addition to combating flames, the firefighters played an essential role in helping affected communities recover. Over recent days, they escorted homeowners back onto their properties, assisted in searches for valuables among the ash and debris, and helped residents return to homes that had been without power for more than a week.
Statewide Contributions
The Southern Nevada teams were part of a larger network of firefighting personnel and emergency responders from across Nevada who joined the effort to combat the devastating wildfires in California. Their return marks the end of a critical mission that not only focused on firefighting but also supported community recovery and resilience.
These dedicated first responders now return home, reflecting the vital role Southern Nevada plays in aiding neighboring regions during times of crisis.

🏒 Golden Knights’ William Karlsson Out Week-to-Week with Lower-Body Injury

Golden Knights center William Karlsson is sidelined week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the team announced Thursday. The 32-year-old, who has tallied 18 points in 38 games this season, has been held scoreless in his last seven contests.
Karlsson was given Tuesday off from practice in hopes of recovering, but his condition didn’t improve as expected, coach Bruce Cassidy said. His absence leaves a notable gap in the team’s lineup as they prepare for a challenging stretch of games.
Injury History and Impact
Karlsson previously missed the first eight games of the season after aggravating a hamstring injury during the playoffs. It remains unclear if his current injury is related to the earlier one.
The timing of the injury raises questions about Karlsson’s availability for the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off tournament, scheduled for Feb. 12-20 in Montreal and Boston, where he is set to represent Team Sweden.
“He’s obviously a big loss for us,” said right wing Victor Olofsson. “Other guys need to step up and take on more responsibility. We’ve been handling injuries all year, and we’ll need to do it again.”
Lineup Adjustments
With Karlsson out, the Golden Knights have called up center Tanner Laczynski and right wing Brendan Brisson from their AHL affiliate in Henderson. Brisson, the team’s 2020 first-round draft pick, has yet to register a point in seven NHL appearances this season.
The Knights are also dealing with additional uncertainty, as forward Brett Howden, who missed practice Tuesday due to illness, is considered a game-time decision for Thursday’s matchup against the St. Louis Blues.
Upcoming Challenges
The Golden Knights face a demanding schedule, starting with back-to-back road games against the Blues on Thursday and the Dallas Stars on Friday at American Airlines Center.
Karlsson’s absence will test the Knights’ depth as they continue to navigate a season already impacted by injuries. The team will rely on contributions from its younger players and call-ups to maintain their momentum in the competitive Western Conference.

On January 23, 2025, President Donald Trump signed an executive order mandating the declassification of all remaining government records related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert F. Kennedy, and civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. This move aims to address longstanding public interest and speculation surrounding these pivotal events in American history.
The executive order directs the Director of National Intelligence to develop a plan within 15 days to release the JFK assassination files and within 45 days for the RFK and MLK Jr. files. The intent is to provide transparency and potentially clarify decades-old questions about these incidents.
This decision comes after previous administrations postponed the full release of these records. In 1992, Congress enacted a law requiring the disclosure of all JFK assassination-related records by October 2017, unless the president certified that continued postponement was necessary due to identifiable harm. Both the Trump and Biden administrations authorized delays, citing national security concerns.
Notably, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the son of the late senator and President Trump's nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, has been a proponent of releasing these documents. He has previously expressed skepticism about the official accounts of his uncle's assassination, suggesting possible CIA involvement—a claim the agency has consistently denied.
The declassification of these records is anticipated to shed light on the circumstances surrounding these assassinations and address various conspiracy theories that have persisted over the years. Historians, researchers, and the public alike await the release, hoping for greater clarity and understanding of these significant historical events.

🎰 A Breakdown of Resort Fees on the Las Vegas Strip

Resort fees have become a standard and often controversial part of staying in Las Vegas. Originally introduced to cover amenities like pool access, fitness centers, and Wi-Fi, these mandatory nightly charges now add a significant cost to hotel stays, with rates ranging from $44 to nearly $57 per night for Strip properties.
Why Resort Fees Are Controversial
While industry defenders argue that resort fees help cover services that enhance a guest’s experience, critics see them as a hidden cost that inflates the price of a hotel stay. Casinos often waive these fees for big spenders and loyalty program members, but for the average traveler, resort fees can be an unwelcome surprise.
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) recently implemented new regulations requiring hotels to disclose resort fees upfront in advertised rates. While the FTC has not banned resort fees outright, this move aims to make pricing more transparent.
Highest Resort Fees on the Strip
Fontainebleau Las Vegas: $56.69 per night
The highest resort fee on the Strip is charged by Fontainebleau, a $3.7 billion property that opened in December 2023, offering more than 3,600 luxury rooms.
Wynn and Encore: $55 per night
Known for their opulence, Wynn and Encore reflect their luxury status with a $55 daily resort fee.
MGM Resorts Properties: $55 per night
Bellagio, The Cosmopolitan, Aria, and the non-gaming Vdara also charge $55 per night.
Caesars Entertainment Properties: $54.95 per night
Caesars Palace, Cromwell, Paris, and Planet Hollywood charge slightly less, at $54.95 per night.
Mid-Tier Resort Fees
$50 per night
Properties like MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Park MGM, The Venetian, and Palazzo all charge $50.
Caesars’ Flamingo, Harrah’s, Horseshoe, The LINQ, and Nobu hotels also fall into this tier at $49.95, alongside Treasure Island, Sahara, and The Strat.
$45 per night
MGM-operated hotels like Excalibur, Luxor, and New York-New York charge $45 nightly.
Lowest Resort Fees on the Strip
Circus Circus: $44.22 per night
A budget-friendly option, Circus Circus offers the second-lowest resort fee on the Strip.
Casino Royale (Best Western): $0 per night
The only property on the Strip that does not charge a resort fee, making it a rare exception.
Off-Strip Resort Fees
For travelers staying near the Strip, resort fees remain a factor:
Rio: $56.69 per night
Virgin Hotels: $48 per night
Palms: $47.62 per night
Silver Sevens: $46 per night
Westgate: $44.99 per night
OYO: $44.95 per night
The Orleans: $40.99 per night
Gold Coast: $39.99 per night
What Guests Need to Know
As resort fees continue to shape the cost of a Las Vegas trip, it’s essential for visitors to factor these charges into their budgets. While some properties justify the fees by offering robust amenities, others may leave guests feeling underwhelmed by what they receive in return.
For those looking to avoid resort fees altogether, options like Casino Royale on the Strip or carefully selected off-Strip locations provide alternatives in a city where transparency in pricing is becoming increasingly prioritized.
