✈️ Las Vegas’ Harry Reid Airport Ranked 12th Worst for Flight Delays

Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas experienced average flight delays of 15 minutes and 14 seconds in 2023, placing it as the 12th worst among major U.S. airports for on-time performance. The data, compiled by Sudoku.com.au, was based on statistics from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics and published in a report issued Wednesday.

A Nationwide Perspective

The report analyzed delays at U.S. airports between January and December 2023, ranking each based on average delay times. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida recorded the longest delays, with flights running an average of 22 minutes and 44 seconds behind schedule. It was followed by Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport in San Juan, Puerto Rico (21:01), and three additional Florida airports: Orlando International Airport (19:41), Miami International Airport (18:55), and Palm Beach International Airport (17:35).

Harry Reid International’s average delay of 15:14 places it near the middle of the list of poorly performing airports but highlights ongoing challenges with flight punctuality.

Causes of Delays at Harry Reid International

Representatives from Harry Reid International have previously attributed many of the airport’s delays to late-arriving flights from other cities, particularly those impacted by severe weather. Given Las Vegas’ role as a major connection point and tourism hub, disruptions elsewhere in the U.S. ripple into the airport’s flight schedule.

Airports with the Best Performance

On the opposite end of the spectrum, the airports with the best on-time departure records in 2023 had significantly shorter delays. The top performers were:

  • Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport, Hawaii: 5 minutes, 36 seconds

  • Piedmont Triad International Airport, Greensboro, North Carolina: 5 minutes, 47 seconds

  • Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, Alaska: 6 minutes, 11 seconds

  • Portland International Airport, Oregon: 6 minutes, 16 seconds

  • Lihue Airport, Kauai, Hawaii: 6 minutes, 16 seconds

The strong performance of these airports reflects their smaller size, lighter traffic, and in some cases, favorable geographic and weather conditions.

A Broader Look at Travel Challenges

Flight delays are a persistent challenge in the U.S. air travel system, often caused by a combination of factors, including weather disruptions, air traffic congestion, and operational inefficiencies. Airports in regions prone to extreme weather, such as Florida, tend to rank poorly for delays, as seen with the prominence of Florida airports in the worst-performing list.

For Las Vegas, as one of the busiest tourist destinations in the country, maintaining on-time departures is crucial to providing a positive experience for the millions of visitors who pass through each year.

🏒 Knights’ Comeback Bid Falls Short in 4-3 Loss to Stars

The Vegas Golden Knights suffered a 4-3 loss to the Dallas Stars on Friday at the American Airlines Center in Dallas. A second-period collapse, where the Knights allowed three goals, ultimately proved decisive. Despite late opportunities to tie the game, including a dramatic save by Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger in the final seconds, the Knights couldn’t overcome the deficit.

With the loss, the Golden Knights (30-15-4) split their back-to-back road games after defeating St. Louis 4-2 on Thursday. While the win snapped a four-game losing streak, Vegas has now dropped to 2-6-1 in its past nine games.

Second-Period Struggles

The Knights started strong, with Jack Eichel scoring a power-play goal at 4:04 of the first period. However, Dallas quickly responded with a power-play goal from Roope Hintz at 6:19, leveling the score.

The second period was where the game slipped away for Vegas. Dallas dominated, outshooting the Knights 15-5 and overwhelming them in scoring chances (16-5) and high-danger opportunities (5-2). Jason Robertson scored twice for the Stars, and Jamie Benn added another during a 1:36 stretch that highlighted Vegas’ struggles in five-on-five play.

Defenseman Shea Theodore managed to tie the game briefly at 2-2 with a power-play goal at 8:57, but the Knights couldn’t sustain momentum. By the end of the period, Dallas held a 4-2 lead that Vegas would not overcome.

Eichel, who scored his second goal of the night in the third period, acknowledged the team’s struggles in the middle frame, particularly in front of their own net. Goaltender Adin Hill faced 27 shots and allowed four goals, marking his third straight start in which he has given up at least four goals.

Missed Chances in the Final Minutes

Despite their second-period woes, the Knights had multiple chances to force overtime in the game’s closing moments. Mark Stone, who contributed three assists, had a chance at an open net in the final minute, but Stars center Colin Blackwell made a diving poke check to prevent the opportunity.

In another dramatic moment with 22.3 seconds left, Oettinger robbed Pavel Dorofeyev’s backhand-to-forehand move with a spectacular glove save, denying Vegas a chance to even the score.

Head coach Bruce Cassidy praised Oettinger’s effort but lamented the team’s inability to generate consistent high-danger chances, citing a lack of willingness to get inside the Dallas defense.

Key Takeaways

  1. Brett Howden Returns
Center Brett Howden rejoined the lineup after missing Thursday’s game due to illness. Playing alongside Tanner Pearson and Tanner Laczynski on the fourth line, Howden had a strong showing in the faceoff circle, winning seven of eight draws, though he finished with a minus-1 rating in 11:36 of ice time.

Cassidy opted to move Alexander Holtz out of the lineup, making him a healthy scratch for the second time in three games.

  2. Shea Theodore’s Hot Streak
Theodore continues to produce at an elite level, contributing a power-play goal in the loss. The defenseman now has 11 points in his past seven games, further bolstering his case as one of the league’s top blue-liners this season. With 44 points on the year, Theodore is inching closer to surpassing his career high of 52 points set in the 2021-22 season.

  3. Upcoming Challenges
The Knights will return to T-Mobile Arena for a tough three-game homestand before the 4 Nations Face-Off. They’ll face the defending Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers on Sunday, followed by a rematch with the Stars on Tuesday. The surprising Columbus Blue Jackets, one of the league’s hottest teams, will close out the homestand on Thursday.

Looking Ahead

The loss to Dallas highlights the Knights’ need to address inconsistencies, particularly in five-on-five play, and improve their ability to weather offensive surges from opponents. With Florida and Dallas looming on the schedule, Vegas will need to quickly regroup to avoid losing further ground in the standings.

Circa Hosts Presidential Event as Trump Spotlights Economic Priorities

Circa co-owner Derek Stevens learned on Wednesday that President Donald Trump planned to visit Las Vegas on Saturday. It wasn’t until Thursday afternoon, however, that Stevens was informed his hotel had been chosen as the venue for the high-profile stop.

Stevens, a key figure in downtown Las Vegas, received the news through Sigal Chattah, Nevada’s Republican National Committeewoman, who facilitated contact with Nevada GOP Chairman Michael McDonald. The two helped coordinate with Trump’s advance team, which arrived at Circa within minutes to finalize arrangements.

The event, hosted at an undisclosed location within the hotel due to security concerns, will be one of the most significant political gatherings in downtown Las Vegas in recent memory. Since its opening in 2020, Circa has become a key player in the downtown area, but hosting a sitting president marks a new milestone for the property.

A Strategic Opportunity

While Stevens has not been guaranteed any one-on-one time with Trump, he’s prepared to make the most of any opportunity to speak with the president. Stevens plans to advocate for the elimination of the sports-betting excise tax and an increase in the slot-jackpot reporting threshold from $1,200 to $5,000. He believes these changes would significantly reduce regulatory burdens and improve efficiency for casinos across the country, including his own properties, which include the D Las Vegas and Golden Gate.

Stevens, known for maintaining a largely apolitical public persona, said his decision to host the event was driven by the potential benefits for his employees and the broader Las Vegas community. He emphasized the importance of the president’s message, which includes a focus on eliminating taxes on tips—a proposal that has widespread appeal in the hospitality industry.

Downtown Las Vegas in the Spotlight

The event at Circa represents a significant moment for downtown Las Vegas. Jonathan Jossel, CEO of the nearby Plaza Hotel, praised Trump’s decision to visit the area, calling it a proud moment for the neighborhood. Trump’s focus on worker-friendly policies, such as the proposed elimination of tip taxes, resonates with a wide audience in Las Vegas, where the hospitality and gaming industries play such a vital role in the economy.

Trump’s visit comes during the early days of his second term and follows stops in disaster-stricken areas of North Carolina and Los Angeles. His speech at Circa is expected to highlight his administration’s efforts to support workers and businesses while addressing key issues affecting the local and national economy.

A Momentous Week for Las Vegas

Stevens acknowledged the magnitude of hosting a presidential event at Circa, calling it a significant moment for both the property and downtown Las Vegas as a whole. He described the week as one of the most pivotal in recent political history and an opportunity to showcase the city’s importance on the national stage.

The excitement extends beyond Circa, with local leaders and residents anticipating the president’s visit as a sign of downtown Las Vegas’ growing prominence. Trump’s message, which includes a focus on economic reform and worker support, is expected to draw a diverse crowd and ignite conversations about the future of the hospitality industry in Nevada and beyond.
