🏈 Pete Carroll Returns to NFL as Raiders Head Coach

Pete Carroll, one of the most successful coaches in NFL history, was introduced as the new head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders on Monday, marking his return to the NFL sidelines. After stepping away from coaching to spend time with his family and enjoy watching his grandchildren pursue their passions—including football—Carroll’s competitive spirit ultimately brought him back to the game he loves.
The 73-year-old coach, known for his passionate energy and ability to build winning teams, described his return as a pursuit of his lifelong passion for football and the challenge of rebuilding a storied franchise. Carroll, who led the Seattle Seahawks to a Super Bowl victory and multiple playoff appearances during his tenure, now takes on the task of guiding the Raiders back to prominence.
While speaking at the Raiders’ facility in Henderson, Carroll expressed excitement about the opportunity and the potential of the organization, highlighting the strong foundation of talent and leadership in place. He emphasized his eagerness to work alongside the team’s new general manager, John Spytek, and praised the vision of team owner Mark Davis.
John Spytek Joins as General Manager
John Spytek, 44, was also introduced as the Raiders’ new general manager during Monday’s event. Spytek, who brings nearly a decade of front-office experience with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, played a key role in building the team that won Super Bowl LV. His expertise in player evaluation and roster construction is expected to complement Carroll’s coaching philosophy as they work together to shape the Raiders’ future.
Spytek, who had interviewed for general manager roles with other teams in the past, said he was drawn to the Raiders’ iconic legacy and the opportunity to work in Las Vegas. He called his new role a “dream come true” but stressed that his ultimate goal is to help the organization achieve sustained success on the field.
A Legacy of Success
Carroll’s hiring signals a new era for the Raiders, a franchise known for its storied history and passionate fanbase. Carroll, who boasts a career record of 163-114-1 in the NFL, brings a wealth of experience and a reputation for creating winning cultures. His tenure with the Seahawks was defined by defensive dominance, creative offensive schemes, and a knack for developing talent, including quarterback Russell Wilson and the famed "Legion of Boom" defense.
Carroll’s ability to connect with players and foster a sense of unity within his teams is expected to be a cornerstone of his approach with the Raiders. Las Vegas has a strong core of players, including defensive end Maxx Crosby and left tackle Kolton Miller, both of whom were present at Monday’s press conference. Their presence signals buy-in from key leaders on the roster as the team begins this new chapter.
Building for the Future
Carroll and Spytek inherit a Raiders team that has struggled to find consistency in recent years. Despite flashes of potential, the team has faced challenges in a highly competitive AFC West that includes perennial contenders like the Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers. Carroll’s leadership and Spytek’s roster-building skills will be critical in navigating these challenges and creating a competitive, cohesive team.
The Raiders are also poised to make significant moves in the offseason, with salary cap flexibility and the possibility of key roster additions through free agency and the NFL Draft. Carroll’s proven ability to develop young talent and Spytek’s track record of identifying impact players will be crucial as they work to build a team capable of contending for a playoff spot and beyond.
Excitement in Las Vegas
The introduction of Carroll and Spytek has generated excitement among Raiders fans, who are eager to see the team return to its winning ways. Carroll’s passion for the game and his commitment to fostering a culture of hard work and resilience were evident during his remarks. He spoke about the shared vision he has with Spytek and Davis, emphasizing the team’s collective determination to bring success to Las Vegas.
As the offseason begins, Carroll and Spytek face the task of evaluating the current roster, addressing key areas of need, and preparing for a pivotal season ahead. Their partnership marks a fresh start for the Raiders and an opportunity to restore the franchise’s reputation as one of the NFL’s elite organizations.

President Donald Trump energized House Republicans on Monday during their annual policy retreat, held at his Trump National Doral Miami resort. Using the setting to emphasize his influence over the party, Trump delivered a speech reflecting on his administration’s first week while urging lawmakers to unite behind his key priorities, particularly border security and immigration enforcement.
Trump, whose second term began with a focus on immigration crackdowns, touted recent victories, including his weekend showdown with Colombia over deportation flights. His administration had threatened tariffs and visa restrictions, prompting Colombia to agree to accept deported migrants without restrictions. This diplomatic victory set the tone for the retreat, where Trump encouraged Republicans to use their current control of Washington to enact their broader legislative agenda.
With total control of Congress and the White House, Republicans are navigating significant policy negotiations. They face a March 14 deadline to pass a spending bill to keep the federal government funded, while also working on a budget blueprint that will underpin their priorities, including tax cuts, fossil fuel development, and border security measures. Speaker Mike Johnson has set a goal of finalizing the budget framework in early February to expedite progress on the party’s legislative goals.
Border Security as a Central Priority
Immigration and border security remain central themes for Trump and congressional Republicans. Trump emphasized the importance of strengthening the southern border, framing it as a cornerstone of his presidency. His focus on this issue overshadowed other economic concerns, such as inflation, which he argued were less directly under his control.
Republicans are exploring ways to advance their immigration policies, with some lawmakers suggesting that border security and defense funding be prioritized in a separate bill to avoid potential delays. Others have proposed combining these measures with tax policy changes in a single legislative package. Regardless of the approach, Trump and party leaders stressed the need for unity to navigate their slim majorities in both chambers.
Policy Proposals and Budget Negotiations
Republicans aim to pass sweeping reforms that include extending and expanding tax cuts implemented during Trump’s first term. These include exempting tipped wages and Social Security payments from income taxes, a proposal championed by Trump as a way to provide financial relief to seniors and workers in service industries.
To offset the cost of their priorities, Republicans are considering changes to entitlement programs, such as introducing work requirements for Medicaid recipients. While these proposals are likely to face resistance from Democrats, Republicans argue that fiscal discipline is necessary to sustain long-term economic growth.
Democrats, meanwhile, have been quick to criticize the Republican agenda. House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries labeled the GOP’s efforts a “contract against America,” arguing that their policies would disproportionately benefit the wealthy while harming working families, seniors, and veterans.
Momentum from Early Wins
Republicans at the retreat also celebrated Trump’s recent success in the diplomatic standoff with Colombia over deportation flights. Lawmakers highlighted this as an example of Trump’s tough stance on immigration and his ability to deliver results quickly. The agreement with Colombia has been portrayed as a major victory, signaling the administration’s commitment to holding other nations accountable for accepting deported migrants.
The victory resonated with attendees, as it reinforced Trump’s broader narrative of restoring American strength and sovereignty. Lawmakers noted that Trump’s firm approach to immigration would remain a central theme of his administration’s agenda moving forward.
Call for Republican Unity
Trump closed his remarks by urging House Republicans to remain united as they tackle their ambitious legislative agenda. Acknowledging the challenges of navigating a narrow majority, he emphasized the importance of working together to achieve their goals. Trump’s message resonated with attendees, who expressed optimism about the party’s ability to deliver on its promises.
Despite the challenges ahead, the mood at the retreat was buoyant. Republicans see their current majority and Trump’s leadership as an opportunity to enact transformative policies, from border security to tax reform. The coming weeks will test their ability to translate this momentum into legislative success.

➰Las Vegas Defends Oversight of Boring Co.’s Vegas Loop Amid Criticism

Las Vegas officials are addressing recent criticisms surrounding the oversight of the Boring Co.’s Vegas Loop, a privately funded transportation project aimed at revolutionizing transit in the city. A recent ProPublica article, published in the Las Vegas Review-Journal, raised concerns about regulatory lapses, workplace safety violations, and the potential influence of billionaire Elon Musk, owner of the Boring Co., on regulatory processes. However, local leaders argue that the project is undergoing proper scrutiny and meeting safety and permitting standards.
The Vegas Loop, which currently operates at the Las Vegas Convention Center, is designed as a point-to-point transportation system using Tesla vehicles in underground tunnels. The project, chosen by the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) in 2019, was selected for its lower cost—$52.5 million—compared to alternatives like monorails, elevated roadways, and gondolas. With plans to expand to major destinations such as Harry Reid International Airport and Allegiant Stadium, the project has sparked intense public and regulatory interest.
Claims of Limited Oversight
The ProPublica article pointed to workplace safety issues cited during the Vegas Loop’s construction and suggested that the project has not faced the same regulatory scrutiny as federally funded transportation projects. Because the Vegas Loop is privately financed, it is exempt from federal vetting and environmental processes that typically delay construction. Such processes would only apply if the system were to cross federally regulated infrastructure, such as highways or airports.
The article also questioned whether Musk’s influence, stemming from his ties to the Trump administration, played a role in bypassing oversight for the Vegas Loop. These claims have been dismissed by LVCVA CEO Steve Hill, who maintains that the project is subject to the same permitting and entitlement processes as any other privately funded development in Clark County and Las Vegas.
Safety and Regulatory Measures in Place
Oversight of the Vegas Loop is defined by a franchise agreement between Clark County and the Boring Co., signed in 2021. The 61-page document outlines requirements for fire safety, permitting, and business licensing, though it does not include specific environmental regulations. Clark County retains the authority to halt construction if the Boring Co. fails to comply with the agreement.
Hill pointed to the delayed opening of the Westgate Station as evidence of proper regulatory enforcement. The station and its connecting tunnel remained closed for months due to unresolved fire safety concerns, only opening after additional safety measures were implemented. These measures included upgrading fire detection systems, placing emergency response vehicles in tunnels, and ensuring driver training and tunnel monitoring.
Clark County officials, including Commissioner Jim Gibson, have expressed confidence in the regulatory process. They acknowledge that the Vegas Loop, as the first system of its kind, presents unique challenges that require collaboration between the Boring Co., local administrators, and fire departments. Gibson emphasized that public safety remains the top priority as the system expands.
Progress and Expansion Plans
The Vegas Loop has seen significant ridership success since its opening at the Las Vegas Convention Center in 2021, serving over three million passengers with minimal incidents. The next phase of expansion includes stations at Encore, the University Center near UNLV, and additional connections to the resort corridor. Future plans envision a sprawling 68-mile system with 104 stations, capable of moving 90,000 passengers per hour at full capacity.
However, these ambitious goals hinge on resolving outstanding safety and permitting issues. Tunnel extensions to Allegiant Stadium, the planned Athletics ballpark, and the South Strip are among the next priorities. County officials have stated that permits for several of these lines have been submitted but remain on hold until all safety questions are addressed.
Stress tests conducted in 2021 exceeded the 4,400 passengers per hour initially promised in the Boring Co.’s contract with the LVCVA, but officials admit the system’s full capacity won’t be verified until the entire network is operational.
Collaboration with the City of Las Vegas
In addition to county oversight, the Vegas Loop requires approvals from the city of Las Vegas for its planned downtown connections. Proposed routes include linking the Strat to Circa’s Garage Mahal. City officials have yet to issue permits for these segments, citing the need for further meetings and collaboration with fire prevention teams.
Ensuring consistency between the city’s and county’s fire safety standards is a critical goal for the project. Officials believe a unified approach will streamline the permitting process and enhance public safety.
Looking Ahead
As the Vegas Loop progresses, local officials remain optimistic about its potential to alleviate congestion in the resort corridor and transform transportation in Las Vegas. While acknowledging that the project has faced challenges, they argue that oversight measures are adequate and evolving to meet the demands of this innovative system.
With millions of passengers already served and plans to expand to high-traffic destinations, the Vegas Loop represents a bold vision for the future of urban transit. Its success, however, will depend on continued collaboration between the Boring Co. and local regulators to address safety and operational concerns as the system grows.
