👮‍♂️ Las Vegas Police Expand ICE Notification Policy Following New Federal Immigration Law

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has expanded its Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) notification policy to include additional criminal charges, aligning with a new immigration law signed by former President Donald Trump. The changes come as the Trump administration continues its crackdown on illegal immigration and increases deportation efforts nationwide.

LVMPD originally posted its previous ICE notification policy on social media as a reminder on January 21, stating that officers would notify ICE if a foreign-born individual was arrested and charged with violent felonies, domestic violence, or driving under the influence. However, the updated policy, shared Friday, now includes additional crimes that would trigger an ICE notification, such as burglary, theft, larceny, petit larceny, and assault on a law enforcement officer.

Under the revised guidelines, LVMPD’s detention services division will notify ICE when a foreign-born individual is booked into custody and again upon their release, provided they are accused of any of the specified crimes.

The Impact of the Laken Riley Act

The policy changes follow the signing of the Laken Riley Act, a federal immigration bill aimed at detaining immigrants who are unlawfully in the U.S. and have been arrested on suspicion of crimes such as burglary, theft, and shoplifting. The act mandates that the Department of Homeland Security detain individuals who meet these criteria to prevent further incidents involving undocumented immigrants who have committed serious offenses.

The law was named in honor of Laken Riley, a 22-year-old nursing student from Georgia who was tragically killed in February 2024. Her murder sparked national attention after it was revealed that her killer, Jose Antonio Ibarra, was an undocumented immigrant who had been previously detained near El Paso, Texas, in 2022 but was released to await immigration court proceedings. Ibarra was later convicted of murder in November 2024.

The case became a rallying point for stricter immigration enforcement, culminating in the passage of the Laken Riley Act.

What Has Changed and What Remains the Same

While the expanded policy broadens the list of criminal offenses requiring ICE notification, LVMPD has maintained its stance on limiting local law enforcement involvement in direct immigration enforcement. As outlined in both the previous and updated versions of the policy, Metro officers will not actively detain or arrest individuals solely based on their immigration status.

LVMPD clarified that Nevada peace officers have the authority to assist federal agencies in enforcing certain laws but will not engage in activities such as stopping, questioning, or arresting individuals based on their undocumented status. The department emphasized that officers would not place immigration holds on individuals solely for being in the country illegally.

Instead, the primary role of LVMPD remains focused on sharing criminal intelligence, particularly in cases involving transnational organized crime and international terrorism. In those situations, the department will coordinate with ICE and other federal agencies to address larger threats to public safety.

Broader Implications

The expanded ICE notification policy has sparked conversations about the balance between public safety and immigration enforcement. Supporters argue that increased coordination with ICE will help prevent crimes committed by undocumented individuals, citing the tragedy of Laken Riley as a key example of why stricter measures are necessary. However, critics warn that expanding ICE notifications could lead to fear and distrust among immigrant communities, making them less likely to report crimes or cooperate with law enforcement.

The new policy also reflects the ongoing national debate over local law enforcement’s role in federal immigration matters. While some states and cities have adopted “sanctuary” policies to limit cooperation with ICE, others have strengthened their collaboration, particularly under federal directives aimed at increasing deportations.

As the policy takes effect, its success and impact will likely be measured by its ability to strike a balance between enforcing the law and maintaining trust within local communities.

🏒 Golden Knights Focus on Locking Down Goaltender Adin Hill After Completing Early Offseason Moves

The Golden Knights handled much of their offseason business well ahead of schedule this year, securing key players before the start of free agency on July 1. General manager Kelly McCrimmon ensured the team’s stability by signing four important players to contract extensions: center Brett Howden, right wing Keegan Kolesar, and defensemen Brayden McNabb and Shea Theodore. All four were set to become unrestricted free agents this summer but are now locked in.

However, one critical position remains uncertain: goaltender. Both Stanley Cup-winning starter Adin Hill and backup Ilya Samsonov are set to hit free agency this offseason, a situation further emphasized when former Knights goaltender Logan Thompson—traded to the Washington Capitals on June 29—signed a six-year, $35.1 million extension with his new team on Monday.

Hill, at 28 years old, would be one of the top goaltenders available on the market if he doesn’t sign an extension before free agency begins. His performance this season, along with his contributions to the Knights’ Stanley Cup run, has given Vegas plenty of reasons to try and retain him. His most recent 33-save victory against the Florida Panthers on Sunday rekindled memories of his dominant performance in the 2023 Stanley Cup Final, where he was instrumental in helping the Knights capture the title.

Hill, reflecting on his game against Florida, acknowledged the physical nature of the contest and praised his team’s defensive support around the net.

A Proven Winner with Room to Negotiate

Hill’s current two-year, $9.8 million contract, which he signed after the Knights’ Stanley Cup victory, is in its final season. The contract was an indication of the team’s trust in his abilities, and that trust was reinforced last postseason when Hill was promoted to the starting net for Game 5 of the first-round series against the Dallas Stars. At that point, Thompson had started the first four games and posted a 2-2 record, but Hill stepped in and led the Knights with confidence.

Vegas remains committed to keeping Hill, and Hill himself has expressed his desire to stay with the team that gave him the opportunity to prove himself on the NHL’s biggest stage. Contract negotiations, however, may be influenced by several recent goaltending extensions around the league.

Thompson’s new deal in Washington came after an impressive 22-2-3 start with a .925 save percentage and 2.09 goals-against average in his first 27 games. His performance has been a driving force behind the Capitals’ league-best record. Other notable deals include the four-year, $33 million contract signed by 2023 Vezina Trophy winner Linus Ullmark with the Ottawa Senators, and the record-breaking eight-year, $92 million contract the New York Rangers gave 2022 Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin.

Several other goaltenders have also secured long-term contracts this season, including Seattle’s Joey Daccord (five years, $25 million) and Colorado’s Mackenzie Blackwood (five years, $26.25 million).

Hill’s Unique Case

While these contracts set benchmarks, Hill’s situation is unique. With 154 career starts over eight NHL seasons, Hill has shown flashes of brilliance but has also dealt with injuries that have limited his consistency. Despite that, his playoff performances have been exceptional, with a .932 save percentage and a 2.09 goals-against average over 19 postseason games with the Knights.

Hill’s development over the past few seasons has been evident. He is just four games away from tying his career high of 35 appearances, set last season. Although he started this season slowly, he has rebounded, posting a 19-9-3 record, a .903 save percentage, and a 2.60 goals-against average.

Teammates like center Nicolas Roy have expressed confidence in Hill’s ability, describing him as one of the best goaltenders in the league and acknowledging his consistency and reliability.

Hill’s performance has not gone unnoticed outside of Vegas, either. He has been selected to represent Team Canada in the upcoming 4 Nations Face-Off in February and could potentially earn a spot on the Canadian roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy.

Five Months to Make a Decision

With five months remaining before free agency begins, the Golden Knights have time to evaluate Hill’s value and structure an extension that reflects his contributions and future potential. The team will need to weigh his Stanley Cup experience, recent improvements, and playoff dominance against the risks of injury and long-term performance consistency.

For his part, Hill remains focused on the Knights and their current season. While he acknowledges the excitement of representing Canada, his loyalty and priorities are with the team that gave him a chance to shine.

The next few months will be crucial as both sides work toward a deal that ensures Hill remains a key piece of the Knights’ long-term success.

Trump’s New Tariffs Spark Trade War With Canada, Mexico, and China

President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Saturday imposing significant tariffs on imports from Mexico, Canada, and China, triggering swift retaliation and straining long-standing economic alliances. The decision has ignited a trade war between the U.S. and its North American neighbors, as well as with China, just two weeks into Trump’s second term.

The tariffs, part of Trump’s efforts to protect U.S. industries and address national security concerns, are aimed at pressuring these countries to curb the export of illicit fentanyl and, for Canada and Mexico, to reduce illegal immigration into the United States. The duties include a 10% tariff on energy imports from Canada—covering oil, natural gas, and electricity—and a 25% tariff on a wide range of goods from Mexico and Canada. Chinese imports will also face a 10% tariff, and the order allows for these rates to increase in response to retaliatory actions.

Retaliation From Canada and Mexico

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau responded by announcing matching 25% tariffs on up to $155 billion worth of U.S. imports, targeting products like alcohol and fruit. Speaking to the Canadian public, Trudeau criticized the tariffs, highlighting Canada’s long history of supporting the U.S. during crises, including military missions in Afghanistan, natural disaster relief efforts in the U.S., and international conflicts.

Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum also issued a strong response, rejecting accusations that the Mexican government was complicit with criminal organizations. She instructed her economy secretary to implement retaliatory tariffs and other countermeasures, including duties on American goods. She argued that the U.S. should focus on fighting the sale of illegal drugs within its own borders and curbing money laundering tied to the narcotics trade.

China’s Response and Legal Challenge

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the tariffs and vowed to take "necessary countermeasures" to defend its interests. The Ministry of Commerce announced plans to file a formal complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO), arguing that the U.S. tariffs violate international trade agreements. Chinese officials also pointed out that their country has already taken steps to regulate fentanyl-related substances and had previously cooperated with the U.S. on counter-narcotics efforts.

Economic Implications and Inflation Concerns

Economists are warning that the tariffs could worsen inflation in the U.S. and harm economic growth. A study by the Budget Lab at Yale University projects that the average American household will lose the equivalent of $1,170 in annual income due to higher prices on goods like groceries, gasoline, housing materials, and automobiles. The tariffs could also hurt key industries reliant on imports, such as homebuilders who depend on Canadian lumber and automakers sourcing materials from North America.

Democratic leaders were quick to blame Trump’s policies for potential price hikes, warning that the tariffs would raise the cost of essentials like tomatoes, cars, and construction materials. Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer pointed to the expected increase in prices as a direct consequence of the administration’s actions, highlighting the impact on everyday Americans.

The White House acknowledged the risk of inflation, with a senior administration official noting that the lower 10% rate on Canadian energy imports was designed to mitigate the impact on gasoline and utility prices. The official also clarified that the order did not include any exceptions or mechanisms to exempt certain industries, intensifying concerns among U.S. manufacturers and farmers.

Broader Trade Strategy

Trump’s order reflects his long-standing commitment to using tariffs as a key tool in his economic strategy. During his first term, he frequently imposed duties on imports to protect domestic industries, and his second term is shaping up to continue that approach. The order outlines the possibility of future tariffs on additional goods, including imported computer chips, steel, oil, natural gas, copper, pharmaceutical drugs, and goods from the European Union.

William Reinsch, a senior adviser at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, criticized the economic logic behind imposing tariffs on raw materials. He argued that low tariffs on inputs have traditionally helped U.S. manufacturers remain competitive by keeping production costs down. By targeting essential raw materials, Reinsch warned that the administration’s policies could undermine U.S. industry rather than strengthen it.

Political and Global Fallout

The tariffs come at a delicate time for the global economy, with many countries still recovering from previous trade disruptions and inflationary pressures. Experts warn that escalating tariffs could further strain international relations and disrupt global supply chains, particularly if the U.S. expands duties to additional sectors.

Trudeau expressed optimism that the U.S.-Canada relationship could weather the tensions, but he acknowledged the immediate economic pain for both countries. He encouraged Canadians to prioritize domestic products over American imports, calling on consumers to support Canadian industries and reduce reliance on U.S. goods. The premier of British Columbia, David Eby, went a step further by urging residents to boycott liquor from U.S. “red” states and removing American alcohol brands from government-run stores.

In Mexico, officials are closely monitoring the economic impact of the tariffs while pursuing diplomatic channels to resolve the dispute. President Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico would not back down and would defend its economic and national interests.

Future Uncertainty

The tariffs are set to take effect on Tuesday, and the situation could escalate rapidly if retaliatory measures continue. Analysts predict that prolonged trade disputes could destabilize markets and force businesses to adapt to higher costs by either passing them on to consumers or reducing production.

Trump’s second-term trade agenda appears poised to be a defining feature of his presidency, with tariffs serving as both a political tool and a means of reinforcing national security objectives. Whether this strategy will deliver the economic benefits Trump envisions or lead to further economic turmoil remains to be seen. For now, businesses, consumers, and global markets are bracing for the fallout.

🏈 Super Bowl Bets Soar as High Rollers Place Six- and Seven-Figure Wagers

The Super Bowl is not just the biggest event in football—it’s also the pinnacle of sports betting. Each year, millions of dollars are wagered on the NFL’s championship game, and 2025 is no different. With the Kansas City Chiefs set to face the Philadelphia Eagles on February 9 at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, sportsbooks are already reporting massive six- and seven-figure bets that could result in big wins or losses for both the bettors and bookies.

The previous Super Bowl, held in 2024 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, saw eight bets of $1 million or more, a record-setting figure that highlighted the growing popularity of sports gambling since its legalization in several states. In that game, the Chiefs secured a thrilling 25-22 overtime victory over the San Francisco 49ers, rewarding high-stakes bettors who had faith in Kansas City.

As the Chiefs prepare to return to the Super Bowl this year, bettors are once again wagering massive sums in hopes of hitting it big. Here’s a breakdown of some of the notable bets that have already been placed leading up to the highly anticipated game:

Confirmed Six- and Seven-Figure Bets

  • $800,000+ on Eagles money line (+110) — BetMGM, Feb. 1

  • $800,000+ on Eagles money line (+110) — BetMGM, Jan. 27

These two massive bets, each exceeding $800,000, reflect strong confidence in the Eagles to win outright. With odds of +110, a successful bet would yield significant returns for the bettor, making this a high-risk, high-reward wager.

  • $300,000+ on Chiefs money line (-130) — BetMGM, reported Feb. 1

Unlike the Eagles bets, this wager backs the Chiefs to win outright but with odds of -130, meaning a larger stake is required for a smaller payout. This reflects Kansas City’s slight status as the favorite going into the game.

  • $200,000 to win $550,000 on Eagles to win Super Bowl (+275) — Caesars Sportsbook, Jan. 19

This bettor placed $200,000 when the Eagles had longer odds earlier in the betting cycle. With a potential payout of $550,000, this wager could be one of the more profitable bets if the Eagles emerge victorious.

  • $125,000+ on Chiefs-Eagles under 49½ (-110) — BetMGM, reported Feb. 1 (two separate bets)

Two separate bets, each exceeding $125,000, were placed on the game’s total score staying under 49.5 points. Bettors are banking on a defensive battle between two high-powered offenses. With both teams featuring top-tier quarterbacks—Patrick Mahomes for the Chiefs and Jalen Hurts for the Eagles—this wager reflects confidence in the defenses stepping up.

Betting Landscape and Strategy

The bets so far show a mix of support for both teams, with some bettors favoring the Chiefs’ experience and others trusting the Eagles’ balanced offense and solid defense. The diversity of bets highlights the tight nature of this year’s matchup, as neither team has emerged as a clear favorite.

Bettors also appear to be taking advantage of line fluctuations, with some placing their wagers early to get better odds. The $200,000 bet on the Eagles at +275 is a prime example, as odds have shifted closer to even as game day approaches. Those who wager early can often secure more favorable payouts, though they also take on additional risk by betting before final injury reports and other variables are known.

A Record-Breaking Year Ahead?

With the Super Bowl becoming an increasingly lucrative event for sportsbooks, many expect the 2025 game to surpass last year’s record-breaking betting totals. BetMGM, Caesars Sportsbook, and other major operators are bracing for a flood of additional high-stakes wagers as kickoff draws near.

As bettors analyze team performances, player health, and game conditions, more six- and seven-figure bets are expected to be placed in the final days leading up to the game. Sportsbooks will update betting lines and totals accordingly, making the Super Bowl not just a thrilling event on the field but also a dynamic betting experience off it.

With only days remaining until the biggest game of the year, bettors and fans alike will be watching closely to see which team delivers the victory—and whether those massive bets will pay off.
