🚗 Nevada Residents Struggle With Rising Auto Insurance Costs Amid Premium Hikes

At just 19 years old, Nadia Guillen finds herself juggling responsibilities beyond her years. As she prepares to move out of her grandmother’s home and into her first apartment, her biggest financial hurdle is paying for car insurance. With her 2005 Hyundai Tucson insured through Mendota for $280 a month, she is actively searching for a second job to cover her expenses. Her insurance bill is her largest monthly expense, and despite using quote services like Freeway to find the cheapest rates, relief has been hard to come by.
Guillen, who has worked in the food industry since she was 16, hopes to secure a job paying around $18 an hour. The high insurance rates have left her frustrated, especially since she’s never been in an accident. “It’s just draining my funds,” she said.
Guillen’s situation reflects a broader problem affecting many Nevadans, as rising auto insurance rates strain household budgets across the state.
Nevada’s Auto Insurance Rates Among the Highest in the Nation
Nevada ranks seventh in the nation for the highest auto insurance rates, and costs are only expected to climb further. According to Insurify, the average annual cost of full coverage in the state was $2,973 in 2024, with projections for 2025 reaching $3,214—an 8% increase. Comparatively, the national average for full coverage is $2,313 annually, highlighting the financial burden Nevada drivers face.
The rising premiums are affecting all types of drivers, including Janet Santos and her husband Jaime. In January, the couple received a bill from Geico for $2,800 to cover their two cars—a 2021 Toyota Camry and a 2018 Nissan Kicks—for six months. The unexpected increase followed a similar jump in July 2024 when their premiums rose from $1,800 to $2,900 for the same period. Despite setting aside money each month, Santos admitted that the escalating costs have made it difficult to keep up.
Why Are Auto Insurance Rates Rising So Rapidly?
Auto insurance rates have been increasing significantly nationwide, but Nevada has been hit particularly hard. According to the Consumer Price Index, motor vehicle insurance saw an 11.3% increase from 2023 to 2024, and a 20.3% jump in 2023 alone. Several factors are driving the surge, including inflation, rising medical costs, and the unique conditions of Nevada’s roads.
Relaxed alcohol laws and the influx of partygoers in Las Vegas contribute to higher accident rates, which drive up insurance premiums. In addition, Nevada’s growing population has led to more cars on the road, increasing the likelihood of accidents and claims.
At least six major auto insurers, including Allstate and Farmers, raised their rates for private vehicles by at least 10% in October 2024. In early November, Coast National Insurance Company implemented a 6.77% rate hike affecting over 8,200 policyholders. GoAuto Insurance increased rates by 5% in December, while Mercury Casualty Company raised premiums by 16.3%, impacting nearly 13,500 Nevadans. The trend has continued into 2025, with Acuity Insurance raising rates by 9.5% for over 1,600 customers.
Despite these rate increases, insurance companies cannot implement changes without approval from the Nevada Division of Insurance. The division reviews requests to ensure that any rate hikes are fair and not excessive or discriminatory. However, even with regulatory oversight, the approved rate hikes have still hit consumers hard.
Is Cutting Back on Coverage a Good Idea?
For drivers like Guillen, it’s tempting to consider reducing coverage to save money. However, personal injury attorneys warn that cutting back could leave drivers vulnerable to costly out-of-pocket expenses. Las Vegas personal injury attorney Meesha Moulton emphasizes the importance of maintaining comprehensive coverage, even if premiums are high.
Moulton recommends adding uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage to protect against accidents involving drivers without sufficient insurance. Uninsured motorist coverage ensures that drivers are covered if they’re hit by someone without insurance, while underinsured motorist coverage kicks in when the at-fault driver’s policy isn’t enough to cover damages.
Additionally, Moulton advises considering medical payment coverage, which can help pay for medical expenses after an accident. While it may cost an extra $20 a month, it could save drivers from facing thousands of dollars in unexpected medical bills.
Ways to Lower Auto Insurance Costs
For those looking to reduce their premiums without sacrificing coverage, there are several strategies to consider:
Raise Your Deductible: Increasing the deductible can lower monthly premiums. However, this means paying more out of pocket if an accident occurs.
Bundle Policies: Combining auto insurance with homeowners or renters insurance under the same provider can lead to discounts.
Shop Around: Periodically comparing rates from different providers may help drivers find a better deal.
Maintain a Clean Driving Record: Avoiding accidents and traffic violations can lead to lower premiums over time.
Moulton suggests that while saving money is important, paying a little extra each month for sufficient coverage can ultimately protect drivers from significant financial losses.
Looking Ahead
With auto insurance rates projected to continue rising, many Nevadans are bracing for further financial strain. As the state’s population grows and road conditions evolve, drivers will need to balance affordability with the need for comprehensive protection. For Guillen and others like her, finding ways to manage these expenses will remain a top priority. By exploring coverage options and cost-saving strategies, they hope to weather the challenges of rising premiums without sacrificing financial stability.

🏒 Golden Knights Fall to Rangers After Third-Period Collapse

The Golden Knights seemed to be in control for much of the game Sunday, maintaining dominance during five-on-five play and holding a lead through 40 minutes. However, a late-game collapse saw them surrender three unanswered goals in the third period, resulting in a 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
The defeat spoiled a standout performance from Jack Eichel, who scored both of the Knights’ goals and nearly carried the team to victory. The loss also marked the Knights’ third straight defeat, dropping them to a 3-5-3 record over their past 11 games.
Third-Period Struggles Cost the Knights
K’Andre Miller scored the go-ahead goal for the Rangers with 8:27 remaining in the third period after the Knights failed to clear the puck from their defensive zone. New York, which entered the game with a poor 1-20-1 record when trailing after two periods, capitalized on Vegas’ mistakes to rally for the win.
Eichel acknowledged the team’s recent struggles in protecting leads, emphasizing the need to rediscover the confidence they had earlier in the season.
Eichel put the Knights on the board first with a power-play goal late in the opening period. His goal extended the team’s streak of scoring on the power play in seven straight road games, tying a franchise record.
After New York’s Alexis Lafreniere tied the game early in the second period, Eichel responded by charging through the neutral zone and beating Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick with a quick shot to regain the lead for Vegas. The goal marked Eichel’s 22nd multi-point game of the season, tying the franchise record.
Despite holding a 2-1 lead entering the third, the Knights couldn’t hold off the Rangers. Mika Zibanejad scored a power-play goal five minutes into the final period after Adin Hill was unable to control a rebound.
Vegas had a prime opportunity to retake the lead during a two-on-zero break, but Nicolas Roy failed to convert a pass from Raphael Lavoie. Shortly after, Miller scored the game-winning goal, and Artemi Panarin sealed the victory with a power-play goal in the final two minutes.
The Rangers, who had been on a three-game losing streak, found relief in the win, while the Knights were left frustrated.
Brandon Saad Makes Knights Debut
Brandon Saad, the two-time Stanley Cup winner who signed a one-year contract with the Knights on Friday, made his debut and immediately found himself in the action. He was forced to take the opening faceoff after Brett Howden was removed from the circle and went on to log 16:22 of ice time with three shots on goal.
Saad had a key scoring chance in the second period during a two-on-one rush with Howden, but Quick made the save, deflecting the puck out of play. Despite the missed opportunity, Knights coach Bruce Cassidy praised Saad’s performance, noting that he had several good looks at the net.
Defensive Pairing Shakeup
In addition to the changes among the forwards, Cassidy shuffled the team’s defensive pairings. Alex Pietrangelo was paired with Nic Hague, and Noah Hanifin joined Zach Whitecloud. The changes also highlighted the elevated role of Shea Theodore, who has been the team’s best defenseman this season.
Theodore and Brayden McNabb formed the top pairing against the Rangers, with Theodore logging 24:55 of ice time over 28 shifts and McNabb playing 23:19. The duo controlled much of the action during five-on-five play, with a 57.8 percent shot share and a 12-5 advantage in scoring chances. However, they were on the ice for Miller’s game-winning goal, a key moment that sealed the Knights’ fate.
Jonathan Quick’s Milestone Night
Former Knights goaltender Jonathan Quick delivered a stellar performance for the Rangers, making 34 saves and securing the 400th win of his NHL career. Quick became the first American-born goalie to reach the milestone and now sits 15th on the NHL’s all-time wins list.
One of Quick’s best saves came in the first period when he denied Eichel with a glove save. His performance was crucial in the Rangers’ comeback victory and earned him praise from his former teammates, who recognized his contributions during the Knights’ 2023 Stanley Cup run.
Looking Ahead
The Knights have now lost three straight games and are in the midst of a four-game road trip. With their next matchup looming, they will need to find solutions to their third-period struggles and capitalize on scoring chances to get back on track. The team’s inability to protect leads has become a recurring issue, and with the playoff race heating up, finding a fix will be critical to maintaining their position in the standings.

The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), a task force spearheaded by Tesla CEO and Trump adviser Elon Musk, has gained access to sensitive Treasury Department systems, including those related to Social Security and Medicare payment processing. According to sources familiar with the situation, this access could potentially allow DOGE to influence taxpayer data and federal payment systems, raising alarms over the potential misuse of critical government functions.
DOGE was established by the Trump administration with a mission to streamline government operations by firing federal workers, cutting programs, and rolling back regulations. The team’s newfound access to Treasury data marks a significant development, as it could provide Musk and his team with leverage over essential federal payment mechanisms that serve millions of Americans.
Concerns Over Potential Misuse of Treasury Data
News of DOGE’s access to Treasury systems was first reported by The New York Times and later confirmed by officials speaking on condition of anonymity to the Associated Press. The disclosure has triggered concerns on Capitol Hill, with lawmakers questioning the potential for politically motivated actions.
Ron Wyden, the highest-ranking Democrat on the Senate Finance Committee, expressed deep concerns in a letter to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Wyden warned that officials associated with Musk might use their access to withhold payments to critical programs, possibly jeopardizing benefits related to Social Security, Medicare, and other essential services. He emphasized that the integrity of the federal payment system is vital to the country’s economic stability and warned that any interference could result in severe consequences.
The timing of these concerns coincides with the recent resignation of David Lebryk, Treasury’s acting Deputy Secretary. After more than 30 years of service, Lebryk stepped down following DOGE’s request to access sensitive Treasury payment systems. Although his resignation letter to Treasury employees did not directly reference DOGE’s involvement, The Washington Post reported that Musk’s task force played a role in the decision.
In his farewell letter, Lebryk highlighted the crucial role of the Fiscal Service, which handles critical functions such as issuing federal payments and managing public debt. He praised Treasury staff for their dedication to safeguarding the financial infrastructure of the nation but hinted at challenges stemming from recent developments.
Musk Responds to Criticism
Elon Musk, who remains at the center of the controversy, addressed Lebryk’s departure on his social media platform, X. Musk claimed that Treasury payment officers had long been instructed to approve payments without proper scrutiny, including those linked to fraudulent or potentially dangerous entities. Musk suggested that the DOGE team’s investigation had uncovered systemic issues within the department, but he did not provide any evidence to support his claims.
Musk’s statement has added fuel to the debate, with critics questioning the credibility of his allegations and the transparency of DOGE’s activities. Given the task force’s mission to implement sweeping budget cuts and eliminate what it deems “bureaucratic waste,” there are concerns that its influence over Treasury data could result in disruptions to federal programs.
DOGE’s Mission and Controversial Origins
DOGE was initially co-headed by Musk and former Republican presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy. The task force was created as part of President Trump’s broader effort to overhaul the federal government by reducing spending and reshaping its workforce. Musk and Ramaswamy promised to slash billions from the federal budget through large-scale workforce reductions and deregulation initiatives.
However, DOGE’s aggressive approach has drawn criticism from those who fear its methods may destabilize key government services. Critics argue that its focus on cutting costs and firing workers could lead to diminished oversight, increased errors, and delays in federal payments that millions of Americans depend on.
The group’s access to sensitive data and payment systems further complicates its reputation, raising concerns that its influence could extend beyond simple cost-cutting and potentially interfere with essential government functions.
The Broader Impact of DOGE’s Influence
The news of DOGE’s access comes at a time when the federal government is under significant pressure due to budget cuts and regulatory changes under Trump’s administration. The task force’s role in influencing payment approvals, coupled with Musk’s claims of improper practices within Treasury, has led some to question whether DOGE could exploit its access to make politically motivated changes.
Treasury officials have so far remained tight-lipped about the specifics of DOGE’s access and the mechanisms in place to safeguard critical payment systems. However, watchdog groups and lawmakers are calling for increased oversight and transparency to ensure that any changes made under DOGE’s purview do not disrupt essential services or jeopardize the public’s trust in government operations.
Meanwhile, experts warn that any disruptions to federal payments could have far-reaching consequences. With programs like Social Security, Medicare, and unemployment benefits serving as lifelines for millions of Americans, even minor delays or disruptions could cause significant financial strain.
Uncertain Future Ahead
As DOGE continues its mission to reform federal government operations, the controversy surrounding its access to sensitive data is unlikely to fade quickly. With the resignation of a key Treasury official and growing concerns from lawmakers, the task force’s actions are expected to face increasing scrutiny in the coming months.
The broader implications of DOGE’s influence could shape the future of government efficiency initiatives and the extent to which outside figures, like Musk, can drive change within federal institutions. For now, the focus remains on ensuring that the nation’s critical payment systems remain secure and free from political interference as the debate over DOGE’s role continues to unfold.

🎰 Resorts World’s New CEO Alex Dixon Aims to Turn the Page and Build for the Future

Alex Dixon’s appointment as the chief executive officer of Resorts World Las Vegas marks a powerful and symbolic milestone in the city’s evolution. As the only Black CEO of a casino-hotel on the Strip, Dixon’s journey from his family’s working-class roots in Las Vegas to leading a $4.3 billion megaresort highlights the city’s progress and his personal achievement. His late grandmother, Ernesten Sewell-Cooks, worked as a housekeeper in Las Vegas hotels during the 1950s, a time when she wasn’t allowed to enter through the front door. Decades later, her grandson is at the helm of one of the Strip’s largest properties.
Dixon, 44, grew up in Las Vegas and credits his rise to a combination of hard work, community support, and industry mentorship. His role as CEO is a reflection of his dedication and the opportunities he has pursued over the years.
A Journey from Las Vegas to Executive Leadership
Dixon’s story began in Las Vegas, where he attended Durango High School before earning a bachelor’s degree from Howard University. He started his career in finance, working at major investment firms like J.P. Morgan Chase and Goldman Sachs. However, his family’s history in the gaming industry eventually drew him into the casino world.
His career in gaming took off when he spent nearly nine years with Caesars Entertainment, where he helped open Horseshoe Baltimore Casino in Maryland. He later joined MGM Resorts International and served as general manager of MGM Springfield in Massachusetts, leading the property’s opening in 2018. His return to Las Vegas came in 2019 when he was appointed to lead Circus Circus, a position that saw him navigating major challenges, including the property’s $825 million sale and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Following his time at Circus Circus, Dixon served as CEO of the Dubuque Racing Association in Iowa, where he oversaw operations at the Q Casino & Resort.
Building Industry Connections During the Pandemic
Dixon’s work during the COVID-19 crisis played a crucial role in shaping his current opportunity. He was appointed to Nevada’s COVID-19 task force, where he worked closely with Jim Murren, then-CEO of MGM Resorts. The two executives helped coordinate efforts to safely reopen the state’s economy. Their collaboration forged a strong professional bond, with Murren becoming a key mentor to Dixon.
The mentorship Dixon received throughout his career helped position him for success. He views his role at Resorts World as a chance to represent the community and show that individuals from all backgrounds can achieve leadership positions in major industries.
Challenges and Opportunities at Resorts World
Since its opening in 2021, Resorts World Las Vegas has faced financial and regulatory hurdles. Former president Scott Sibella left the property in 2023 after unrelated legal issues, but the property remains under scrutiny due to a 12-count complaint filed by the Nevada Gaming Control Board. The complaint alleges failures to comply with anti-money laundering regulations, and potential penalties include fines or license revocation.
Dixon is committed to addressing these issues by working closely with regulators and implementing stronger compliance measures. His plan involves creating a culture of accountability within the organization to ensure such problems do not recur.
A Vision for Long-Term Growth
Dixon sees tremendous potential for growth at Resorts World, thanks to its 85-acre footprint on the Strip. While there are no immediate expansion projects underway, he envisions future opportunities, particularly in convention space and additional hotel offerings. He believes that expanding meeting spaces would position the resort as a leading destination for business events and conventions.
For now, Dixon’s primary focus is on improving the resort’s core business—gaming. The property is currently in the process of hiring a chief gaming officer to help enhance operations and the overall guest experience. His leadership approach involves developing long-term strategies to maximize the property’s profitability and ensure it delivers strong returns for shareholders.
Dixon is committed to creating a thriving work environment, making Resorts World an employer of choice where employees feel valued and empowered to deliver exceptional service. His goal is to balance the guest experience with sustainable financial growth.
A Measured Approach to Success
Dixon acknowledges that turning Resorts World into a top-performing property will take time and careful planning. His focus is on creating a strong business plan and building confidence among stakeholders, including employees, guests, regulators, and investors. With 40 acres of undeveloped land on the property, Dixon sees endless possibilities for growth and innovation.
While there is work to be done, Dixon remains optimistic. He is confident that through a combination of strategic planning and disciplined execution, Resorts World can achieve its potential as a premier Las Vegas destination.
Under Dixon’s leadership, the property is ready to move forward, leaving past challenges behind and embracing future opportunities. His journey from a Las Vegas upbringing to leading one of the Strip’s biggest resorts is a testament to perseverance, vision, and the belief that success is built step by step.
