👨‍⚕️ New Freestanding Emergency Room Opens in Summerlin, Expanding Local Healthcare Access

Summerlin residents now have a new option for 24/7 emergency medical care with the opening of the ER at South Summerlin, a freestanding emergency room designed to extend the services of Summerlin Hospital Medical Center. The facility officially began operations on Monday morning, providing critical care around the clock for both walk-in patients and those arriving by ambulance.

Located at 10290 W. Flamingo Road, the new ER is part of the Valley Health System, which operates several hospitals and healthcare facilities throughout Las Vegas and Henderson. This expansion aims to alleviate the growing demand for emergency services in the area while offering the same level of care patients would receive at the main hospital.

Fully Equipped to Handle Emergencies

The ER at South Summerlin is fully equipped with state-of-the-art medical technology and staffed by the same skilled physicians, nurses, and support personnel who work at Summerlin Hospital’s main emergency department. The facility includes multiple treatment and exam rooms, an on-site laboratory, a CT scanner, and advanced imaging equipment such as X-ray and ultrasound machines. A dedicated decontamination room is also available for handling hazardous exposures and environmental emergencies.

With separate entrances for walk-in patients and ambulance arrivals, the facility is designed to optimize patient flow and ensure that individuals receive timely and efficient care.

Seamless Transfer to Summerlin Hospital

For patients requiring additional care beyond what the freestanding ER can provide, the facility is closely integrated with Summerlin Hospital. If needed, patients can be transferred quickly to the main hospital for specialized treatment, including advanced pediatric and adult care. The goal is to provide peace of mind to the community by ensuring a seamless transition from emergency care to hospitalization when necessary.

The ER’s CEO, Rob Freymuller, highlighted the importance of this connection, emphasizing that while many patients will likely be treated and discharged directly from the new facility, those with more complex needs will have access to the broader resources of Summerlin Hospital.

Addressing a Growing Community’s Needs

As Summerlin continues to grow, so does the demand for healthcare services. The opening of the ER at South Summerlin reflects the Valley Health System’s commitment to expanding access to emergency care in response to population growth and increasing healthcare needs in the Las Vegas area.

Summerlin has become one of the fastest-growing areas in Nevada, with an influx of new residents, housing developments, and businesses. As a result, local hospitals and medical centers have faced higher patient volumes, particularly in their emergency departments. By establishing additional freestanding ERs, the Valley Health System aims to reduce overcrowding at main hospital emergency rooms while ensuring that residents receive prompt, high-quality care.

Part of a Larger Network of Emergency Care

The ER at South Summerlin is the ninth freestanding emergency room within the Valley Health System’s network in the Las Vegas and Henderson areas. Other locations within the system provide similar services, creating a comprehensive network of emergency care facilities designed to handle a variety of medical situations, from minor injuries to life-threatening conditions.

Freestanding ERs have become an increasingly popular solution in growing urban and suburban communities, providing faster access to emergency care without the long wait times often associated with hospital-based ERs. They are also strategically located to serve residents who may not live near a major hospital, making it easier for them to receive timely treatment.

Enhanced Emergency Response in the Region

The opening of the ER at South Summerlin is expected to improve the overall emergency response capacity in the region. With its modern equipment and experienced medical team, the facility is well-positioned to handle emergencies ranging from severe injuries and cardiac events to respiratory issues and infectious diseases.

Additionally, the facility’s integration with the Valley Health System ensures that patients have access to a wide range of specialists and advanced treatments if needed. The system’s existing freestanding ERs have already proven effective in reducing wait times and improving patient outcomes, and the new location is expected to deliver similar benefits.

Looking Ahead

As healthcare needs in Southern Nevada continue to evolve, the Valley Health System remains focused on expanding access and enhancing the quality of care for local residents. The ER at South Summerlin is the latest addition to a growing network of facilities aimed at meeting the region’s diverse healthcare demands.

With its strategic location and comprehensive capabilities, the new ER is poised to play a vital role in ensuring that residents of Summerlin and surrounding communities have access to life-saving emergency care when they need it most.

🏒 Brandon Saad Eyes Third Stanley Cup as He Joins Golden Knights for Fresh Start

Brandon Saad knows what it takes to win the Stanley Cup, having lifted the trophy twice with the Chicago Blackhawks during their dynastic run in 2013 and 2015. Now, at 32 years old, Saad has set his sights on a third championship, and he believes the Golden Knights are the team to help him achieve it.

On Friday, Saad signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Golden Knights, joining a team that has been a consistent contender in recent years and claimed its first Stanley Cup in 2023. For Saad, the decision to join the Knights wasn’t just about continuing his career—it was about reigniting his championship ambitions after several years of playoff disappointments.

A Veteran Seeking Another Championship

Since his time with the Blackhawks, Saad has not made it deep into the playoffs. The closest he came was in 2021 with the Colorado Avalanche when the team reached the second round, only to lose in six games to none other than the Golden Knights. Reflecting on his choice to join Vegas, Saad saw a perfect mix of talent, depth, and leadership that could position him for another championship run.

He praised the Knights’ strong roster, coaching staff, and the electric atmosphere in Las Vegas, noting that the team has all the key components necessary for sustained success. Saad is eager to become part of that culture and hopes to contribute his experience as a Stanley Cup winner to a team aiming to reclaim the title.

Parting Ways with the Blues

Saad arrives in Las Vegas after spending the past three and a half seasons with the St. Louis Blues. He initially signed a five-year, $22.5 million deal with St. Louis in July 2021 and had productive seasons, scoring 69 goals over his first three years. However, this season marked a downturn in his performance, with just seven goals and 16 points in 44 games.

When the Blues placed him on waivers on January 28, Saad cleared but chose not to report to the team’s American Hockey League affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds. Instead, he and the Blues mutually agreed to terminate his contract, allowing him to become a free agent. Although he forfeited the remaining salary owed to him, Saad saw the opportunity for a fresh start in Las Vegas as more valuable than chasing additional money.

He acknowledged that, at this point in his career, success on the ice and the chance to compete for another Stanley Cup are more important to him than financial considerations. With two championships under his belt and a lucrative career behind him, Saad believes that joining a competitive team like the Knights is the right path forward.

A Fresh Start in Vegas

Saad made his debut for the Golden Knights on Sunday in the team’s 4-2 loss to the New York Rangers. He skated on the third line alongside center Brett Howden and captain Mark Stone, finishing the game with three shots on goal over 16:22 of ice time. Despite the team’s loss, Saad showed flashes of his signature style, taking the puck to the net and creating scoring opportunities.

Teammates, including left wing Ivan Barbashev—who played with Saad in St. Louis from 2021 to 2023—are optimistic about his impact on the team. Barbashev praised Saad’s work ethic and scoring instincts, believing that the veteran winger could help the Knights win important games down the stretch.

Coach Bruce Cassidy also expressed confidence in Saad’s ability to return to form. He noted that while Saad is still getting acclimated to his new team, his excitement and motivation are clear. The coaching staff plans to work with him to help him reach the level of play he’s capable of, a level that could prove crucial as the team navigates its current struggles.

A Timely Boost for the Knights

The Golden Knights have hit a rough patch recently, going 3-7-3 in their last 13 games. Saad’s arrival comes at a critical time, as the team looks to regain its footing and maintain its position in the playoff race. His experience as a proven winner and his hunger for another championship could be exactly what the team needs to reignite their momentum.

Saad understands the unique thrill of winning the Stanley Cup and is eager to help the Knights chase that feeling once again. He knows that success in the postseason requires more than just skill—it takes chemistry, hard work, and the ability to perform under pressure. With the Knights’ deep roster and strong leadership, Saad believes the team has what it takes to make another run at the Cup.

Looking Ahead

As Saad settles into his new role, he remains focused on contributing wherever he can to help the team succeed. Whether by scoring timely goals, providing leadership in the locker room, or offering guidance to younger players, he plans to be an asset in any way possible. For him, the journey is about more than just individual success—it’s about being part of a winning team and adding another chapter to an already impressive career.

The Golden Knights are betting that Saad’s winning pedigree and determination will help them get back on track and make another deep playoff run. With plenty of hockey left to play, Saad’s journey with the Knights is just beginning, but the ultimate goal remains the same: to lift the Stanley Cup once more.

Senate Panel Advances RFK Jr.’s Controversial Nomination for Health Secretary Amid Partisan Divide

Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a prominent environmental lawyer turned public health critic, took a significant step toward becoming the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a Senate panel voted to advance his nomination. The decision came after a contentious vote that highlighted deep partisan divisions, with all 14 Republican members of the committee voting to support Kennedy and all 13 Democrats opposing him.

The vote propels Kennedy’s nomination to the Senate floor, where a final confirmation vote will be held. With the Republicans holding a slight majority in the 100-member chamber, Kennedy’s confirmation appears likely unless several GOP senators defect.

Republicans Advance Kennedy Despite Concerns Over Vaccine Stance

Despite vocal concerns from both sides of the aisle, including among Republicans, Kennedy’s nomination has gained momentum. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, a physician who has criticized Kennedy’s past remarks undermining vaccine safety, ultimately voted to advance the nomination. His decision followed intense discussions with Kennedy and the White House, which reportedly involved securing commitments from the nominee regarding his future conduct as health secretary.

Republican Senators Susan Collins of Maine, Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, and Mitch McConnell of Kentucky remain potential swing votes. All three previously voted against a Trump nominee for defense secretary, citing similar concerns about competence and ethics. McConnell, during a recent CBS interview, reiterated his strong support for vaccines, leaving uncertainty about whether he will vote in favor of Kennedy.

Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, another key Republican vote, expressed cautious optimism after Kennedy assured him that public health agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) would be allowed to operate independently. However, Tillis warned that any interference with the integrity of these institutions would lead to serious consequences.

Democratic Senators Raise Ethical Concerns

Democratic lawmakers remain firmly opposed to Kennedy’s nomination, citing concerns over his history of spreading vaccine skepticism and the potential financial conflicts of interest he would face if confirmed. Senators Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and Ron Wyden of Oregon sent a letter to Kennedy over the weekend, warning that his decisions as health secretary could create opportunities for him to profit through legal cases against vaccine manufacturers.

Kennedy has referred hundreds of clients to a law firm involved in a lawsuit against Merck’s Gardasil, a human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine that prevents cervical cancer. Over the past three years, he has earned $2.5 million in referral fees from these cases. In an effort to address the criticism, Kennedy promised to give all future referral fees to his son. However, his assurances have done little to assuage Democratic concerns about potential conflicts of interest.

Democrats argue that Kennedy’s ability to influence vaccine guidelines, along with his history of promoting unfounded claims about vaccine safety, could lead to policies that undermine public health and benefit him financially.

Kennedy’s Role as Health Secretary

If confirmed, Kennedy would lead the sprawling $1.7 trillion HHS, a department responsible for overseeing food and hospital inspections, administering health insurance programs such as Medicaid and Medicare, and conducting research on diseases through agencies like the NIH. His position would give him significant influence over public health policies, including vaccine distribution and safety regulations.

Kennedy’s nomination comes after a dramatic political shift. A lifelong Democrat, he withdrew from the 2024 presidential race to support Donald Trump, securing a key position in the Republican administration as part of the deal. Together, Trump and Kennedy have formed a coalition blending conservative vaccine skeptics and health-conscious liberals under the slogan “Make America Healthy Again.”

The Path Forward

A full Senate vote on Kennedy’s nomination has not yet been scheduled, but the outcome will likely hinge on a few key Republican votes. With all Democrats expected to oppose the nomination, Kennedy can only afford to lose up to three Republican votes to secure confirmation.

Kennedy’s supporters argue that his unique blend of environmental activism and public health advocacy could bring needed reform to the HHS. However, opponents warn that his history of promoting vaccine misinformation poses a risk to the nation’s health infrastructure.

As the Senate prepares to vote, the debate surrounding Kennedy’s nomination highlights the broader tension between political ideology and scientific integrity—an issue that could have lasting consequences for the nation’s health policies.

🎰 Nevada Casinos Tighten Slot Machine Odds in Record-Breaking Year for Gaming Revenue

Slot machines in Nevada were tighter in 2024 than they were in the previous year, although most players probably didn’t notice the slight change. According to the Nevada Gaming Control Board’s recently released report, statewide win percentages for slot machines increased marginally from 7.16% in 2023 to 7.2% in 2024. While the difference may seem minor, it played a role in helping casinos achieve a record-breaking year.

Statewide, casinos raked in $15.6 billion from gamblers in 2024—an all-time high. Of that amount, $10.5 billion came from slot machines, while table games contributed $5.1 billion. The report also provided insights into which markets, denominations, and games were the most lucrative for casinos and which offered the best odds for players.

Market Variations: Slot and Table Game Win Percentages

Casino win percentages varied by market across Nevada, reflecting different player behaviors and casino offerings. In Clark County, which includes the Las Vegas Strip, the win percentage for slot machines was 7.51%, while downtown Las Vegas had a higher rate of 8.47%, and the Strip registered 8.03%.

For table games, players fared slightly better in 2024 compared to the previous year. The statewide table game win percentage dropped from 14.77% in 2023 to 14.29% in 2024, giving players a small edge. Clark County’s table game win percentage was 14.21%, downtown Las Vegas stood at 9.65%, and the Strip had a 14.83% win rate.

Where Players Won and Lost the Most

Sparks offered the best slot machine win rate for players, with casinos there posting a 5.24% win percentage. On the other hand, downtown Las Vegas had the best win percentage for players on table games at 9.65%.

Conversely, downtown Las Vegas also held the title for the highest casino win percentage on slot machines at 8.47%, while Elko County topped the list for table game win rates, with casinos winning 20.6% of wagers.

Billions Flowing Through Nevada’s Slots and Tables

Gamblers in Nevada poured a staggering $146 billion into slot machines in 2024, representing a 1.6% increase from 2023’s $143.7 billion coin-in. Table game players wagered $35.6 billion, up slightly by 0.5% from $35.5 billion in 2023.

Multidenomination slot machines—where players can choose different betting levels—were the biggest moneymakers for casinos, generating $7.15 billion in revenue. These machines, which are the most prevalent on casino floors with 78,475 units statewide, posted a win percentage of 6.75%. Despite the modest win percentage, revenue from multidenomination slots rose by 19.8%, making them the only denomination to experience year-over-year growth.

Penny slots, the second-largest source of slot machine revenue, generated $2.4 billion from 38,347 machines. However, their win percentage of 9.36% made them one of the most profitable denominations for casinos.

The Best and Worst Slot Machines for Players

For players seeking better odds, $5 denomination slots offered the best chance to win, with a casino win percentage of 4.46%. Statewide, these machines generated $52.9 million from 532 units but saw a 24.8% decline in revenue compared to the previous year.

Other favorable slot options for players included $25 machines (5.68% win percentage), nickel slots (6.46% win percentage), and dollar slots (6.7% win percentage). However, all these denominations experienced year-over-year revenue declines ranging from 17% to 24.9%.

Table Games: Baccarat and Blackjack Dominate

On the table games front, baccarat and blackjack remained the most lucrative for casinos. Baccarat generated $1.39 billion in casino winnings, a 6.3% decline from 2023. The game had a 15.57% win percentage on 427 tables statewide.

Blackjack closely followed, with casinos winning $1.34 billion, a 1.1% increase from the previous year. Blackjack tables had a win percentage of 14.25% across 2,015 tables, making it one of the better bets for players among table games.

Sports betting also proved favorable for players, with a win percentage of just 6.11% for casinos. Nevada sportsbooks collected $482.1 million in winnings, a slight 0.2% increase from the previous year. Minibaccarat had a win percentage of 11.54%, generating $93.3 million, while race books posted a win percentage of 15.31%, winning $28.4 million.

The Toughest Table Games for Players

Three-card poker proved to be the most challenging table game for players, with casinos winning 30.27% of the money wagered. The game generated $108.4 million in revenue across 162 tables, although that represented a 13.4% decline from the previous year.

Other popular but challenging table games included roulette and craps. Roulette tables posted a win percentage of 16.96%, earning casinos $440.1 million, while craps had a 16.35% win percentage, with $450.7 million in revenue. Both games experienced slight revenue declines compared to 2023.

Nevada’s Gaming Industry Remains Resilient

Despite challenges such as inflation and increased competition from emerging gaming markets, Nevada’s gaming industry remains robust, as evidenced by the record $15.6 billion in total gaming win. Slot machines continue to be the backbone of casino revenues, while table games like baccarat and blackjack provide significant contributions.

As multidenomination machines grow in popularity and new innovations enter the market, casinos will likely continue adjusting their offerings to maximize profitability. For players, understanding win percentages and choosing games wisely can make the difference between a night of fun and a financial setback. With 2024 setting new records, all eyes will be on how the gaming industry evolves in 2025.
