🏈 Las Vegas Prepares for Super Bowl Weekend with 4% Fewer Visitors, Strong Betting Action

Las Vegas is preparing for a busy Super Bowl weekend, but early projections suggest it will be slightly less crowded than last year’s record-breaking event. The Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority (LVCVA) estimated Thursday that around 316,000 people will visit the city this weekend, marking a 4% decline from 2024, when the city itself hosted Super Bowl 58. Despite the dip in visitors, the LVCVA is forecasting a strong 87% hotel occupancy rate across the city’s resorts, a slight increase from last year due to changes in available hotel capacity.
Why the Decline in Visitors?
The drop in projected visitation isn’t unexpected, given the extraordinary circumstances of 2024. Last year, Las Vegas hosted the Super Bowl at Allegiant Stadium, which naturally drew massive crowds of fans, media, and attendees. Without the added attraction of being the host city this year, a modest decline in tourists was anticipated. The 2025 game is being held in New Orleans, where the Kansas City Chiefs will face off against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Additionally, recent events may have impacted travel plans for visitors from Southern California, a critical market for Las Vegas tourism. A series of wildfires in January devastated parts of the Los Angeles area, potentially reducing the number of Californians making the trip. Historically, about one-third of Las Vegas visitors come from Southern California, and any disruption in that market can have noticeable effects on visitor numbers.
Betting Boom Could Offset Visitor Decline
While fewer people may be heading to Las Vegas, the city could still see a substantial financial windfall thanks to record betting activity. Earlier this week, the American Gaming Association (AGA) predicted that $1.39 billion would be wagered on the Super Bowl, the highest legal handle ever recorded for the event. Football fans have long flocked to the city to bet on the game, particularly on the extensive list of proposition bets that sportsbooks offer during Super Bowl weekend.
The AGA’s report highlights the increasing popularity of legal sports betting, which continues to grow year-over-year in Nevada and across the country. With many fans betting online or through mobile apps, Las Vegas could benefit from significant wagering activity even if some bettors choose not to travel to the city in person.
Impact of Hotel Availability on Occupancy Rates
Despite the dip in overall visitation, hotel occupancy rates are expected to be strong, with an 87% occupancy rate forecasted. This slight uptick compared to 2024 (which saw an 86.9% occupancy rate) is attributed to an increase in available rooms. Last year, The Mirage and Tropicana resorts were temporarily closed, reducing hotel capacity by 3.7% to 150,419 rooms. With those properties back in operation, the city is well-positioned to accommodate the anticipated crowds.
Super Bowl weekend traditionally sees hotel occupancy rates in the high 80s to low 90s, as tourists flock to watch the big game in luxurious viewing parties hosted by casinos, restaurants, and sports lounges.
Light Convention Calendar and Smaller Events
The LVCVA’s weekend projection does not specify how many of the expected 316,000 visitors are coming specifically for the Super Bowl or related events. However, the convention calendar offers little competition, with only a few small trade shows scheduled during or immediately after the game.
The largest of these is the CHAMPS Winter Trade Show, a counterculture paraphernalia exhibition expected to bring around 15,000 attendees to the Las Vegas Convention Center’s South Hall starting Wednesday. Two smaller trade shows are scheduled at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center and Aria beginning Monday, but none are expected to significantly impact overall visitation.
Hotel Prices Reflect Softer Demand
Another indicator of the lighter Super Bowl weekend crowd is the drop in hotel prices compared to last year. A recent survey by the Las Vegas Review-Journal showed that room rates across the city were well below 2024 levels, suggesting less demand for accommodations. Last year’s Super Bowl hosting duties drove up prices as fans scrambled for rooms, but with no such hosting responsibilities this year, prices have normalized.
Outlook for the Weekend
Despite the projected decline in visitation, Las Vegas is still expected to generate significant revenue through hotel stays, gaming, dining, and entertainment. The combination of near-peak occupancy rates and record betting activity on the game should help offset the smaller crowds.
As the city gears up for another major Super Bowl weekend, all eyes will be on sportsbooks and casinos to see how much betting action unfolds. Even with fewer visitors, Las Vegas remains a top destination for Super Bowl parties, wagering, and fan excitement.

💲 Super Bowl Betting Action Shifts as Eagles Money Dominates Vegas Lines

As Super Bowl Sunday nears, heavy betting on the Philadelphia Eagles has led to significant line adjustments at Las Vegas sportsbooks. The Kansas City Chiefs, who opened as 1.5-point favorites, briefly dropped to a pick’em at Circa Sports on Friday before returning to a 1-point favorite.
The shift was driven by a large wager on the Eagles, leading to rapid changes in point-spread betting. By mid-afternoon Friday, Circa reported that most of the money had shifted in favor of the Eagles, prompting the temporary move to a pick’em. The line returned to Chiefs -1 later that evening, but the majority of money remained on Philadelphia.
Major Wagers Influence the Market
BetMGM in Nevada has taken the two largest reported wagers on the Eagles, including $800,000 to win $880,000 and $750,000 to win $825,000, both on the money line at +110 odds.
Significant wagers on the Chiefs have also been placed, including $345,000 to win $300,000 on the Chiefs -1 (-115) and $326,000 to win $250,000 on the Chiefs money line (-130). While sportsbooks remain exposed to Eagles money line bets, they anticipate additional six- and seven-figure wagers before the game kicks off.
Varied Outcomes Across Sportsbooks
Sportsbooks are facing differing exposures depending on their specific betting action:
Station Sports is hoping for a Chiefs win and a low-scoring game, as much of the money has come in on the Eagles and the over.
Westgate SuperBook prefers an Eagles win and a lower total, with public bettors favoring the Chiefs and sharp bettors backing the Eagles.
Circa Sports remains exposed to Eagles bets, despite a majority of tickets favoring the Chiefs on the point spread.
Current Lines and Totals
As of Friday evening, most sportsbooks had the Chiefs as a 1-point favorite, with BetMGM and Boyd Gaming still holding Kansas City at -1.5. The consensus over/under total is set at 48.5 points. Some sportsbooks, including Westgate and South Point, are offering reduced juice promotions, such as -105 odds on sides and totals.
With betting expected to ramp up in the final hours before kickoff, sportsbooks are preparing for additional line movements driven by last-minute wagers, particularly from high rollers. Public bettors continue to favor Kansas City, while sharp money remains strong on the Eagles, setting the stage for a highly anticipated betting showdown.

The Pentagon is deploying approximately 1,500 additional active-duty soldiers to the U.S.-Mexico border in response to former President Donald Trump’s executive orders aimed at intensifying immigration enforcement, according to a U.S. official who spoke on condition of anonymity. This new deployment will bring the total number of active-duty troops at the border to roughly 3,600.
The newly approved deployment includes a logistics brigade from the 18th Airborne Corps, based at Fort Liberty in North Carolina. The brigade will be responsible for providing critical support, including transportation, supply distribution, and operational coordination to sustain the border mission. This move is part of a broader effort to reinforce the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) efforts to deter illegal crossings and manage the growing influx of migrants at the border.
A Growing Military Presence at the Border
Since Trump signed executive orders shortly after his inauguration on January 20, the military has been ramping up its presence. The first wave of deployments saw 1,600 active-duty troops already stationed at various points along the border. Additionally, nearly 500 soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division are scheduled to move to the region in the coming days to further enhance operational capabilities.
The primary duties of these soldiers include installing concertina wire barriers and providing essential logistical, intelligence, and transportation support to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP). The deployment underscores the administration’s determination to use military resources to assist law enforcement agencies in securing the border and managing migrant detention facilities.
Marine Deployments to Guantanamo Bay
In addition to the troops heading to the southern border, approximately 500 Marines have been ordered to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, where some migrants will be detained. The facility is being prepared for an anticipated surge in detainees, and several hundred Marines have already arrived to help set up accommodations, expand detention capacity, and assist with operational duties.
Guantanamo Bay, primarily known for housing terrorism suspects, will now also serve as a temporary holding facility for detained migrants. The Marines stationed there are responsible for preparing infrastructure to accommodate the incoming migrants, as well as providing logistical and security support.
Role of the Logistics Brigade
The logistics brigade from the 18th Airborne Corps will play a critical role in ensuring the sustainability of the mission. Their responsibilities will include transporting supplies, maintaining communication systems, and managing equipment necessary for operations at the border. The brigade’s deployment is part of the Pentagon’s strategy to provide comprehensive support, ensuring that the active-duty troops can remain on the ground for an extended period without logistical disruptions.
Broader Context and Challenges
The deployment comes amid ongoing debates over immigration policy and the use of military personnel in domestic law enforcement support roles. Critics have raised concerns about the long-term implications of deploying active-duty soldiers to assist with immigration enforcement, questioning whether such missions divert military resources away from their intended roles. Supporters, however, argue that the military’s involvement is necessary to address what they describe as a border crisis.
The expanded military presence highlights the Trump administration’s aggressive approach to border security, including the construction of physical barriers, increased detention capabilities, and the expedited processing of asylum seekers. However, logistical challenges remain, particularly in coordinating between the military, DHS, and CBP to ensure smooth operations along the border.
What’s Next?
As the Pentagon continues to implement Trump’s executive orders, further troop movements or mission expansions may be announced in the coming weeks. For now, the focus remains on completing the installation of barriers, supporting Border Patrol operations, and ensuring that detention centers—including Guantanamo Bay—are fully prepared to handle the increased volume of migrants.
The situation at the border is expected to remain fluid, with ongoing assessments of military requirements and evolving needs on the ground.

🎰 Bally’s Completes $4.6B Buyout, Plans Major Casino-Hotel and MLB Stadium in Las Vegas

Bally’s Corp., the casino operator based in Rhode Island, has completed a $4.6 billion buyout by its largest shareholder, Standard General LP, a New York-based hedge fund managed by Bally’s Chairman Soo Kim. The deal, which included the merger of Bally’s with The Queen Casino & Entertainment Inc., marks a significant expansion of the company’s operations and influence across the U.S. gaming landscape.
As part of the acquisition, Bally’s operational footprint now includes 19 casinos in 11 U.S. states, a golf course in New York, and a horse racetrack in Colorado. Bally’s also holds sports betting licenses in 13 U.S. jurisdictions and manages online casinos in four states, further diversifying its revenue streams in both land-based and digital gaming markets.
Financial Details of the Deal
The acquisition was achieved by purchasing 22.8 million shares of Bally’s stock at $18.25 per share, representing a 71% premium over the company’s 30-day average share price. Shareholders of The Queen received 30.5 million shares as part of the merger deal. The transaction was financed through a combination of Bally’s available cash reserves and $500 million in senior secured notes due in 2028. The notes were issued through funds managed by Apollo Global Management, a private equity powerhouse.
Despite the buyout, some investors chose to retain their shares through a rollover election. Bally’s confirmed that 17.9 million outstanding shares were retained, allowing these investors to remain part of the publicly traded company. Starting Monday, the company will officially change its stock ticker from “BALY.T” to “BALY” on the New York Stock Exchange.
Tropicana Closure and New Development Plans
The former Tropicana casino-hotel, once an iconic part of the Las Vegas Strip, officially closed its doors on April 2, 2024, and was imploded on October 9, 2024, as part of Bally’s redevelopment plans. Although details of the future project remain under discussion, Bally’s and landowner Gaming & Leisure Properties Inc. (GLPI) have committed to building a new casino-hotel on the 35-acre site, located at the high-profile intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana Avenue.
In addition to the new casino-hotel, Bally’s and GLPI have allocated up to 9 acres of the site for the construction of a Major League Baseball (MLB) stadium. The stadium would serve as the new home for the Oakland Athletics, who are planning to relocate to Las Vegas after decades in California.
MLB Stadium Plans and Community Impact
The Oakland Athletics have officially applied for a land-use permit for the proposed $1.75 billion ballpark. The facility is expected to have a seating capacity of 33,000 fans and could include additional features such as retail spaces, entertainment venues, and dining options, making it a potential destination beyond baseball games. According to team representatives, construction on the stadium could begin as early as April or June of this year, pending approval from local authorities.
The planned MLB stadium represents a major development in Las Vegas’ ongoing transformation into a hub for professional sports. The city, already home to the NFL’s Las Vegas Raiders and the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights, sees the addition of a Major League Baseball team as a key component of its sports-driven economic growth strategy. Local leaders anticipate that the stadium, combined with Bally’s new casino-hotel, will further drive tourism and boost job creation in the area.
Bally’s Strategic Expansion
The buyout and subsequent development plans come as part of Bally’s larger strategy to expand its presence in the highly competitive casino and entertainment industry. Over the past several years, the company has aggressively pursued acquisitions, including its purchase of online gaming operators, sports betting platforms, and regional casinos across the U.S. By diversifying its assets across traditional casinos, online gaming, and sports betting, Bally’s is positioning itself to compete with industry giants such as MGM Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, and Wynn Resorts.
The former Tropicana site is seen as a prime opportunity for Bally’s to capitalize on Las Vegas’ growing tourism market, which has seen a resurgence following the COVID-19 pandemic. The company’s ability to develop both a world-class casino and a major sports venue could significantly enhance its revenue potential and brand visibility.
What’s Next for Bally’s and Las Vegas?
While the future design and timeline of the new casino-hotel remain unclear, Bally’s executives have expressed confidence that the redevelopment will be a major success. The potential MLB stadium project has also garnered support from local officials and tourism stakeholders, who view the combination of sports and entertainment as a winning formula for the city.
With construction on the stadium possibly beginning by mid-2025, the Las Vegas Strip is poised for yet another transformation, blending the glitz and glamour of a luxury casino resort with the excitement of professional sports. For Bally’s, this project could cement its position as a major player in the U.S. gaming and entertainment industry.
