🛒 New Costco Location in Southwest Valley Set to Begin Construction

Plans for a new Costco in southwest Las Vegas advanced this week as the Clark County Commission approved a development agreement with Costco Wholesale Corp. The agreement was part of the commission’s list of routine action items, approved along with several other matters in a single vote without any discussion on the project.

The new Costco location will be a 157,633-square-foot retail building along the east side of Buffalo Drive, just south of the 215 Beltway. The project will also include a gas station and tire center, according to county records.

Initial plans for the Costco were approved by county commissioners in September 2023. One of the conditions tied to the approval was the requirement for Costco to sign a development agreement before any construction permits could be issued. This agreement ensures that Costco will contribute its fair share toward public infrastructure improvements in the surrounding area.

Preparations for the project are already underway, with the Clark County Building Department issuing a commercial grading permit in December. Site work has since begun, setting the stage for construction to follow.

The project site is located on county-owned land, according to property records. A private company holds a ground lease with the county for the land and is subleasing the site to Costco, allowing the retailer to proceed with its development.

Costco, headquartered in Washington state, is known for its members-only business model and large warehouse stores offering food, household goods, and other items in bulk. The new store will add to the company’s five existing locations in the Las Vegas Valley, further expanding its presence in the region.

With the development agreement finalized, Costco is expected to move forward with the permitting and construction phases, bringing additional retail and fuel services to the growing southwest valley community.

🏒 Tomas Hertl’s Late Goal Lifts Golden Knights Past Bruins 4-3

The Golden Knights capped off a challenging month with a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over the Boston Bruins on Saturday at TD Garden. Trailing by two goals in a game where offense was difficult to generate, the Knights fought back, earning their second consecutive win following Thursday’s victory over New Jersey. It marked the team’s first back-to-back wins since early January.

Tomas Hertl secured the game-winning goal on a power play with 1:10 left in regulation. His clutch goal came just 32 seconds after teammate Pavel Dorofeyev had an apparent go-ahead goal disallowed due to goalie interference. The victory boosts the Knights’ record to 33-17-6 as they head into a two-week break for the 4 Nations Face-Off, during which five players will participate in the round-robin tournament while the rest take time to recover. The team will return to action on February 22, hosting the Vancouver Canucks.

Knights Overcome Early Deficit

The Knights found themselves in trouble midway through the second period, trailing 3-1 after goaltender Ilya Samsonov mishandled the puck behind the net, leading to an easy goal by Bruins left wing Morgan Geekie. However, the Knights clawed their way back.

With 34 seconds left in the second period, defenseman Zach Whitecloud fired a shot from the point that slipped past Boston goalie Jeremy Swayman after he failed to control the rebound, cutting the deficit to 3-2. In the third period, Dorofeyev tied the game at 4:54 with his 23rd goal of the season, capitalizing on sustained offensive pressure.

Despite a disallowed goal on the power play with 1:42 remaining, Hertl delivered the decisive blow with another power-play tally, securing the win. Mark Stone also scored on the power play in the first period, and Samsonov made 21 saves to help seal the victory.

A Much-Needed Momentum Shift

The win comes at a crucial time for the Knights, who were 3-8-3 in their previous 14 games and had struggled to close out tight contests. Many of those losses were close, with 10 of the 11 defeats since January 9 coming in games that were tied or within one goal during the third period. Thursday’s win against New Jersey was considered one of their most complete performances of the season, and Saturday’s comeback solidified that positive trend.

The defensive improvements were evident, as the Knights held the Bruins to just 12 shots over the final two periods after allowing 12 in the first. Coach Bruce Cassidy, who returned to Boston where he previously coached the Bruins, praised the team’s puck management and transition play, which helped them maintain offensive pressure and limit Boston’s scoring chances.

Key Takeaways from the Win

1. Victor Olofsson Suffers Early Injury

Right wing Victor Olofsson, who started the game on the top line, left the game after an upper-body injury less than a minute into the first period. The injury appeared to be the result of taking a puck to the throat. Although Olofsson felt better afterward, further evaluation will take place once the team returns to Las Vegas.

2. Ilya Samsonov’s Resilience

Despite a costly mistake that led to Boston’s third goal, Samsonov had a strong overall performance. He made several critical saves, including a lunging glove save on a two-on-one play in the first period and another key stop on Pavel Zacha late in the third period to preserve the 3-3 tie. His ability to bounce back and make timely saves kept the Knights in the game, highlighting the importance of goaltending under pressure.

3. Jack Eichel Approaches Team Assist Record

Jack Eichel continued his stellar season, recording two assists in the third period to reach 50 for the year. This ties him with David Perron’s single-season franchise record (2017-18). With 69 points so far, Eichel is on pace to surpass his career-high 54 assists from his time with the Buffalo Sabres in 2018-19. He is currently tied for sixth in the NHL in points, solidifying his role as the team’s top playmaker.

Looking Ahead

The Knights will use the upcoming break to recover and regroup after an up-and-down month. Their recent wins have provided much-needed momentum, and players like Eichel, Dorofeyev, and Samsonov will be key in maintaining that success as the team gears up for the final stretch of the season. With improved defense, timely goaltending, and offensive contributions from their top players, the Knights hope to build on this positive momentum when they return to action against Vancouver.

Elon Musk Quietly Reshapes Federal Government, Critics Question Lack of Oversight

Elon Musk, tasked by President Donald Trump with making the federal government more efficient, promised transparency and openness when his role was announced. However, three weeks into Trump’s return to the White House, Musk’s efforts have largely unfolded behind closed doors, sparking concern over secrecy and unchecked influence. Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, has embedded itself deep within federal agencies, sidelining career officials and avoiding public scrutiny. He has not responded to media inquiries or appeared before lawmakers, creating uncertainty about the scope and oversight of his activities.

A Quiet but Powerful Presence

Musk has quickly established himself as a key player in Trump’s administration, describing his role as "tech support" for the White House. His team has taken control of numerous federal processes, often without public announcements or explanations. Staff members of DOGE have been seen in agencies such as the Department of Veterans Affairs, Treasury Department, FEMA, and NOAA, with no official notice of their arrival. Career employees have been left in the dark, spotting unfamiliar faces in hallways and unsure of what systems are being accessed.

At the Department of Education, DOGE staff members have set up in a conference room near the secretary’s office, raising concerns among employees about what internal systems are being used and for what purpose. Some agency staff worry that the lack of transparency could lead to unchecked access to sensitive information, but DOGE workers remain enthusiastic, often seen high-fiving one another after key accomplishments.

Musk’s influence extends far beyond the agencies. His online presence through X (formerly Twitter) is filled with declarations about his grand ambitions to reduce government spending, eliminate waste, and reverse the federal deficit. His rhetoric often frames the current moment as a rare opportunity for large-scale reform, emphasizing urgency and a need for bold action.

Unanswered Questions and Concerns

Musk’s access to sensitive government payment systems and classified information has raised alarms, especially since he has not outlined specific safeguards or plans for how that data will be managed. His critics worry that his business empire—spanning Tesla, SpaceX, and X—creates potential conflicts of interest, especially as DOGE prepares to examine Pentagon spending, where SpaceX holds billions of dollars in contracts.

The White House has stated that Musk will avoid working in areas where conflicts of interest exist, but no details have been provided on how that will be enforced. Musk is expected to file a financial disclosure report, but the administration has indicated that it will remain confidential, leaving lawmakers and the public without insight into his financial ties.

Pushback from Lawmakers and Watchdog Groups

Democrats in Congress have been vocal about their concerns, accusing Musk of wielding unchecked power. Members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee attempted to subpoena him, but the effort was blocked by Republican members, who support Musk’s mission to eliminate government inefficiencies. Some Democrats, including Rep. Gerald Connolly of Virginia, have raised questions about Musk’s ability to make sweeping decisions—such as shutting down agencies, transferring employees, or offering early retirements—without congressional oversight.

Trump’s administration has also targeted the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), where Musk’s team has worked to cut funding. The president praised Musk for uncovering waste, including reports of Social Security benefits being paid to people listed as 150 years old and underused government buildings and contracts being canceled. Despite concerns from lawmakers, the White House is confident that the public will support Musk’s aggressive cost-cutting measures.

Musk’s allies, including David Sacks, a tech executive and venture capitalist, have defended DOGE’s work, describing the team as a group of young, energetic engineers and IT experts committed to modernizing government systems. Energy Secretary Chris Wright also praised their efforts, likening them to management consultants conducting critical reviews of federal operations.

Legal Threats and Potential Ramifications

Musk’s team has taken a hardline stance against leaks and criticism. Some DOGE staff members have backgrounds in Musk’s private companies, and their identities are being kept secret. Musk has warned that revealing their names would be considered a crime, though no legal basis has been provided for this claim. Trump-appointed interim U.S. Attorney Ed Martin recently warned that legal action could be taken against anyone who obstructs or threatens DOGE employees.

Martin’s office has already thanked Musk for referring individuals suspected of stealing government property or threatening federal workers, though no additional details have been released. This aggressive posture has left career officials wary of questioning DOGE’s work or its growing influence.

Potential Conflicts Ahead

One of the biggest tests of Musk’s role could come soon as his team reviews Pentagon spending. SpaceX’s existing contracts to launch military satellites present an obvious conflict of interest, and Musk’s close involvement raises questions about whether his company could gain an unfair advantage. Critics argue that without proper safeguards, Musk could shape decisions that directly benefit his businesses, undermining trust in government processes.

Despite these concerns, Musk and Trump remain confident in their approach. Trump has expressed full support for Musk’s methods, insisting that dismantling inefficient systems is necessary to uncover corruption. With Musk’s presence growing and his influence expanding across federal agencies, debates over transparency and oversight are likely to intensify in the coming months.
