🎥 Sony and Howard Hughes Secure Union Deal for Summerlin Studio Amid Legislative Debate

A major construction labor agreement has been reached for a proposed movie studio in Las Vegas, just as Nevada’s legislative session kicks off with potential financial incentives designed to boost the state’s film industry. The Southern Nevada Building Trades Unions announced that it finalized a project labor agreement (PLA) for the planned studio along Flamingo Road near Town Center Drive in Summerlin.
This 31-acre project is a collaboration between Howard Hughes Holdings, the developer behind the Summerlin master-planned community, and Sony Pictures Entertainment. The studio is expected to include 10 soundstages and a 2-acre backlot, with Sony committing $1 billion over the next decade and Howard Hughes Holdings investing $700 million to build the campus. Clark County commissioners approved the project in March 2023.
The Southern Nevada labor group, which represents about 20,000 construction workers across 19 unions, emphasized that the agreement will create thousands of union construction jobs. PLAs typically establish terms of employment for union workers and contractors on major construction projects, ensuring project timelines and labor standards are met.
Construction Pending Passage of Tax Incentives Bill
While the labor agreement is a major step forward, construction will not begin until the Nevada Legislature passes an incentives bill. The proposed tax perks are a critical factor for both Sony and Howard Hughes Holdings, as the funding will help bring large-scale film production to the state.
The proposed studio is one of two high-profile projects vying for state support. Legislators, including State Sen. Roberta Lange and Assemblywoman Sandra Jauregui, have been working to expand Nevada’s film tax credit program, which currently offers $10 million in credits annually. Under the proposed legislation, that number would increase significantly to attract major film productions.
Jauregui’s plan calls for up to $105 million in tax credits annually for 15 years, with $80 million specifically reserved for productions at the Summerlin studio. Meanwhile, Lange is drafting a separate proposal that would set aside up to $115 million in annual tax credits over the same period, with $100 million allocated for a competing project called Nevada Studios.
Competing Studio Plans
Nevada Studios is another ambitious project that could play a key role in shaping the state’s film industry. Planned for the UNLV Harry Reid Research and Technology Park in the southwest Las Vegas Valley, this studio would include up to 14 soundstages and a 5-acre backlot. The competition between the two studios highlights the growing interest in positioning Nevada as a hub for film and television production, similar to Georgia and New Mexico, where tax incentives have driven significant growth in the entertainment sector.
Legislative Action and Next Steps
Nevada’s current legislative session, which began on February 3, is expected to play a decisive role in determining the future of both projects. With substantial investments on the line, both studios are banking on state support to make their plans a reality.
If the proposed tax credit expansions pass, the Summerlin studio and Nevada Studios could generate a combined economic boost by attracting high-budget productions, creating jobs, and spurring local business activity. The decision by lawmakers will likely shape the future of Nevada’s film industry for years to come.

🏈 Eagles Favored to Repeat as Super Bowl Champions, Chiefs and Bills Close Behind

After their commanding 40-22 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl 59, the Philadelphia Eagles have emerged as the early favorites to win next year’s Super Bowl. The Westgate SuperBook currently lists Philadelphia as the 6-1 favorite to repeat as champions, thanks to their well-rounded roster, which includes a strong core of young players expected to return next season.
Following the Eagles are the Chiefs, Ravens, and Bills, all tied at 7-1 odds. Kansas City, despite the recent loss, remains a perennial contender, having appeared in five of the past six Super Bowls. Led by quarterback Patrick Mahomes, the Chiefs are expected to continue drawing significant future bets due to their consistent postseason success.
Future Betting Frenzy
The day after the Super Bowl is one of the busiest for sportsbooks, as bettors place early wagers on the next championship. According to the SuperBook, bets have already been placed on every NFL team, with Buffalo leading the ticket count, followed by Kansas City, Philadelphia, and Baltimore.
The Bills, although consistently regarded as contenders, have struggled to overcome the Chiefs in key playoff games. Their defensive shortcomings remain a concern, but with quarterback Josh Allen leading the team, bettors remain optimistic about their chances.
The Ravens, who were the highest-rated team in the AFC at the end of the regular season, have also generated significant interest. Although they have yet to break through to the Super Bowl in recent years, their talent and high power rating make them a strong contender.
Lions, 49ers, and Commanders Among Other Top Teams
The Detroit Lions follow closely behind the favorites with 10-1 odds. However, the team faces challenges after losing both their offensive and defensive coordinators, which could hinder their progress next season. San Francisco, listed at 14-1 odds, will aim to win a Super Bowl in their home stadium, potentially becoming the third team to do so in the past seven years.
The 49ers struggled this past season due to injuries and inconsistent play, but they still possess a strong foundation. However, questions remain about whether they have the depth and young talent needed to match Philadelphia’s success.
The Washington Commanders, coming off an unexpected run to the NFC Championship Game, are listed at 16-1. Led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels, the team’s future looks bright, but there are concerns about whether they can maintain their momentum. Young teams with breakout seasons often face setbacks, as seen with last year’s Texans.
Packers and Raiders Draw Betting Interest
The Green Bay Packers are listed at 20-1 odds and continue to attract attention from bettors due to their high power rating and potential for success in a tough division. Many believe the Packers have the capability to make a significant playoff run if key pieces fall into place.
Meanwhile, the Las Vegas Raiders, sitting at long-shot 100-1 odds, are already a major liability for sportsbooks. Each year, Raiders fans place heavy wagers on their team, creating six- or seven-figure liabilities for sportsbooks. Despite their recent 4-13 season, optimism surrounds the team with the arrival of new head coach Pete Carroll.
The Raiders are expected to improve under Carroll’s leadership and a more favorable schedule. A realistic target for the team could be seven to nine wins next season, making them a potential dark horse for bettors looking for long-shot value.
Super Bowl 60 Outlook
With powerhouse teams like the Eagles, Chiefs, Ravens, and Bills leading the pack, and emerging contenders such as the Lions, 49ers, and Commanders in the mix, next season’s race to the Super Bowl promises to be highly competitive. While favorites typically dominate early betting, surprises can emerge, as seen in previous years.
As the offseason unfolds, player trades, coaching changes, and injuries will continue to shape the betting landscape, with plenty of time for underdogs to rise and contenders to solidify their positions.

President Donald Trump welcomed Jordan’s King Abdullah II to the White House on Tuesday, seeking to gain support for his controversial plan to relocate Palestinians from Gaza to neighboring nations. The visit comes amid a fragile ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, as tensions remain high and concerns about the humanitarian crisis in Gaza continue to escalate.
The meeting coincides with Trump’s call for Hamas to release all hostages captured during its October 2023 attack on Israel by Saturday. If Hamas fails to comply, Trump has urged Israel to resume military operations in Gaza. His plan also includes an audacious proposal for the U.S. to take control of Gaza and transform it into a prosperous hub, while relocating Palestinians to other nations with no right of return.
Plan to Relocate Palestinians Draws Rejection from Key Allies
Trump has proposed that Jordan and Egypt, both long-standing U.S. allies, absorb a significant number of displaced Palestinians. To pressure compliance, Trump suggested that the U.S. could withhold foreign aid from the two nations if they do not cooperate. Jordan currently hosts over 2 million Palestinians and has firmly rejected the plan, citing long-term security risks and its commitment to a two-state solution.
Jordanian officials, including Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi, have expressed strong opposition to Trump’s proposal, arguing that the forced relocation of civilians could destabilize the region and undermine peace efforts. Egypt has also raised concerns about security risks and the strain on resources.
Despite the resistance, Trump expressed confidence that Jordan and other nations would accept Palestinian refugees, emphasizing their humanitarian responsibilities.
Diplomatic Meetings and Middle East Strategy
During his visit, King Abdullah is holding meetings with top members of the Trump administration, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, national security adviser Mike Waltz, Middle East envoy Steve Witkoff, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He will also meet with a bipartisan group of lawmakers on Capitol Hill to discuss the implications of Trump’s Middle East strategy.
Trump’s meeting with the king is part of his broader efforts to reshape the geopolitical landscape of the Middle East. Last week, Trump outlined his ideas alongside Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling for Palestinian relocation and U.S. involvement in Gaza’s reconstruction.
Trump initially suggested the possibility of deploying U.S. troops to help secure Gaza but clarified that U.S. funds would not be used for the reconstruction of the war-torn territory. The plan has faced criticism from lawmakers and international leaders for its ambiguity and potential long-term consequences.
No Right of Return for Palestinians
Although some White House officials, including Secretary Rubio and press secretary Karoline Leavitt, framed the relocation of Palestinians as temporary, Trump confirmed in a recent interview that those displaced would not have a right to return to Gaza. The statement has raised further questions about the viability of his plan and its impact on peace negotiations.
The meeting with King Abdullah marks Trump’s ongoing push to implement his vision for the Middle East, but with key regional allies resisting his proposals, the path forward remains uncertain. As tensions in Gaza simmer and the ceasefire hangs in the balance, the stakes are high for both regional stability and U.S. diplomatic efforts.

🎰 Las Vegas Strip Sees Revenue Growth, but Casino Profits Decline

Nevada’s 307 largest hotel-casinos reported $2.6 billion in profits on $31.5 billion in total revenue during the 2024 fiscal year, according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board. Of that total, $11.3 billion came from gaming revenue, continuing a long-term trend where resorts generate more revenue from non-gaming amenities such as rooms, dining, and entertainment.
The annual Nevada Gaming Abstract report, which tracks casino performance for the fiscal year ending June 30, highlighted that these properties paid $1.16 billion in gaming taxes and fees. The report covers properties earning at least $1 million annually from gaming and provides key insights into the state’s critical gaming industry.
Statewide Performance Overview
The report revealed a 5.5% increase in total revenue and a 3.4% increase in gaming revenue compared to the previous fiscal year. However, net income dropped 24.4%, reflecting ongoing challenges in the hospitality sector despite growth in spending on non-gaming attractions.
Clark County, home to the majority of Nevada’s gaming activity, reported $2.3 billion in net income from $28.5 billion in total revenue, marking a 6.2% revenue increase. Gaming revenue in the county rose 4.3% to $9.8 billion, yet net income still saw a 24% decline compared to 2023.
Las Vegas Strip and Downtown Performance
The Las Vegas Strip, the state’s largest contributor to gaming and tourism, generated $21.9 billion in total revenue, a 6.8% increase from the previous year. Gaming revenue climbed 4.9% to $5.7 billion. However, net income on the Strip took a steep 40.4% drop to $820.2 million, underscoring rising operational costs and shifting consumer spending habits.
Downtown Las Vegas properties saw $1.6 billion in total revenue, a 3.3% increase from the prior year. Gaming revenue rose 3.2% to $797.6 million, but net income fell 23.1% to $199.4 million, highlighting profitability struggles even amid increased visitation.
Key Regional Highlights
South Lake Tahoe: The region experienced a net loss of $30.4 million from $389 million in total revenue, $172.6 million of which came from gaming.
Outlying Clark County: The December 2023 opening of the Durango casino boosted the area’s performance, with total revenue up 8.1% to $3.1 billion and gaming revenue rising 6.7% to $2 billion.
Laughlin: Net income plummeted 84.7% to $8.3 million, reflecting the largest year-over-year decline in the state.
Major Operators Drive Statewide Revenue
Fifty-three casinos owned by 11 publicly traded companies accounted for 62.8% of Nevada’s total gaming revenue. This concentration highlights the significant influence of major operators on the state’s gaming economy. The report also provided data on various operational metrics, including average room occupancy rates, revenue per room per day, and gaming revenue per square foot of casino space.
Pool Season Hiring Surge
As Nevada’s gaming industry looks to meet seasonal demand, MGM Resorts International is holding a hiring event to fill hundreds of job openings for its upcoming pool season. The event will be held Thursday at the Career Center on Kelly Johnson Drive, offering candidates the opportunity for on-the-spot job offers. Applicants must be at least 16 years old, and pre-registration is available on MGM’s website.
MGM operates nine casino hotels and four non-gaming hotels on the Las Vegas Strip, making it one of the largest employers in the region’s hospitality sector. With pool season approaching, the company is looking to staff various positions to accommodate an expected influx of tourists.
Looking Ahead
Nevada’s gaming sector continues to evolve as operators expand their non-gaming offerings and adapt to market shifts. Despite challenges reflected in declining net income, the state’s increased revenue signals ongoing resilience. The success of upcoming projects, such as the Durango casino and ongoing renovations along the Strip, will likely play a key role in shaping future growth.
