🏡 Japanese Homebuilder Brings $1.4M Luxury Homes to Summerlin West

A new luxury home community is coming to Summerlin West, developed by Sekisui House, one of the largest homebuilders in the U.S. The project, Arcadia, will feature 40 upscale homes under the Shawood brand, with prices starting at $1.4 million.

First Las Vegas Project for Sekisui House

This marks Sekisui House’s first venture within Las Vegas, further expanding its footprint in the U.S. housing market. The company, which ranks as the fifth largest homebuilder in the country, began construction on Arcadia in July 2024. Home sales are set to begin March 1, 2025.

Home Designs and Features

Buyers can choose from three different home layouts, with prices ranging from $1.4 million to $1.6 million. The homes will range in size from 3,176 to 3,399 square feet, offering between three and four bedrooms.

A key selling point of these homes is their “zero energy” classification, meaning they are designed to produce as much energy as they consume, promoting sustainable living. The designs will also feature an optional "Kokage lounge," a concept inspired by Japanese culture, which translates to "under the shade of the big tree," providing a serene outdoor retreat.

Summerlin’s Continued Growth

The Arcadia development will be part of Summerlin, one of the most sought-after master-planned communities in the nation. A recent report by RCLCO, a national real estate consultancy, ranked Summerlin as the fifth best-selling master-planned community in the U.S. in 2024, with 1,055 home sales last year.

Celebrating its 35th anniversary, Summerlin offers an abundance of amenities, including:

  • More than 300 parks

  • Over 200 miles of interconnected trails

  • Multiple community centers

  • 10 golf courses

  • 26 public, private, and charter schools

With its blend of modern luxury, sustainability, and prime location, Sekisui House’s Arcadia project is expected to be a major addition to Summerlin’s upscale housing market.

🏒 Golden Knights' Defenseman Shea Theodore Out Week-to-Week After Tournament Injury

Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Shea Theodore has been ruled out for the remainder of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament due to an upper-body injury, as confirmed by Team Canada coach Jon Cooper on Wednesday. The injury occurred early in the second period of Canada's 4-3 overtime victory against Sweden at Montreal's Bell Centre. Theodore was checked into the boards by Sweden forward Adrian Kempe, leading to his early exit from the game.

Following the incident, the Golden Knights announced that Theodore is considered week-to-week with the injury.

This development is a significant setback for both Team Canada and the Golden Knights, as Theodore has been a key contributor on defense. In the current NHL season, the 29-year-old has accumulated 48 points, underscoring his offensive and defensive prowess.

In response to Theodore's absence, Travis Sanheim of the Philadelphia Flyers, who was initially a healthy scratch, has been called upon to fill the defensive void for Team Canada.

Coach Cooper acknowledged the challenge posed by Theodore's injury, noting that it places additional pressure on the remaining six defensemen, particularly Devon Toews and Cale Makar, who logged significant ice time following Theodore's departure.

The 4 Nations Face-Off, featuring teams from Canada, the United States, Sweden, and Finland, is being held from February 12 to 20, with games hosted at Montreal's Bell Centre and Boston's TD Garden. The tournament showcases top NHL talent and serves as a precursor to international competitions like the upcoming Winter Olympics.

As the tournament progresses, Team Canada will need to adjust their defensive strategies to compensate for Theodore's absence, while the Golden Knights will monitor his recovery closely, hoping for a swift return to bolster their lineup in the NHL season.

Robert F. Kennedy Jr. Confirmed as Health Secretary Amid Vaccine Skepticism Concerns

The U.S. Senate has confirmed Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as the Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS) under President Donald Trump, following a 52-48 vote. Kennedy, 71, is a well-known environmental lawyer and vaccine skeptic, whose nomination sparked significant debate due to his controversial views on vaccines and public health.

Throughout his career, Kennedy has been a vocal critic of vaccines, alleging links between vaccinations and various health issues—a stance widely discredited by the scientific community. He founded Children's Health Defense, a nonprofit organization that has challenged vaccine safety and efficacy. During his confirmation hearings, Kennedy attempted to alleviate concerns by pledging to base vaccine recommendations on data-driven, evidence-based, and medically sound research.

Despite these assurances, his nomination faced opposition from all Senate Democrats and some Republicans, including Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, a polio survivor who emphasized the life-saving importance of vaccines. McConnell stated, "I will not condone the re-litigation of proven cures, and neither will millions of Americans who credit their survival and quality of life to scientific miracles."

Kennedy's confirmation was secured after he provided key assurances to Republican Senators Susan Collins and Lisa Murkowski, promising to work collaboratively with Congress to ensure public access to information and to base vaccine ... sound scientific research. Senator Murkowski noted, "He has made numerous commitments to me ... ."

As the head of HHS, Kennedy will oversee a budget of approximately $1.7 trillion, managing agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). He has expressed intentions to address chronic diseases and obesity, citing concerns about America's changing food supply. Kennedy remarked during his hearings, "When my uncle was president, ... . Epidemics are not caused by ... ."

Critics remain apprehensive about Kennedy's appointment, fearing that his past advocacy against vaccines could undermine public health initiatives. His cousin, Caroline Kennedy, publicly opposed his nomination, calling him a "predator" and expressing concerns about his suitability for the role.

Kennedy's confirmation marks a significant shift in the leadership of the nation's health department, with potential implications for public health policies and programs affecting millions of Americans.

🎰 MGM Resorts Hits Record $17.2B Revenue, Despite Flat Las Vegas Earnings

Las Vegas-based MGM Resorts International posted its highest-ever annual net revenue in 2024, driven by strong international growth, even as earnings from its Las Vegas Strip properties remained stagnant.

Record-Breaking Revenue Fueled by MGM China

MGM Resorts generated $17.2 billion in total net revenue, a 7% increase from 2023, the company announced during its year-end earnings call on Wednesday. The standout performer was MGM China, which saw a 25% year-over-year (YoY) revenue increase, helping offset the flat performance of its Las Vegas operations.

Las Vegas Revenue Holds Steady

The company's nine casino resorts and four non-gaming hotels on the Las Vegas Strip brought in $8.8 billion in revenue, on par with 2023’s earnings. CEO Bill Hornbuckle acknowledged the difficult year-over-year comparisons but emphasized MGM’s strong positioning for future growth.

Strong Slot Performance Offsets Declining Casino Revenue

MGM CFO Jonathan Halkyard highlighted that December was particularly strong, with the fourth quarter setting a record for domestic slot machine wins. Slot revenue hit $648 million, marking an 8% YoY increase.

However, overall Las Vegas Strip casino revenue fell 15% YoY in Q4, totaling $501 million—down from $585 million in 2023. Table game drop (total amount wagered) declined 27%, from $1.7 billion in 2023 to $1.6 billion in 2024.

Formula One Grand Prix Impacts Revenue

MGM executives pointed to the Formula One Las Vegas Grand Prix as a key factor in the mixed fourth-quarter results. While the event boosted occupancy rates to 94% (up from 91% in 2023), overall casino and hotel revenue dipped due to less favorable gaming outcomes and lower room rates.

  • Hotel room revenue fell 6% YoY, from $875 million to $822 million

  • Average daily room rates dropped from $295 to $271

Despite these fluctuations, MGM Resorts remains optimistic about long-term growth opportunities in Las Vegas and beyond.
