💵 Rep. Steven Horsford Revives Bill to End Subminimum Wage and Tip Taxes

Nevada Rep. Steven Horsford has reintroduced legislation aimed at eliminating the subminimum wage and ending taxes on tipped income, aligning with a growing bipartisan effort that has gained support from Republicans and former President Donald Trump.
The Tipped Income Protection and Support (TIPS) Act, originally introduced in September 2024, seeks to eliminate the federal tipped subminimum wage of $2.13 per hour and establish safeguards to prevent individuals from exploiting tax loopholes by disguising large financial gifts as tips.
Bipartisan Support for Ending Taxes on Tips
Horsford’s bill is one of several proposals in Congress focused on removing taxes on tipped earnings. In January 2025, Sen. Jacky Rosen (D-NV) and Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) reintroduced the No Tax on Tips Act, which similarly aims to end taxation on tipped income while including measures to prevent misuse.
Horsford emphasized that he is working alongside One Fair Wage and other labor organizations to ensure that service industry workers receive fair compensation.
“This legislation puts workers first, ensuring that their jobs provide a living wage while allowing them to keep more of their hard-earned money,” Horsford stated.
Nevada’s Wage Standards and National Impact
Nevada is among the few states that do not allow a subminimum wage, serving as a model for fair wage policies. However, Horsford cautioned that future legislative or gubernatorial actions could change that, making federal protections necessary.
The bill, if passed, would benefit an estimated 6 million tipped workers nationwide, the majority of whom are women and people of color, many of whom currently earn as little as $2.13 an hour.
Path to Bipartisan Agreement
Horsford noted that Republicans have expressed interest in parts of his bill, and he plans to work with lawmakers from both sides of the aisle to push it forward.
“If Republicans and Democrats are serious about helping workers and making sure they can keep more of their money, then this is the bill that accomplishes that,” he said.
With growing bipartisan momentum, the TIPS Act could become a key policy shift in addressing income fairness for tipped workers across the country.

🏒 Team USA Dominates Finland with Explosive Third Period, Wins 6-1

The United States opened the 4 Nations Face-Off with a commanding 6-1 victory over Finland at Bell Centre on Thursday, pulling away with a dominant third-period performance. Brady and Matthew Tkachuk led the way, each scoring two goals, while Jake Guentzel and Matt Boldy added a goal and an assist apiece.
Goaltender Connor Hellebuyck made 20 saves, and Zach Werenski recorded three assists, helping the U.S. (1-0-0-0) claim an early lead in the tournament standings.
Game Breakdown
Finland struck first at 7:31 of the first period, with Henri Jokiharju finding the back of the net. However, the U.S. quickly responded, as Brady Tkachuk tied the game at 10:22, banking in a shot off Finnish goaltender Juuse Saros (26 saves).
With the score still tied midway through the second period, U.S. coach Mike Sullivan made a key adjustment, pairing Brady and Matthew Tkachuk alongside Jack Eichel, while shifting Kyle Connor to play with Boldy and J.T. Miller. The move paid off, as Boldy gave the U.S. a 2-1 lead at 17:04, deflecting a shot from teammate Brock Faber through Saros’ legs.
The U.S. then erupted in the third period, scoring three times in the first three minutes.
Matthew Tkachuk made it 3-1 just 15 seconds in with a power-play goal from the right face-off circle.
Jake Guentzel extended the lead to 4-1 just 11 seconds later, scoring off a pass from Auston Matthews. The two goals in 11 seconds tied an NHL international tournament record set by the U.S. against Finland in the 1991 Canada Cup.
Brady Tkachuk added his second goal at 3:00, finishing a pass from Eichel with a slick backhand move.
Matthew Tkachuk capped the scoring at 11:13, notching his second power-play goal of the night.
Tournament Standings & Upcoming Games
With the regulation win, Team USA leads the tournament with three points. Canada (0-1-0-0) earned two points from its 4-3 overtime win over Sweden (0-0-1-0) on Wednesday, while Sweden picked up one point for the OT loss. Finland (0-0-0-1) remains scoreless in the standings.
The tournament continues Saturday with a doubleheader at Bell Centre:
Finland vs. Sweden – 1 p.m. ET (ABC, ESPN+, SN, TVAS)
Canada vs. United States – 8 p.m. ET (ABC, ESPN+, SN, TVAS)
The U.S. will look to build on its momentum as it prepares to face its biggest rival, Canada, in what promises to be an exciting matchup.

President Donald Trump welcomed Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the White House with a warm embrace, reinforcing their diplomatic ties while addressing key trade and security concerns. Despite their friendly rapport, Trump made it clear that India would not be exempt from the higher tariffs his administration had begun imposing on U.S. trading partners worldwide.
The discussion on trade highlighted longstanding tensions, with Trump emphasizing the need to eliminate the U.S. trade deficit with India. His administration has previously criticized India’s high tariffs, referring to the country as a leading enforcer of import duties. While standing alongside Modi, Trump announced that the U.S. would adopt a reciprocal approach, imposing matching tariffs on Indian goods. The two leaders also discussed the possibility of increasing American energy exports to India and hinted at ongoing negotiations for a major trade agreement expected to be finalized later in the year.
Bilateral trade between the U.S. and India totaled approximately $190.1 billion in 2023, with India enjoying a $50 billion trade surplus. U.S. exports to India were valued at $70 billion, while imports from India reached $120 billion, according to India’s External Affairs Ministry.
Defense and Security Cooperation
In addition to trade, defense collaboration played a major role in the discussions. Trump announced plans to increase military sales to India, with deals valued at millions of dollars. This move paves the way for India to potentially acquire F-35 stealth fighter planes, a long-standing aspiration for the country’s defense forces.
Extradition was another key topic, with Trump pledging to send back one of the conspirators involved in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, referring to Tahawwur Hussain Rana, who was convicted in the U.S. in 2011 for plotting an attack on a Danish newspaper. The president suggested that additional extraditions could follow.
Tariff Policy and Economic Strategy
Hours before Modi's arrival, Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs equivalent to those levied by other nations on U.S. imports. This directive affected several American trading partners, including India. New Delhi had already signaled its willingness to purchase more U.S. oil and reduce tariffs on certain American goods, including lowering duties on Harley-Davidson motorcycles from 50% to 40% and removing retaliatory tariffs on almonds, apples, chickpeas, lentils, and walnuts in 2023.
Trump has positioned his administration’s trade policies as a way to eliminate U.S. trade deficits, an approach he reiterated during recent meetings with global leaders. Modi’s visit followed similar discussions Trump held with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, and Jordan’s King Abdullah II.
Immigration and U.S.-India Relations
Immigration was also a focal point of the meeting, as both leaders addressed the growing number of Indian migrants in the U.S. The Trump administration recently deported 104 Indian migrants on a military aircraft, marking the first such deportation flight to India under Trump’s immigration policies. India is among the top three countries with unauthorized immigrants in the U.S., with over 725,000 Indian nationals residing in the country without legal status, according to the Pew Research Center.
Recent years have seen a surge in Indian migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Canada border, with over 14,000 Indian nationals arrested in the last fiscal year, accounting for 60% of all arrests at that border. Trump reaffirmed his commitment to mass deportations of undocumented immigrants, while Modi confirmed India’s readiness to accept back any verified Indian nationals who are in the U.S. illegally.
Modi’s Additional Meetings
Before his meeting with Trump, Modi held discussions with National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and met with Elon Musk, who serves as both the founder of SpaceX and a top Trump administration official. Trump was questioned about Musk’s role in the meeting, particularly in relation to his business dealings, but dismissed concerns by emphasizing that India remains a challenging environment for foreign businesses due to its high tariff structure.
As the meeting concluded, Trump and Modi reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening U.S.-India relations, with discussions set to continue on trade, security, and defense cooperation in the coming months.
