โŽ Trump Signs Executive Order to End COVID-19 Vaccine Requirements in Schools

President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to end COVID-19 vaccine mandates in schools and colleges, potentially putting some institutions at risk of losing federal funding.

The order instructs the Education Department and Health and Human Services to identify discretionary federal grants or contracts given to schools that still require COVID-19 vaccinations and to eliminate funding where legally possible.

Limited Impact as Most Mandates Have Been Dropped

The directive is expected to have minimal nationwide effects, as most schools and universities have already removed COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Several states have also passed laws prohibiting such requirements.

Although the order does not specify which federal funds could be affected, most education funding is determined by Congress, limiting the immediate reach of the directive.

This move aligns with a campaign promise from Trump, who pledged to cut funding to schools enforcing vaccine requirements.

Current Vaccine Policies in Schools and Colleges

The order only applies to COVID-19 vaccines and does not affect long-standing school vaccination requirements for diseases such as measles, mumps, polio, and chickenpox.

Most U.S. states allow exemptions for students with medical conditions, and many also provide religious or personal exemptions for vaccines.

Although some colleges introduced COVID-19 vaccine requirements during the pandemic, most have since removed them. A few institutions, including Swarthmore and Oberlin colleges, still mandate vaccinations for on-campus residents, but they allow medical and religious exemptions.

State-Level Vaccine Mandates Were Rare

Few states ever enforced COVID-19 vaccine mandates for students. California planned to add the vaccine to its K-12 school requirements but later dropped the effort. Illinois briefly required college students to be vaccinated but lifted the rule after a year.

Democratic Response to the Order

The executive action drew criticism from Democratic lawmakers, including Sen. Patty Murray, a member of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. She argued that vaccine policies should be determined by schools and states, in consultation with public health officials, and called the order an attack on student safety.

The debate over vaccine mandates in schools remains a politically charged issue, with Trumpโ€™s order reinforcing his administrationโ€™s stance on personal choice over public health requirements.

๐ŸŽฐ Boyd Gaming Buys Eastside Cannery Land for $45M But Keeps Casino Closed

Boyd Gaming Corp. has purchased the land beneath Eastside Cannery for $45 million, but the long-shuttered hotel-casino remains closed. Property records confirm the sale was finalized last week, ending Boydโ€™s lease agreement for the land along Boulder Highway in eastern Las Vegas Valley.

Boyd originally acquired Eastside Cannery in 2016 as part of a $230 million deal for Cannery Casino Resortsโ€™ Las Vegas properties. However, the company had been leasing the land rather than owning it outright.

Why Is Eastside Cannery Still Closed?

Boyd previously stated that market conditions do not justify reopening the property, citing "excess capacity" at its nearby Samโ€™s Town hotel-casino.

According to Michelle Rasmusson, Boydโ€™s chief compliance officer, the company had been spending millions annually on rent at Eastside Cannery, and if reopening could cover those costs, it would have already done so.

"At this time, that is not the case, and we will need market conditions to change in order for us to re-evaluate," she wrote in an April 2024 letter to Clark County officials.

When asked about future plans following the land purchase, Boyd spokesman David Strow declined to provide further details, stating: โ€œWe do not have anything additional to share at this time.โ€

Impact of the Closure

Despite being closed since March 2020, Eastside Cannery has remained in active use.

  • Security & Maintenance: Boyd has been spending over $500,000 per month to maintain the property, including daily maintenance, IT system upkeep, and security patrols.

  • Police & Fire Training: The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has used the property for room clearing, active-shooter scenarios, and crime scene investigations, while the Clark County Fire Department has conducted stairwell training, room searches, and elevator rescue drills.

  • Pandemic Relief Efforts: Three Square Food Bank used the site as a weekly food distribution center during the pandemic.

Hiring Challenges and Economic Factors

Boyd indicated that reopening Eastside Cannery would require hiring several hundred employees, but the company has struggled with workforce shortages across its Southern Nevada locations. As of April 2024, Boyd had more than 400 unfilled positions in the region.

Whatโ€™s Next for Eastside Cannery?

With Boyd now owning the land, the company has more control over the property's future, but no reopening timeline has been announced. The decision will likely depend on market demand and economic conditions, as well as Boydโ€™s ability to address labor shortages.

For now, Eastside Cannery remains closed, with barricades still blocking the entranceโ€”a stark contrast to the bustling Samโ€™s Town, just a short distance away.
