Las Vegas Gas Prices

⛽ Las Vegas Sees Gas Price Hike Following Martinez Refinery Fire

Gasoline prices in Southern Nevada have experienced a notable increase over the past week, with the average cost for a gallon of unleaded gas in the Las Vegas Valley rising by 8 cents to $3.88 as of Tuesday, according to AAA data. This marks a 22-cent, or 6%, increase over the past month. Despite this upward trend, there was a slight decline of 1 cent between Monday and Tuesday, and current prices remain 11 cents lower than the $3.99 per gallon recorded at the same time in 2024.

Seasonal factors typically contribute to gradual increases in gas prices during this period, as demand grows and the transition from winter-blend to summer-blend gasoline occurs. However, recent events have exacerbated the situation. On February 1, a significant fire erupted at the Martinez Refining Company in California, leading to major supply disruptions, especially in Northern California. The incident resulted in the release of hazardous chemicals, including benzene, hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide, and xylene, posing health risks to nearby communities. The refinery halted operations, and multiple investigations are underway to determine the cause of the fire.

The aftermath of the Martinez refinery fire has had a ripple effect on gasoline supplies and prices in neighboring regions, including Nevada. Patrick De Haan, head petroleum analyst at GasBuddy, initially projected that Las Vegas could see price increases ranging from 15 to 40 cents per gallon due to refinery issues in California and the seasonal fuel blend transition. A week later, De Haan noted that the Las Vegas Valley appears to be tracking toward the lower end of that projection. He also mentioned that shipments of gasoline are en route to the state to help alleviate some of the supply pressure, and wholesale prices have begun to recede for now.

AAA spokesperson John Treanor highlighted that future price fluctuations will depend on the timeline for the Martinez Refinery's return to normal operations. The fire not only caused injuries but also led to the release of harmful chemicals into the air, prompting health advisories in the surrounding areas. Given the severity of the incident, it is likely that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) will conduct an investigation, and there is currently no known timeline for the refinery's full operational resumption.

Additionally, the refinery turnaround season in California is active and expected to continue for the next four to six weeks. This period involves pre-planned shutdowns of refineries for maintenance, upgrades, or repairs, typically occurring annually or biennially. De Haan cautioned that any minor issues during these turnarounds could quickly lead to higher prices in Las Vegas.

In summary, while gasoline prices in Southern Nevada have risen recently due to a combination of seasonal demand, refinery disruptions in California, and scheduled maintenance activities, efforts are underway to stabilize the supply chain. The situation remains fluid, and future price trends will largely depend on the resolution of refinery issues and the successful completion of maintenance activities.

🏒 Knights Resume Work, Await Return of 4 Nations Participants

The Vegas Golden Knights resumed practice Tuesday at City National Arena after a nine-day break. The session included 15 skaters, one NHL-caliber goalie, and a backup from the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights.

While the team was no longer thinking about tropical vacations, the workout was an opportunity to regain rhythm ahead of their return to game action. The Knights haven’t played since their 4-3 road win over the Boston Bruins on Feb. 8 and will face the Vancouver Canucks at 7 p.m. Saturday at T-Mobile Arena.

Not all players were present at practice, as several key members are still participating in the 4 Nations Face-Off. Center Jack Eichel and defenseman Noah Hanifin will try to help Team USA secure a championship victory over Team Canada on Thursday. Meanwhile, Canada’s roster includes coach Bruce Cassidy, captain Mark Stone, and goaltender Adin Hill. All five are expected to rejoin the Knights before Saturday’s game.

Defenseman Alex Pietrangelo, who withdrew from Team Canada’s roster due to an undisclosed issue, used the break to spend time with his family. While he didn’t closely follow the tournament, the U.S.-Canada rivalry has sparked plenty of conversation in the Knights’ locker room.

The Knights entered the break on a high note after their win in Boston but have struggled in recent weeks, posting a 5-8-3 record over their last 16 games. The team also faces the challenge of playing without defenseman Shea Theodore, who is week to week with an upper-body injury sustained during Canada’s game against Sweden on Feb. 12.

With Theodore out, the Knights will look to Kaedan Korczak and Ben Hutton to step up. Korczak has three assists in 18 games this season, while Hutton has appeared in five games without registering a point. Assistant coach John Stevens expressed confidence in their ability to contribute, emphasizing that the team has carried eight defensemen all season.

President Trump and Elon Musk Unveil Plan to Slash Federal Waste by $1 Trillion

In their first joint television interview, President Donald Trump and adviser Elon Musk sat down with Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity on Tuesday night. During the discussion, President Trump expressed confidence in Musk's leadership of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), stating that he anticipates the identification of $1 trillion in fraud, waste, abuse, and corruption within the federal government.

Elon Musk, appointed by President Trump to head DOGE, has been tasked with streamlining government operations and reducing unnecessary expenditures. Musk outlined a comprehensive plan aiming to cut at least $1 trillion from the federal budget by July 4, 2026. This initiative focuses on eliminating redundant agencies, downsizing the federal workforce, and abolishing outdated regulations.

In the interview, Musk emphasized the importance of fiscal responsibility, comparing national budgeting to personal finance: "A country is no different from an individual, in that if an individual overspends, an individual can go bankrupt, and so can a country." He highlighted that the current $2 trillion annual deficit necessitates immediate action to prevent further economic decline.

President Trump praised Musk's efforts, noting that DOGE has already uncovered significant instances of financial misconduct within federal agencies. He mentioned that Musk's team is actively identifying fraudulent contracts and wasteful spending, which will contribute to substantial budgetary savings.

However, the aggressive approach of DOGE has faced criticism. Some experts argue that the department's actions are driven more by political ideology than genuine cost-saving measures. Reports suggest that DOGE's focus has been on dismantling agencies traditionally viewed unfavorably by conservatives, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and USAID, with actual budgetary impacts being relatively minor.

Despite the controversy, both Trump and Musk remain committed to their mission of overhauling the federal government. They assert that by addressing systemic inefficiencies and rooting out corruption, they can achieve their ambitious goal of reducing the national deficit by $1 trillion.

✈ Frontier Airlines Introduces $19 Flights Between Las Vegas and Tucson Starting May 2025

Frontier Airlines has announced the launch of nonstop round-trip flights between Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas and Tucson International Airport, commencing on May 22, 2025. This new route will operate three times weekly—on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays—utilizing 186-passenger Airbus A320neo aircraft. To celebrate the inauguration, Frontier is offering a limited number of one-way fares starting at $19.

In 2024, Frontier was the sixth-busiest airline at Harry Reid International Airport, serving 4 million passengers. Currently, the airline operates 221 weekly flights to 28 destinations from Las Vegas, making it the carrier's third-busiest station.

The Las Vegas-Tucson route is not new to Frontier; the airline previously offered this service until March 2022. The reintroduction of this route will position Frontier in direct competition with Southwest Airlines, which currently operates 23 weekly flights between the two cities.

This expansion is part of Frontier's broader strategy to increase its network. The airline recently announced 14 additional routes set to launch in the spring of 2025, including services from cities like Austin, Cleveland, and Miami. These new routes aim to provide passengers with more travel options at affordable prices.

Travelers interested in the Las Vegas-Tucson flights can book tickets through Frontier's official website. Given the competitive pricing and limited availability of the introductory fares, early booking is advisable.
