⚾ Athletics Set for Las Vegas Move as $1.75B Stadium Plans Advance

Major League Baseball Commissioner Rob Manfred recently visited the Athletics' temporary home at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California, describing the 14,000-seat minor league stadium as "charming." He commended the efforts of the River Cats and Athletics' owners in providing players with an experience closely mirroring that of a major league setting. Despite the interim arrangement, Manfred reaffirmed that the Athletics are on track to inaugurate their new stadium in Las Vegas by 2028.

The Athletics, who had called the Oakland Coliseum home since 1968, departed after the previous season with plans to relocate to Las Vegas. The Las Vegas Stadium Authority has approved essential agreements, including lease and non-relocation documents, facilitating the construction of a $1.75 billion stadium on the Las Vegas Strip. Groundbreaking is anticipated in the spring, aiming for a 2028 opening.

Nevada and Clark County have committed $380 million in public funding toward the development of the domed stadium, which is projected to seat approximately 33,000 spectators. Interim Athletics team president Sandy Dean has indicated that owner John Fisher has increased his financial commitment to $1.1 billion. Additional financing is expected from U.S. Bank and Goldman Sachs, with Fisher also seeking potential investors from Las Vegas and beyond to acquire equity in the team.

In the interim, the Athletics will play their home games at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento for the next three seasons. This arrangement allows the team to maintain operations while their future Las Vegas stadium is under construction.

Commissioner Manfred also addressed the situation of the Tampa Bay Rays, who will temporarily play at George M. Steinbrenner Field in Tampa due to hurricane damage at Tropicana Field. He acknowledged the substantial financial investment required to upgrade Steinbrenner Field to major league standards, emphasizing the collaborative efforts within the league to support teams facing unforeseen challenges.

Regarding league-wide attendance, Manfred expressed optimism for the upcoming season, citing recent improvements in the game's on-field dynamics and a talented generation of players contributing to a more engaging and action-packed experience for fans.

Addressing concerns about financial disparities among teams, Manfred acknowledged the challenges posed by varying payrolls, exemplified by the significant spending of teams like the Los Angeles Dodgers compared to others. He emphasized the importance of competitive balance and the league's commitment to addressing these issues to maintain fairness and fan interest across all markets.

🏒 Brandon Saad Focused on Helping Knights’ Playoff Push

Brandon Saad may have benefited the most from the Golden Knights’ break during the 4 Nations Face-Off. The veteran left wing signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with Vegas on Jan. 31, quickly joining the team on a four-game road trip. With little time to adjust before hitting the ice, the extended break finally gave him a chance to settle in.

Tuesday’s practice marked his first at City National Arena. Now, with his wife, Alyssa, and their three children settled in Summerlin and a new home closing next week, Saad is feeling more at home in Las Vegas.

Saad was eager to join a Stanley Cup contender after being placed on waivers by the St. Louis Blues on Jan. 28. He left behind the remainder of a five-year, $22.5 million contract to sign with Vegas, prioritizing a chance to win his third championship after hoisting the Cup with Chicago in 2013 and 2015.

Strong Start with the Knights

Despite playing only four games with his new team, Saad has already made an impact. Skating alongside Brett Howden and captain Mark Stone, he has recorded a goal, an assist, and 10 shots on goal. His experience and smart play have been noted by teammates, including Ivan Barbashev, who played with Saad in St. Louis.

Vegas was struggling when Saad arrived, ranking just 20th in the NHL in points percentage since the start of January. However, the team entered the break on a high note with back-to-back wins against New Jersey and Boston.

Saad was drawn to the depth of the Knights' roster, believing it could be a key factor in their success. He has been impressed by the team’s ability to play a full 60 minutes and battle through adversity, even in losses.

Preparing for the Home Stretch

With the team back at practice, Saad is using this time to learn the system and get fully up to speed before the Knights return to action Saturday against the Vancouver Canucks at T-Mobile Arena. Several key players, including Stone, Jack Eichel, Noah Hanifin, Adin Hill, and coach Bruce Cassidy, are still away at the 4 Nations Face-Off, making these skates even more valuable for Saad’s transition.

His focus remains on contributing to the team’s push for another championship. With a fresh start in Las Vegas, Saad is eager to prove himself and help the Golden Knights contend for the Stanley Cup once again.

Mitch McConnell Announces Retirement, Will Not Seek Re-Election in 2026

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell has announced that he will not seek re-election when his current term ends, marking the conclusion of a decades-long career that reshaped conservative politics and cemented his legacy as one of the most influential lawmakers in U.S. history. The 83-year-old senator from Kentucky, who has served as the longest-tenured Senate party leader, revealed his decision on his birthday in a speech on the Senate floor.

McConnell’s announcement signals the final chapter of a career that saw him steer the Republican Party through landmark legislative battles, Supreme Court nominations, and the rise of a more populist movement led by former President Donald Trump. Despite their past partnership, McConnell’s influence within the party has waned as Trump’s dominance has grown.

A Career Defined by Strategy and Influence

Since being elected to the Senate in 1984, McConnell has been a master tactician, playing a key role in shaping the federal judiciary, passing tax cuts, and navigating the Senate through two impeachment trials. His leadership helped secure a conservative majority on the Supreme Court, blocking Democratic President Barack Obama’s nomination of Merrick Garland in 2016 while fast-tracking Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation just weeks before the 2020 election.

McConnell’s tenure also included fierce battles over healthcare, foreign policy, and economic legislation. He was a staunch defender of tax cuts for businesses and high earners, a driving force behind deregulation efforts, and an advocate for a strong U.S. military presence abroad. Despite his long-standing conservative values, he found himself increasingly at odds with Trump’s populist brand of politics, particularly on issues like isolationism and election integrity.

His relationship with Trump fractured after the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. While McConnell voted to acquit Trump in his second impeachment trial, he condemned the former president as being "morally responsible" for the riot. Their divide deepened over time, with McConnell opposing Trump-backed candidates in key Senate races and refusing to align with the former president’s election fraud claims.

Health Concerns and the Political Landscape in Kentucky

McConnell’s decision not to run again comes after a series of health scares, including multiple falls and instances where he appeared to freeze while speaking in public. Despite these challenges, he has remained active in legislative affairs and has vowed to finish his term, which runs through January 2027.

His departure sets up a competitive race for his Kentucky Senate seat. The Republican primary is expected to be highly contested, as the state has leaned increasingly conservative in recent years. Meanwhile, Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, a Democrat who has won statewide office in a Republican stronghold, has indicated that he does not intend to run for the seat but is widely viewed as a rising figure in his party.

McConnell’s Final Priorities

Despite announcing his retirement, McConnell made it clear that he still has work to do in his remaining time in office. He remains committed to strengthening national defense, particularly by supporting aid to Ukraine, an issue that has put him at odds with Trump’s more isolationist stance.

Reflecting on his career, McConnell acknowledged the shifting landscape of the Republican Party but reaffirmed his belief in the Senate’s ability to tackle important issues. He expressed appreciation for his colleagues and staff while signaling that he intends to stay engaged in legislative battles until his final days in office.

As his time in the Senate nears its end, McConnell leaves behind a legacy of political maneuvering, institutional loyalty, and an unwavering commitment to conservative governance. His departure marks the end of an era in Republican politics and raises questions about the party’s direction in the years ahead.
