🏀 UNLV Basketball to Host Six Nonconference Games at Thomas & Mack Center
UNLV’s men’s basketball team has released its nonconference schedule for the upcoming season, featuring 11 games between November 4 and December 21. This year’s schedule includes four games against teams that made it to the postseason last year. The schedule is slightly shorter than last season's, likely due to the Mountain West schedule increasing from 18 to 20 games.
Home and Tournament Games
The Rebels will host six of their nonconference games at the Thomas & Mack Center, beginning with a matchup against Alabama State on November 4. They will also participate in the Arizona Tip-Off tournament at Mullett Arena in Tempe, Arizona, on November 28-29, and play Pacific at Lee’s Family Forum on December 14.
“We have put together an extremely challenging non-conference schedule that we believe will match the competitiveness of this year’s team,” coach Kevin Kruger said. “It will give us the opportunity for some big wins and prepare us extremely well for an always-tough Mountain West season.”
Team Outlook
UNLV finished with a 21-13 record last season under coach Kruger, marking their first postseason appearance since 2013 and advancing to the quarterfinals of the NIT. Returning sophomore guard Dedan Thomas Jr., who earned co-Mountain West Freshman of the Year honors, is expected to be a key player this season.
Schedule Reveal and Highlights
The team revealed the schedule with a humorous social media campaign, presenting coach Kruger and players with objects in cardboard boxes representing their opponents. One notable moment featured a live cat symbolizing Pacific’s tiger mascot, which startled junior guard Jaden Henley.
Full Nonconference Schedule
Nov. 4 vs. Alabama State, Thomas & Mack Center
Nov. 9 vs. Memphis, Thomas & Mack Center
Nov. 14 vs. Omaha, Thomas & Mack Center
Nov. 20 vs. Pepperdine, Thomas & Mack Center
Nov. 23 vs. New Mexico State, Thomas & Mack Center
Nov. 28 vs. Mississippi State, Tempe, Ariz. (Arizona Tip-Off)
Nov. 29 vs. Butler or Northwestern, Tempe, Ariz. (Arizona Tip-Off)
Dec. 7 at Creighton, Omaha, Neb.
Dec. 14 vs. Pacific, Lee’s Family Forum
Dec. 17 at Dayton, Dayton, Ohio
Dec. 21 vs. UC Riverside, Thomas & Mack Center
Conclusion
The upcoming season promises to be an exciting one for the Rebels as they take on a challenging nonconference schedule designed to prepare them for a competitive Mountain West season.
🏡 Las Vegas Arts District Faces Gentrification Amid New Developments
Longtime resident Brian "Paco" Alvarez has witnessed a significant transformation in Las Vegas' Arts District. What was once an industrial zone has become a vibrant hub of art galleries, cafes, bars, and restaurants. The neighborhood’s evolution is evident as luxury apartment projects and upscale developments emerge, changing its profile from a small business-centric area to a target for high-price real estate.
Rising Rents and Business Concerns
The influx of development has driven up costs significantly. The average asking rent for retail space in downtown Las Vegas, including the Arts District, has increased by nearly 70% over the past five years, reaching $2.13 per square foot in the second quarter of 2024, according to Colliers International. This surge in rent prices raises concerns among local businesses and residents about affordability and the future of the area.
Tara Pierce, co-owner of Main Street Moto, has operated near the Arts District for a decade and lived there for 14 years. She notes that the area has become challenging for businesses due to rising lease rates. "The Arts District is no longer really for the artists and the arts," Pierce said, highlighting the displacement of many businesses.
Samvel Sardaryan, owner of Pop’s Automotive, an auto body shop in the district since 2020, echoes this sentiment. He observed that several auto body shops have been forced to move out over the last four years due to gentrification and increased rent.
City Investments and Community Programs
Las Vegas City Councilwoman Olivia Diaz, who represents the area, emphasized the city's investments in the Arts District, including traffic pattern changes, enhanced landscaping, and new streetlights. These efforts aim to boost the artists' initiatives and create a local and tourist center in the city.
First Friday, a monthly event gathering artists and vendors, has been a fixture in the Arts District for over 20 years. Alvarez notes that this event has become a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s character, fostering a sense of community and mutual support among businesses.
The Future of the Arts District
The district's evolution continues with several mixed-use residential and retail projects underway. Upcoming developments include a 311-unit apartment project by CEDARst Companies, a 337-unit project by Southern Land Co., and a massive 3,000-unit project called Midtown by Z Life Co.
Councilwoman Diaz believes these developments represent the natural growth of any city, bringing more density and mixed-use spaces for residents' benefit. Despite rising rents, Sardaryan remains optimistic and plans to stay in the Arts District as long as possible, appreciating the increased foot traffic and potential shoppers these new apartments could bring.
“I would really love it to stay in the Arts District. It’s kind of becoming like a staple. People love dropping off their cars and walk around,” Sardaryan said. “I feel like they’re going to eventually get tired of us. But we’re going to be here until then, and we’ll still be here after.”
